PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

Dear Colleague,

We are excited to announce the return of Spine Summit 2016, held in collaboration with 11 other spine societies. Join us March 16–19, 2016, in Orlando, Florida, for the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. Renew old friendships and catch up on the latest surgical and non-surgical approaches to spine and peripheral nerve disorders as we explore our theme, Global Challenges, Universal Solutions.

We welcome our international partner, the Neurological Society of India, and our honored guests, Christopher Shaffrey and Lawrence Lenke. Spine Summit 2016 is packed with all the great science you’ve come to expect, with daily scientific sessions, special courses with our partner spine societies, and debates on hot-button topics currently affecting our specialty.

We’re pleased to once again host a hands-on cadaver course with the masters, the David Cahill Memorial Controversies Sessions, and the Young Neurosurgeons Dinner with special guest speaker Phil Weinstein. Three luncheon symposia and an opening night reception enhance your meeting experience. And you will want to visit our exciting exhibit hall to see the newest technologies and products.

In addition to oral presentations showcasing the best original science in the field today, we’re introducing a new spine section tradition: the Charlie Kuntz Scholar Awards, given to residents or fellows who have submitted outstanding abstracts in the area of spinal disorders, and the Journalistic and Academic Neurosurgical Excellence (J.A.N.E.) award, given to an outstanding manuscript authored by a senior resident or neurosurgical fellow in a CAST accredited training program.

The stunning Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers a tropical South Seas theme with a lagoon-style pool and activities your whole family can enjoy. Right next door are the spectacular Universal Orlando® theme parks, and be sure to visit the Universal CityWalk® entertainment complex adjacent to the parks.

We invite you to join us at Spine Summit 2016 to connect with your colleagues and take part in an exceptional educational program, all while enjoying everything that Orlando has to offer! Make your arrangements and register today at cns.org/spine.

Includes Lunch Moderators: Paul A. Anderson, Justin S. SmithSpeakers: Christopher P. Ames, Kyle Jeray, Tyler R. KoskiDescription: This symposium introduces Own the Bone® to the spine community to encourage spine practitioners caring for patients with osteoporosis to take owner-ship. The symposium emphasizes the use of diagnostic tests, initiating treatment, and providing leadership to develop fracture liaison programs. Further, the symposium reviews the pathophysiology of metabolic bone disease. The assessment of osteopo-rosis and the estimation of fracture risk are discussed. Although most spine practitioners will not provide pharmacologic management, the use of these agents and their effective-ness are reviewed so that patients may be appropriately advised whether they have optimal treatment. Nutritional and vitamin deficiencies are common in osteoporotic pa-tients and can easily be addressed by spine practitioners.Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this symposium, participants will gain strategies to:

> Motivate spine practitioners to diagnosis and begin medical management of patients with metabolic bone disease.

> Recognize the value to patients of fracture liaison services.

> Identify patients at fracture risk from osteoporosis.

> Advise patients regarding pharmacologic therapy to manage osteoporosis.

Includes Lunch Moderators: Roger Hartl, Rod J. OskouianSpeakers: Doniel Drazen, J. Patrick Johnson, Noojan Kazemi, David O. Okonkwo, Charles Sansur Course Description: The use of image guidance in spine surgery has enhanced our ability to safely and reproducibly place hardware in the spine. There are many factors that can influence the efficacy of intraoperative navigation in the spine. Initially surgeons were using intraoperative naviga-tion on revision cases, but now it is routinely being used for one or two level cases as well as the cervical spine. The course is specifically designed for neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons who are practicing spine surgery and would like to learn more about spine navigation. In addition, it is for surgeons who are already using spine navigation but would like to extend the capabilities of their navigation system to do more complex cases. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

> Maximize spine hardware placement accuracy.

> Increase efficiency of spine navigation. > Describe bailout strategies.
