Part 2
The Island of the Laestrygonians•His men with a dozen ships arrived at “the rocky stronghold of Lamos; Telepylus, the city of the Laestrgonians.
•Laestrygonsians – a people
of gigantic size and
cannibals too.
•The giants ate many of Odysseus’ men and destroyed eleve of his 12 ships by launching rocks from high cliffs. •Only Odysseus’ ship was not destroyed as it was hidden.
•Circe’s Island
After the island of the Laestrygonians, they arrived to Aeaea, the realm of Circe.
Circe – a most beautiful and most dangerous witch. Every man who approached her she turned into a beast, a swine.
•Odysseus sent some of his men to scout the lands on Aeae, but when they do not return, he become worried.
•Circe turned them into swine. She penned them in a sty and gave them acorns to eat. They eat them; they were swine yet men inside, aware of their vile state but they were under her power.
•When he knew what was happened to his men, e went to Circe to help them.•On his way Hermes met him. He told Odysseus about the herb (moly) which could save him from Circe’s deadly art.•He took the herb and went on his way.•He reached Circe. When Circe used on him her power, she failed.
•She turned his men back into men again. She treated them with all kindness and they stayed happily with her for a year.•Before they left her, she told them the way to reach home and that is to reach Teiresias (the holy man of Thebes.
•In order to reach Teiresias, they must cross the river ocean and beach the ship on Persephone’s shore (the entrance of the dark realm of Hades). Odysseus must go down and find the spirit of Teiresias.•There was only one way to induce his ghost to come to him, by killing sheep and filling a pit with their blood.
•The Underworld
•All ghosts were craving to drink blood, every one rushing to the pit and Odysseus must draw his sword and keep them away until Teiresias spoke to him.•He saw the ghost of Teiresias and asked him on how he can get home.•According to Teiresias; they might do some injury to the oxen of the Sun when they reached the island where they lived. And Odysseus himself would reach home and although he would find trouble waiting for him, in the end he would prevail. •After that, he saw his mother there Anticlea who has committed suicide in depression.
The Island of Sirens
•From Circe he had learned that they must pass the island of the Sirens.
Sirens – marvelous singers whose voices would make a man forget all else and would steal his life away.
But Odysseus told his men about them and the only way to pass them safely was for each man to stop his ears with wax.
•Scylla and Charybdis
•They passed the sirens but a sea peril next awaited them – a passage between Scylla and Charybdis.
Scylla – a six heads sea serpant, Odysseus has chosen to sail it while on Charybdis – a giant whirlpool, he did not chose to sail it because he knew that if he went to Charybdis, the whole ship would be destroyed. However, if he went towards Scylla, six men would die.•A sacrifice brae Odysseus made.
•Island of the Sun God•After leaving from the Scylla and Charybdis, they traveled to the island of the Sun God.
•His men acted with incredible folly. They were hungry and they killed the sacred oxen. Because of that the vengeance of the Sun was swift.•As soon as the men lift the island a thunderbolt shattered the ship. All were drowned except Odysseus.
•Calypso’s Island
Odysseus found the island of women, with a nymph named Calypso, with whom Odysseus has a seven-year affair with
•After the 7 years, Hermes convinced Calypso to let Odysseus build a new ship so he could sail home.
•Phaecians land
•After 7 years staying with Calypso, he reached the Phaecians Land.•The Phaecians accepted Odysseus and he explained his tenyear journey to them during a feast. They happily gave him a ride home on one of their magical ships.
•Ithaca•Finally, he made it back to his home. Athena disguised him as a beggar so he can remain hidden while he analyzed the loyalty of his friends and family.•He confronted his son Telemachus and reveals his identity to him. Penelope laid down a challenge to the suitors.•Any one of them who can string Odysseus’ bow and shoot it through the axe- handles like Odysseus used to do would be her choice.
PENELOPE
TELEMACHUS
•None of them could do it, until the beggar got a chance. He was ridiculed as he tried, but Odysseus shot the arrow perfectly. Athena then changed his appearance to his previous one.•The suitors were awestruck. It was then that Odysseus and Telemachus began their attack. With the help of Athena and Zeus, they slaughtered all the suitors. Odysseus, his father, Telemachus and other loyal servants meet them in battle. Laeters killed Antinous’ father with a lance. Zues soon commanded the fighting to stop. Odysseus finally reclaimed.•Odysseus took his place as king, once again, alongside his wife Penelope.
