Hungerford Town Council’s new Tourist & Economy committee has listed its priorities.
The committee was formed on Wednesday, April 17 and is headed by Hungerford’s mayor, Cr Martin Crane and Cr Alanna Wilson.
Early listed priorities are: budget, signs, maps and tourist information, benchmark, French market, father Christmas and communications.
Concern was expressed for struggling Hungerford businesses meeting business rates said to have not fallen in line with rentals.
PRIORITIES LISTED FOR NEW TOURIST, ECONOMY GROUP
People from all walks of life with Australian and New Zealand connections packed St John’s Church at Sutton Veny on Sunday to remember the galant ANZACS and all
who died and those who were wounded and served their country and the British Empire in time of war.
The touching service was followed by wreath laying in the churchyard where 144 Australian and New Zealand servicemen and two nurses are buried in well tended and respected graves.
Within the day, the impressive service was being shown in Australia on ABC Channel 7 news.
Earlier in the day the West Country Branch of the Britain-Australia Society at its annual meeting in The infantry Officers’ Mess at Warminster Garrison re-elected its chairman Richard Pavitt for the 13th time.
Luncheon at the mess was attended by 60 people including Major General Christopher Elliott, president of London Legacy Lindsay Birrell, Britain-Australia Society national representative Sir Christopher Benson and Head of the Australian Defence Staff and Defence Adviser UK Brigadier William Sowry.
ANZAC REMEMBRANCE AT SUTTON VENY
The Year’s Highlights: Approx 40 members of the public attended the Parish Council meeting on Monday. Mayor Edwina Fogg presented Commendation Certificates to the
fund-raising committee for her chosen charity, Prospect Hospice, which will benefit from almost £8000. The Diamond Jubilee Celebrations committee also received certificates. The mayor outlined key events of her mayoral year, illustrated with slides; these included the Olympic Torch, Diamond Jubilee events, restoration of the Town Hall cells and a visit from the Duchess of Cornwall. A bouncy Stonehenge came to town and Marlborough Communities Market was launched. The Jubilee Orchard was planted on the Common, where, this Sunday at 2.30, the mayor will plant a mulberry tree, which was awarded to the town by the Tree Council. Still to come: the new Town Council website on 1 May and refurbishment and opening of the loos under the town hall.
Committee Chairs gave their annual reports. Cr Ross, Finance and Policy, expected a very small surplus, which would be added to the Council’s reserves of £300,000. The committee granted £6800 to local enterprises and charities this year. Cr Loosmore, Property, listed the remedial works undertaken on the town hall and thanked the caretaking team. A satellite dish has been installed to stream live performances and glass doors are to be installed inside the front entrance, to reduce heating loss. Cr Francis spoke about Planning and Cr Pitts outlined the activities of Amenities and Open Spaces, some in association with ARK, such as the fish ladder at Town Mill and bird boxes in Cooper’s Meadow. He praised the work of the office and outdoor teams and listed projects still in the pipeline, including a footpath from Five Stiles Road to Salisbury Road business park and one along the edge of the Common to the cemetery.
Concerns raised by the public included safety of pedestrians in George Lane car park, lack of progress on tourist information, rugby club spectators churning up the Common with their cars and a need for more locations for planting fruit trees. The Town Clerk is dealing with the two latter items and the Council has produced 20,000 new tourist leaflets, for distribution this summer. The Town Clerk is also addressing the car park issue and Cr Peggy Dow asked me to mention the need for car owners to take much more care when reversing from spaces adjacent to the river. -Shirley Pryor

Hungerford lady councillors Wilson and Farrell have told Hungerford Town Council recreation, amenities and war memorials committee they would like
to see more emphasis on female facilities at Hungerford’s Triangle Field sports arena.
Cr Wilson has also said that she would like to see more involvement by the rugby club in the development of facilities.
The issue of the Triangle Field project will be debated on Tuesday at the council’s monthly meeting when there will be an update on tenders, drainage and proposed phased development.
The recommendation toward phased development comes from the extraordinary meeting of the full council on April 25 when total funding for the project was discussed at length.
Various methods of funding were discussed and it was stated that the rugby club had offered to provide up to £10,000 for the project which could cost up to £170,000.
Cr Holmes warned that there was need for restraint all round and that it was not a good time for heavy expenditure.
MORE EMPHASIS SOUGHT ON FEMALE FACILITIES
Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee is surveying the need for bus shelters in the town. Their first question is
whether the bus shelters a needed. This question will be put to bus users.
