Welcome to another edition of our college magazine, The Achiever, highlighting a number of the incredibly exciting things happening here at Pendle Vale College.
We have now entered the last term of what has been another
incredibly hard working year for everyone connected with
Pendle Vale College. This latest copy of our very successful
Achiever magazine provides an opportunity for us to look
back, share and celebrate our many achievements.
I would like thank everybody at Pendle Vale College for their
incredible enthusiasm, effort and energy. I am extremely
fortunate to be leading a College which contains such
motivated, industrious and innovative young people and
adults.
I am particularly excited by the Mums2mums group that
we have set up in College. This has got off to a flying start
and we have a large group of interested parents who want
to know how they can play a much larger role in the life of
the College and in supporting their children. I can only see
this growing from strength to strength.
I can see large numbers of our students resplendent in their
new PE kit. I know parents have been very grateful for the
financial support that has been provided for this and I am
grateful for the agreement from the Governing Body to
release the funds to facilitate this. Our future plans include
providing students with their own hooded tops in view of the
fact that it is ‘grim up North’!
My best wishes and everything crossed for our current Year
11 as they approach their final examinations. The effort and
commitment put in by students and staff has been
breathtaking. Let us hope that the results achieved match
that effort put in.

Dear reader,
It is always an enjoyable yet difficult task to edit this magazine. We feel that The Achiever gives an excellent snapshot about life at Pendle Vale College, however, for every story we include there are many more which happen day in day out.
Once again there are a wide variety of articles included. We have particularly focused on the themes of Science, Sport and widening our students life experiences in addition to our continual focus of raising the attainment of all our learners.

This year I have been chair of Pendle Vale’s Student Council. We have been working hard to listen to the voices of fellow students and trying to make Pendle Vale College an even better place to learn.
STUDENT COUNCIL
It has been a very busy year and we will be finishing it off with a trip to the Houses of
Parliament in June. We will spend a day seeing what life is like for real members of parliament and also have a full tour of the building and the chance to take in
some of London’s famous sights.

Our focus has been to make use of space in and around College. To help us with this focus we visited
Manchester before Christmas including the National Football Museum and the Arndale
Centre to look for ideas on how these public places use their space. After lots of research
Student Council came up with a number of plans and ideas for using the space
in College.
One of the most important decisions we made is to have a Charity Donation box allowing students to give money to charity very easily and you can see this in college now. The Student Council will ask students from across the school which charity they wish to support each term. In addition we have worked on developing the signage around College and on making the entrance to school on Level 1 more welcoming. To achieve this we have worked alongside designers from Positive Solutions.

Year 8 took part in a cross-curricular challenge in their STEM lessons that involved budgeting for, designing, building and launching a rocket and a Mars lander. Prizes were awarded to the most successful teams. This was a major success – teachers from Science, Technology and Mathematics worked together to motivate and enthuse students so that they developed a better understanding of STEM skills and the careers that they could lead to.
To celebrate National Science and Engineering week
beginning March 17th, students and staff participated in
our first ever Pendle Vale College Science and Rocket week!
The week included students across the school getting involved in STEM activities. Curriculum
areas were set the challenge of including a ‘Space and Rocket’ related theme in their lessons, some
examples are:
History challenged students with the
idea that the Moon landings were a hoax. Food
technology tasted and evaluated astronaut food.
Students in French lessons described the planets of the solar system.
Students using the accelerated reader scheme were rewarded for choosing a space related
book to read.
Students in tutor groups were encouraged to consider STEM based careers, enter quizzes and design a Mars base. The week was a great success, congratulations to Mr Handy and everyone else involved.
As well as the main tourist sites such as The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Central Park we experienced the best of New York Shopping at Macy’s, Bloomingdales, FAO Schwartz and Times Square.
The Movie and TV theme tour took us to see the Friends apartment, which looked much smaller than on the show and various locations made famous by Spiderman, Superman and other big name films.
The aim of the visit was for our students to experience a cultural exchange and to be able to compare their lives here in Lancashire with those of their peers in New York. We connected with East Side
Community High in New York and initially met the students and staff at a concert that they invited us to. By the end of the session, the students were mixing well and were making plans for our visit to the school
the following day. After a series of workshops including yoga, beat rhyming and choir, the students sat down in small groups to discuss school and education and compare their lives. Friendships were made
and many of these have continued now we are back on home soil.We all returned to Pendle Vale exhausted but with a range of new
experiences. A great big thank you to all the students that took part in the visit for representing Pendle Vale in such a positive way.

