What was the Age of Reason?

The Age of Reason was a movement in Europe that spread to America that advocated the use of reason and individualism instead of tradition and established doctrine.

Richard Steele (1672-1729)

Sir Richard Steele was an Irish writer and politician. He is remembered as the co-founder of the magazine The Spectator. Other pieces he wrote include: Isaac Bickestaff, and Essays and Tales & Days with Sit Roger de Coverley.

John Locke (1632-1704)

John Locke is famous for writing The Social Contract. In this piece, he was arguing that all governments should have a contract between the rulers and those who are ruled.

Isaac Newton (1642-1726)

Sir Isaac Newton wrote The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended during the Age of Reason. Its physical location is at Cambridge University Library.

The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine

In Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason, he writes about an investigation of True and Fabulous Theology. He states that he believes in one God, and like all Newtonians, he professes the Deistic hope for happiness in another world.

The Declaration of Independence is a document that was written to state reasons the British colonies of North America sought independence in July of 1776.

Tatler by Richard Steele

The Tatler was a British literary and society journal begun by Richard Steele in 1709 and published for two years. It represented a new approach to journalism.

1615- Thomas Hobbes publishes Leviathan 1689- English Bill of Rights is created 1690-Locke publishes Two Treaties on Government. 1748-Montesquie published The Spirit of the Laws. 1751-Voltaire published The Age of Louis XIV. 1751-1765- Denis Diderot published The Encyclopedia. It was considered the

most important work of his lifetime. 1775- American Revolution begins. 1776- The Declaration of Independence was signed
