By now you have probably heard others in our school community talking about the introduction of the online environment called Connect.

Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools. It will give our teachers a tool to deliver content to students via an online classroom. For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s classes and learning.

Schools can use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like upcoming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories can be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone via the Connect App. From Term 4 this year, our School Newsletter will be only be sent home online to parents via Connect.

The Connect Now App can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Last week, an information package was sent home with your child. Please read this information and return the information required to the school office. You will soon receive your login details via the email address we have on file for you. If you are unable to return your email information, please let us know by phoning 9496 9000 or emailing [email protected] so we can update our details.

Spread the word! Dragons have been seen flying over the Kelmscott and Camillo area! Some even landed

at Grovelands Primary school! Staff at Grovelands have been noticing strange occurrences around the school. Mrs Morrison saw a large wing shaped shadow over the Junior playground. Mrs Randall heard strange noises near Rooms 7 and 8. Mr Carroll noticed that key chemicals such as dragonsbane and sulphur, as well as his treasure chest full of gold ooshies , had gone missing. He also found what appeared to be a dragon’s scale and footprint! Mr Brown spotted some eggs that were left behind by a large brown and orange dragon that landed in the Junior Playground. He quickly let the Year 1 and 2 students know to come and look. To their great delight they found five sparkly dragon eggs. Tyson asked, “What will happen if they come back?” We then had a discussion about the best way to trap a dragon. The general consensus was we should use meat to lure them into some form of trap. Just in case the dragons do come back, the Year 1 and 2 classes are studying Talk for Writing unit about how to trap a dragon.

Welcome everyone, to the Term 3, Week 6 edition of the Grovelander. We have been very busy with swimming lessons. Given that this is a huge logistical undertaking there have been some minor hiccups along the way. Overall students and staff have worked well to meet these challenges.

I do need to remind all parents and caregivers that they need to be mindful of deadlines for returning forms and making payment so that they do not miss out on opportunities. To further improve our ability to communicate with our community, we have made the decision to utilise the Department of Education’s secure online environment: Connect. This will replace our Skoolbag App. An information package has already been sent home, and further details are provided on the front page of this newsletter. We are also investigating the establishment of our own Facebook Page. Our intent is that broadening our platforms for communication, will make it easier for parents, carers and community members to stay informed about the school, key events and important deadlines. I have had some enquiries about Book Week, an event we always embrace at Grovelands. This year, there was a clash between Book Week and our swimming lessons. Our version of Book Week will be held in Term 4. Our annual Book Fair will be held at the same time. More details will be provided later in the term. Finally, a reminder that our Open Night and 40th Celebration is on Wednesday September 25, 3.30pm to 6.00pm. Please remember this date, so you can come and join us. The program for the event is coming together. There will be food, drinks, displays, and entertainment. Classrooms will be open 3.30pm to 5.00 pm. The official 40th celebration will be held at 5.30 pm.

Kind Regards,

Mark Bradshaw, Principal

Please drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in our school's drop-off and pick-up areas. Never call out to them from across the road – they may run to you without checking for traffic. It's safest for children to get out of the car through the Safety Door, away from passing traffic.

Wakakirri On Thursday, 8 August, Grovelands participated in the Wakakirri story dance competition at the Perth Concert Hall. Our second year in the competition, we produced a polished performance with a clear story line. Selected Year 5 and 6 students started preparing in Term 1 for the performance evening. Given the theme, Sloth, students brainstormed ideas and decided to perform an item based around deforestation. Many rehearsals saw students working hard as a team to create an interesting and engaging story dance. On show day, students were on their best behaviour, getting performance ready and meeting students from other schools. The teachers involved also took the students on a street art hunt to pass time between the dress rehearsal and performance, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. What a vibrant city we have! When it came time to perform in front of a packed audience, the students gave 100% and executed their performance with enthusiasm. They were organised, professional and worthy of the accolades they received. The teachers were so incredibly proud of their efforts as were their families who were watching in the audience. Grovelands received two awards on the evening, the Teamwork award and Best Public Speaking award. All the students involved should be so proud of their efforts, they represented our school with pride and gained the experience of a lifetime. A big thank you to all of the staff and parents that made the evening a success. A special thank you to Mr

Back at Total Eden for supplying the materials for our backdrops and Coles for supplying the students with

reusable bags on the evening. Mrs Trenorden.

From The Sustainable Team… On Tuesday, 6 August, Mrs Taciak organised a visit from Mrs Robyn Brown from Wastewise. Mrs Brown conducted a waste audit of our school with Mrs Shorey’s Year 5/6 class. We collected all the rubbish bins from around the school and set them out on a tarp with different green tubs and began the job of sorting through all our school waste. We counted and weighed all the tubs and we recorded the data. It was really interesting to see the types of waste we generate each day at our school. We could also see what we could do to try to reduce and minimise the waste we generate each week. Out of ten green bins, we were able to reduce the rubbish down to just one small green tub that would go to landfill. The majority of our waste was plastic, juice boxes and organic waste. Our aim is to reduce our school lunch waste down to zero!

Tip 30 - The power of good father figures.

As part of The Fathering Project’s involvement with your school, I will be including helpful tips and ideas for all fathers and father figures. I hope these tips will help, inspire and encourage all fathers and father figures to be the best that they can be, as all fathers and father figures are critically important in every child’s life.

More involved fathers and father figures = better outcomes for children.

The Fathering Project is not a counselling service; we are seeking to inspire and equip fathers and father

figures to engage with their children.

If you would like more information about The Fathering Project, you can contact me: David Walker at