Going to New York was an amazing experience. On the first day we went shopping in Macy’s for a couple of hours and then, in the evening, we went up the Empire State building, which had an amazing view. We walked through Times Square, which was very busy and full of shops, to get to Hard Rock café where we ate. The portions of food were huge so most of us had food left over no matter where we were eating.On the second day we went on the subway, which was funny because everyone started singing whilst on the train to get to the Statue of Liberty. We walked up over 50 sets of stairs to get to the viewing stand of the Statue of Liberty. We could see the New York skyline which was beautiful. We also went to Ground Zero which was a very moving experience and we saw the waterfalls in memory of all the people that died which were thought-provoking.
We went to watch a band performance by East Side Community High School students which was inspiring, the students were very talented and fun to hang out with as well. The next day we went back to the school and joined in with singing, yoga and beat & rhyme workshops. During the evening we went to see the show “Wicked” on Broadway and on the last day we went to the Rockefeller centre. New York was an amazing place and we really enjoyed it.

OUR ADVENTURE TO NEW YORK CITY TOOK PLACE LAST TERM AND ENABLED STUDENTS
TO BOTH SIGHT-SEE AND EXPERIENCE MUSICAL LIFE IN AN AMERICAN SCHOOL.
As part of our whole school drive to really raise aspirations and encourage future success, Mr Chaudhry managed to secure funding for a group of Year 10 high-achieving students to visit the European Union in Strasbourg, North-East France. Strasbourg’s location offers the perfect opportunity to visit Germany as well and students were keen to learn and use both French and German throughout the trip – whether they had previously studied the language or not, everyone had a go!
We went for a week staying in the beautiful city of Strasbourg. On the first day we visited the European Parliament, arriving by boat. We had a delicious three course meal in the parliament building and then went to meet our MEP sponsor, Mr Brian Simpson and he told us how he became a MEP and then gave us the opportunity to ask questions. After that we sat and listened to a live debate in the hemi-cycle auditorium. The following day we went to Freiburg in Germany. There, we visited the Black Forest and spent time around Lake Titisee, and saw the beauty of Germany.On our final day, the much anticipated part of the trip came, Disneyland Paris. We really enjoyed our time there, which can be seen by our huge smiles. Everyone was well-behaved and made a huge effort to join in fully with all the experiences and we really enjoyed this once in a life time experience.

We have recently returned from our annual Year 9 residential to
Winmarleigh Hall near Garstang. This trip is specifically designed to
motivate students, encourage personal challenges, promote teamwork
and develop study skills.
During the trip students took part in a number of fun activities,
including orienteering, zip wires, trapeze, survival skills and team
events. These activities provided a fantastic opportunity for our
students to broaden their horizons by trying something new and really
challenging themselves whether that be a scary tree climb or some
different cuisine from the canteen.
Students experienced a supportive environment that helped develop
their independence, organisation and social skills. They were given
challenges to solve during daytime and evening activities. It wasn’t all
work and no play though as they also got the opportunity to visit the
souvenir shop and on the last night students were treated to a PGL
disco.The trip was a really fun and rewarding experience for all involved and
the students who participated were a credit to the school showing
exemplary attitude and behaviour throughout!

The whole of Pendle Vale got involved in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) in World Book
Day Week. For the last 15 minutes of the day all staff and students dropped what they were
doing and engaged in reading activities related to the subjects they were in and there were some incredibly interesting
reading choices!

Our next DEAR week will be in June and will be all things Tarzan to coincide with the new Tarzan animation… watch this space.
In our quest to develop a love of reading, we have had
another exciting term of reading activities. Alongside World Book Day events, Y7 -9 created their
own top 50 reads for Pendle Vale. Any book read off the recommended list results in
reduced targets for Accelerated Reader. Students nominated books that make them laugh,
cry, frighten them and inspire them.

