Small and beautiful as it is, Gozo cannot be seen in just one day.

As a place to relax, ‘hang out’ and live the good life the island is unsurpassed. After you set foot on Gozo, you’ll know why you need more than just a day to savour it’s leisurely charms. The more you enjoy your visit to Gozo, the more likely you are to return, and to recommend the island to others.

If you are intrigued by this beautiful island’s ability to create ‘Gozo fanatics’ like ourselves, then plan a visit. We always stay for more than just a day. It’s the secret hideaway of all Maltese. Which is why we would prefer to leave it undiscovered by you. But it’s in our nature to share the best we have with visitors.

SSSSSh... Captivating Gozo!

The Saluting Battery,Valletta

Sited at Valletta’s best vantagepoint under the Upper BarraccaGardens and overlooking theGrand Harbour, the SalutingBattery is still equipped withoriginal cannon. In the past, itserved both to defend the har-bour and as an official ceremoni-al platform from where gun

salutes would be fired to honourvisiting dignitaries or vessels toMalta. For hundreds of years, italso doubled as the official publictime marker from where a gunwas fired at sunrise, noon andsunset to provide the public withthe exact hour of the day. Thefirst and last soundings indicatedthe time when all town gateswhere to be opened or closed. The noon-day round was meantfor mariners to calibrate theirtimepieces on board for naviga-tional reasons. After all these cen-turies, the old tradition of firing agun at noon (12pm) still takesplace here daily. Guided tours ofthe battery are offered beforeand after the display at 11am and12.30pm. Open: Daily 10am and1.30pm. Free transport from thissite to the Malta at War Museumand Fort Rinella leaves daily at12.15 and 1.15pm.

Fort Rinella, KalkaraFort Rinella is Malta’s only his-toric live-museum. It is a uniqueexample of late 19th centurymilitary engineering in beingbuilt as a steam-poweredmechanical war machine tohouse and power the world’slargest gun ever made – the

Armstrong 100-ton gun. This gun still survives in this fort. In itstime, it could fire a one-ton shell up to a distance of 8-miles atwhich range it could pierce 21inches of ship armour. This fort has been painstakingly restored by volunteers back toits original state. A historical re-enactment takes place here dailyat 2.30pm recreating aspects of the daily life of the Victorian gar-rison. This includes live cannon and musket firing. Voices - Tell Me WhyVOICES was originally set up in 1991 by the late Louis Naudi, together with Adrian Mamo, Tony Vella and Sue Weenink. Theyorganised a musical event that allowed young people to expresstheir musical talents in a positive way, to celebrate the beauty oflife and give joy to others with a spirit of altruism. Since then,Voiceshas continued to grow in popularity and success but has alwayskept this underlying ‘spirit of Voices’ very much alive. Everyoneinvolved, from the choir members, to the band, back stage, front ofhouse, as well as the committee, participate purely on a voluntarybasis. The concerts are held every two years with the aim of rais-ing funds which are then distributed to a number of charitableinstitutions. Tell Me Why is the title of this year’s edition – why thepoverty, why the violence, why the drugs, why the ignorance.Thisyear, the committee has decided that 50% of the funds collectedwill be dedicated to a major project, which aims to emphasise andreinforce the possibility of a positive approach to a more ‘healthy’lifestyle, using music and arts as a focal point.
