Page 1: The 7 Sings of a Motivated Aplicant

The rst signs of motivation (or lack thereof) are apparent before you even reach the interview stage. When they rst reach out to you with their resume and cover letter, are they directly catered to you? If so, the applicant has done their research and taken the time to make their rst point of contact be unique. Taking the time to offer you tailored documentation indicates a high level of interest in the position and your company. Someone who is simply casting a wide net relies on a generic resume and cover letter to land a generic job with the rst company that bites.

1 Resume and cover letter

Those who take interviews seriously will arrive ahead of time, since they don't want to jeopardize their chances or inconvenience anyone. They allow time for traffic or difficulty nding your location. If they're running late, motivated job seekers call the company to let them know, explain the reason, and give an estimation of when they'll arrive. Candidates who are not invested show up exactly on time (hoping the interviews are backed up, thus giving them more time to prepare), or show up late without explanation or apology. The behavior you get for the interview is likely the behavior you’ll get on the job, so it’s wise to set high standards from the start.

2 Arrive ahead of time

The old adage is true: Dress for success. Candidates who are hungry for the job will wear the proper attire, have all their documents ready (resume, cover letter, portfolio, sample pieces - with extra copies in case there are multiple interviewers), and prepare questions beforehand. Candidates who take notes are indicating they are not only interested in your responses, but want to be sure to remember them.

3 Dress for success

Within the rst ve seconds of meeting an interviewee, you have the opportunity to get a social read on them through their introduction and handshake. First impressions are very important, especially for interactions that are short. The way they greet you is the way they'll greet colleagues and clients. Motivated candidates will make sure they appear condent, make eye contact, and smile.

4 Introduction and handshake

Motivation isn't the same as eagerness. Good interviewees are calm and condent, while at the same time curious and passionate. Eager beavers will agree with everything you say, agree to any task you propose. They keep conversations supercial and don’t ask probing questions. Motivated candidates will be open-minded, but will engage in real discussions, offering ideas and suggesting solutions. They want to show you they can be a true asset to your team.