The Lancashire Book Of The Year Award is now in its 28th year. The whole process of the award lays in the hands of the county’s young people. From the onset the students from schools across the county have the only say in which books make it on to the short list. Books are submitted by publishing companies which must meet the strict criteria. They must have been published in the year of the award and suitable for 11-14 year olds.
The award is highly sought after by both authors and schools wanting to be part of the judging. Only 12 schools from across Lancashire are chosen to take part each year.
PVC was very lucky this year and was selected to represent the Pendle area. Ms Salazar’s year 9 class took on the task of reading the 70+ books submitted this year. In November four representatives from the class met up with their partnered school to discuss the books read so far. In February all schools met again and submitted their choice of top ten. In March Eve Abrahams and Aminah Daar travelled to County Hall in Preston to find out which books had made the top ten. They then brought the books back and had to read all the top ten books again so that in May they can be part of the judging process to determine the winning book. Eve and Aminah are accomplished readers and already have their clear favourites for the final judging day. The discussions that take place are very entertaining with all young people fighting for their book choice to be the winner.Previous winners have included Chris Higgins, Keren David, Sophie McKenzie, David Massey, Anthony Horowitz and Robert Muchamore to name but a few.
Making a positive difference
to Southfield
A highlight of the year has been the community action workers of Pendle Vale who are making a positive difference
to the Southfield Ward of Nelson. Each week Year 10 students, come rain or shine, under the direction of Mr Rehman
descend on the local area to litter pick and generally tidy up. In their branded weatherproof and safety clothing, the students are proving a big hit with local residents, landlords and Pendle
Borough Council. Over the course of this year many bags of rubbish have been removed and many compliments have
been collected. A big well done to everyone who has been involved
with the project since September.
This year on a Tuesday afternoon year 10 have been engaged in
activities designed to unlock their potential beyond the traditional
curriculum. Students have enjoyed a variety of experiences from
cycling and dance to touch-typing, sign language and photography.
All students have also developed their learning skills, first aid
awareness and had the opportunity to engage in a work experience
placement.
Another great success has been the
progress made by our budding horticulturalists working in the
Pendle Vale Garden. The students, supervised by Mr Robinson from University of Bolton Mr Carey from Myerscough College, Mr Crompton and Mrs Shields have transformed a barren piece of land into a superb allotment
complete with a polytunnel, raised beds and shed storage. Braving the elements students have created their own working allotment area which is starting to
produce the first batches of Pendle Vale produce, destined for the school and local care home
kitchens. The group has also formed a partnership with Pendle Borough Council and Nelson in Bloom,
this will see many hanging baskets created at Pendle Vale brightening up our local environment.

Who – Yr9 and Yr10 Design and TechnologyWhat – Rotary Club Technology TournamentWhere – Nelson and Colne CollegeWhen – Spring 2014Theme – Radioactive Meteorites Students from schools and colleges in Pendle, Burnley and Rossendale took part in the annual BAE Systems Technical Tournament supported by local Rotary clubs. The challenge involved teams of four students representing their schools to tackle a design and build task in four hours. This year’s task was to pick and place a radioactive meteorite on to a target and attracted a total of 38 teams from 10 schools and college. We entered a Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 team.Pendle Vale has a reputation to uphold as for the past few years either a student or a staff team has won the competition and this year was no exception with our Key Stage 3 team (Sophie Holgate, Jack Hartley, Seph Shah and Tayyibah Abbas) winning the intermediate tournamentThe students were a credit to the school working extremely hard to produce what were described as fantastic portfolios and innovative products to overcome the challenge and we had a fantastic day.

When: Spring 2014Theme: Positive Affirmations
The Graphic Products students visited a real life screen printing studio in Manchester City Centre. They spent time in their lessons using Adobe Illustrator to create designs based on the theme’ Positive Affirmations’, which had to include inspirational quotes or sayings
from famous or historical people; celebrities, sportspeople, politicians - somebody they consider
to be iconic and a positive role model.
Students were shown how to prepare their designs and expose them onto silk screens, which had been prepared with photosensitive emulsion. Once their screens had been set up they were ready to print.
They had to think about the colour of the ink and the colour of their card to bring their designs to life, they printed onto all different types of card and plastic and
mixed ink colours to create really interesting and exciting designs with the wow factor!
We all had a great day and the results are brilliant. Have a read and see if they inspire you!

The Catering students visited a small local teashop to learn all about Afternoon Tea – Its history and origins, typical components included and some background about tea drinking. The owner, Louise, showed students how to set their tables, and then all were served a sampler menu of sandwiches, crisps, cakes and pastries with cups of tea. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions which they had prepared earlier.We were made to feel extremely welcome; Louise closed especially for us, although one lady who was a regular customer insisted on joining us for a cup of tea. She commended our students on their impeccable behaviour and mature attitude.
We thoroughly enjoyed our taster session and gained a real insight into suitable foods, presentation skills, profitability and costing. This will be a great help when planning the Year 10 practical assignment, based on Afternoon Tea.
Year 9 set 1 have entered a maths challenge competition at Edge Hill university. 6 groups started initially. I then chose four groups to send of as official entries. Of these 4 groups 3 have been selected to progress to the next round. Students had to solve a maths problem presenting their solution as a poster and as an audio or video file.
Every evening after school study groups for English and Maths have been running for Year 11 students with our team of Learning Mentors. The reaction to the extra study has been hugely positive. Many students have commented that although the extra effort has been challenging the sessions have been worth it and their chances for top grades have really improved. If you need some extra help with your studies or a fresh perspective on a subject then drop into room 410 and speak to one of our Learning Mentors.
Year 11 students at Pendle Vale have been working hard to make sure that 2014 is one to remember.
In addition to working with our learning mentors many of our students have benefited from using our new online Tute system, where they have been coached in English, Maths and Science online by a specialist teacher. We have been very pleased with the initial impact which Tute has had and we will be extending this into next year for more learners.

