Habit 1Be Proactive

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Being proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on someone else – like your parents or the weather.

Proactive people know that you choose your behaviour.

Habit 2Begin with the end in

mind

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Beginning with the end in mind is about visualising your goal. It is about finding out who you are and what makes you YOU. Begin each day or opportunity with a clear direction and do what you can to be a good person as you work to get there.

Habit 3Put First Things First

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Habit 3 is about working out what is important in life, saying ‘no’ to some things so that you can be organised and prioritise the things that are worth the most to you in your life. Make plans to stop doing the less important things that waste your time.

Habit 4Think Win Win

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Habit 4 - think win-win is about always looking for ways to cooperate with others so that everyone benefits. This means changing a common view that someone always has to win. You have to balance courage in what you believe in with consideration for others.

The Balancing ActCovey says that to do this you need three character traits:

Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments

Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others

Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone.

Habit 5Seek first to understand, then to be understood

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Habit 5 is about trying to understand someone else’s point of view before sharing your own. When you do, a whole new world will open up to you. Take the time to listen without judging or giving advice.

Listen with EmpathyHere are some tips for more empathic listening

Give your undivided attention.

Don’t judge, but in or compare with your own experiences.

Observe the emotions – is the person angry, afraid or hurt.

Give space for the speaker to respond to their own questions and thoughts.

Ask questions that clarify, or re-phrase what you’ve heard to show that you understand.

Synergy is the habit of creative cooperation. It means

teamwork and cooperation based on valuing

difference, being open to other influences and gaining

new ideas and insight.

Habit 7Sharpen the Saw

Based on the work of Stephen Covey and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Habit 7 - sharpen the Saw means taking care of yourself and having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Every day is a new opportunity to recharge yourself, reflect on what you have learned and re-focus on what adds value to your life. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill.