Easter break by attending a series
of revision workshops at Pendle
Vale College. Geography revision
sessions were focused on physical
geography and students completed a
‘speed dating session’. Students took
turns in speaking to their ‘date’ for 5
minutes about a section of the exam
paper, e.g. Yellowstone Supervolcano
or Hard and Soft Engineering along
the coast. At the end of the 10
minute ‘date’ everyone moved on
and started again with a new ‘date’.
After speed dating a quiz was held in
groups based on what the students
had learned past exam papers were
looked at.
104 History students attended
a full day GCSE revision course
led by exam specialist Malcolm
Chandler. These sessions were
aimed at developing the skills and
knowledge needed to effectively
tackle the two GCSE History
papers this summer. Students also
left with a comprehensive revision
pack, which they will be able to
make use of in their own revision
time. This was the second session
of the year and we look forward to
utilising Malcolm’s expertise again
next year when the current Year 10
are preparing for their final GCSE
exams in the summer of 2015.

On Yer Bike!!!!As part of our commitment to developing a healthy lifestyle a group of students have recently completed a six week cycling course with British Cycling Coach Dylan Clayton. All have achieved the Bikeability Level 3 Qualification meaning that they are able to cycle safely on public roads.The students are part of the Pendle Valo cycling club that is to be based at the recently developed Steven Burke Sports Hub at Swindon Playing Fields in Nelson and we are proud to be playing a part in developing the Olympic cycling legacy here in Pendle. Those who have taken part now have the cycling skills required to race against the best in the Pendle Area and we look forward to seeing them as champions in the future.
Spencer Fearon, the youngest ever boxing promoter in the UK, of Hard Knocks Promotions, as well as being a presenter on the Sky Sports
Programme Toe 2 Toe, delivered a motivational talk to a group of students at Pendle Vale College Nelson. The purpose of the talk was to provide students
with an insight of Spencer’s background and how he overcame a tough upbringing. He mentioned the importance of gaining a good education,
having ambition, how to focus and succeed in reaching your goal. Valuable guidance on choosing good peer groups to ensure the best start in life was
also given to the students who found the experience a very valuable one.

PENDLE VALE’S GOT‘I have been playing football since I was 4 years old. My training started at an indoor football pitch next to Turf Moor and I spent 5 years at this center improving my technical ability before moving onto Barrowford Celtic, a Sunday league team where I played in their Under 9’s and Under 12’s team before moving on to a higher ranked team called Mill Hill.
I had a fantastic 1 ½ years at Mill Hill Blue, before being ‘scouted’ by Bury FC, my trial with them went on for 6 weeks, it was an amazing experience.
I love the way football is played at Academy Level, very fast and fluent in passing. I play at center midfield; receiving the ball a lot, trying to split defenders with my passing or even taking a few shots on goal! Whilst playing against Preston North End I was informed of the fantastic news that I was being ‘signed’ by Bury FC. I had a huge smile on my face throughout the whole game and scored 2 goals in our 3 – 0 win!
I am now looking forward to the challenges that lie before me and I know that the hard work starts now!’

Once again our Raising Achievement Days
have been a great success in broadening the
experience of learning for our students beyond
the classroom and finding new ways to challenge
our learners in ways that prove difficult within
a traditional curriculum structure. On Raising
Achievement days our learners work on extended
projects for a whole day focusing on one issue
rather than a series of lessons.
My experience at the zoo
“I found out that zoos are an advantage because they protect the animals but there is also a disadvantage as the animals do not have freedom. To prove this even
further, I asked one of the keepers whether they agreed to this dilemma. She said “I agree that the animals are kept well cared for and are treated well, but I also have discovered, that some animals prefer more space”. I
agree with this and would not want animals to be kept in captivity.
I enjoyed the talk with the Zoo Keeper because it helped me to understand why animals are endangered. I learned that animal fur was used for accessories and
clothes. This was really surprising because I never thought people would do something so terrible and this
is something I would want to be stopped.

As part of our Raising Achievement Day, Year 7 went to Blackpool Zoo focusing on developing their literacy through Science. A competition was held to see who
could describe their experience the best. Here are extracts from our two winners.
“My opinion about animals living in the zoo is that they should be there, because animals get well looked after and get attention and food, they get all the equipment and supplies they need so I think they are happy. On the other hand if the animals did not live in the zoo they would be living in the wild where they could be
killed and become extinct, they wouldn’t have anyone to care about them and it would be hard for them to find their food, whereas in the zoo they are provided
with food when they need it. My favourite animal in the zoo was the lion because
the lion was in a cage sitting down nicely resting among the green grass. I like the lion because it is
strong and fierce.The best thing at the zoo was the lesson learning
about different animals and how they live, because that taught me a lot of new information that I did not
know before such as some of the animals in danger of becoming extinct like the tigers and the elephants”

A group of Year 10 students were selected to work on developing their
understanding of set texts in English working with Mrs Salazar and Mrs
Thornley. The focus was to consolidate and develop student knowledge
of the exam set texts using study and revision skills which would help
them to remember facts about plot and character.
The students had to pick out the six most important events in
chronological order from their text. To help them remember the events,
we then asked the students to create dramatic tabloid style headlines
for each event, which they wrote on sugar paper and then presented
back to the rest of the group, who had to guess which event each
headline depicted. The students came up with some really memorable
headlines using features such as rhyme and alliteration.
A further technique used was in creating mnemonics for key features of
each character and these were also presented back to the class. Some
were very memorable!
Further highlights of Raising Achievement day for our students included visiting Liverpool for Travel and
Tourism fieldwork, creative catering with technology, making Maths based games, developing language
understanding including Mandarin and creating stories with author David Gatward. Learning isn’t always best
in a 5 period day – our Raising Achievement Days certainly prove this.
A second group of students visited the
‘Theatre of Dreams’
Old Trafford home of Manchester United and had an excellent day
experiencing life inside a top Premier league football club. Students
also enjoyed a carousel of sporting activities in school including
Cycling, Football, Vaulting (gymnastics) and finally Trampolining.
Students from year 9 visited the Full Contact Performance Centre in Rochdale for a mixed martial arts event. Qualified coaches each took a martial arts session within
their own discipline. The trip helped to foster self-discipline, improve teamwork skills, taught students to set and achieve goals and instilled a sense of respect and
encouraged non-violent conflict resolution. The students had a fantastic day and demonstrated impeccable behaviour throughout.

Well done to our Under 16 boys for becoming Pendle Hockey Champions. After training hard two teams were eventually selected to enter the Pendle Schools Hockey Tournament, which saw Pendle Vale crowned as Champions.The U16 boys Pendle Hockey Champions are: Charlie Lord, Arbaz Yunis, Darab Khan, Junaid Gullnawaz, Husnain Ali, Scott Wilkinson, Jack Heyes, Cole Elliot, Ahsan Ali.

Pendle vale girls took part and competed well in the Pendle Hockey and Basketball tournaments, although the teams were not winners everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The year 8 netball
team also played in the Pendle Schools league, winning two matches, against Primet and West Craven and finishing
in a respectable third place.
Boxing courses for year 7 students have been very
popular and successful. We have also worked with
a dance specialist on Thursday after school working
with some of our more aesthetic and artistic girls in the
dance studio.
The fitness room has remained a popular facility to use
on a dinner time by a very dedicated group of boys.
Sports relief was supported by Pendle Vale students yet again this year, we did not see quite the same number of students in fancy dress but nevertheless many gave generously to help a very worthy cause. The staff also joined in the fun holding a fun dodge ball event, which the PE Faculty managed to win! Total amount raised over
£300!
In April of this year, a new PE Kit for Pendle Vale students was unveiled following consultation with students, parents, staff and governors. The new kit in royal blue and white
looks fresh and modern and represents a vibrant learning community.
WORLD WAR ONE COMMEMORATION
This summer the nation will
commemorate one hundred years since
the outbreak of the First World War.
If you have ideas about how we at Pendle Vale College can remember and pay respect to this
event please speak to your History teacher, Mr Welsh or Mr Hardwick.
In addition to this, all new Year 7 students who join the Team in September 2014 will receive a voucher for a new Trutex blazer and a PE kit, and will be provided with a college tie on their first day.
