Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden @ Lindisfarne

Lindisfarne Primary has joined the 574 schools Australia wide that have become part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

Kitchen Garden Schools deliver regular kitchen and garden classes, enabling skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum. Whilst it is our aim that all children from Preschool to Year 6 will be involved in the project, initially, Year 3 and Year 4 classes will participate in the program. This term the students will be planning the gardens and learning valuable kitchen skills. Teachers will attend Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden professional development and we will begin acquiring necessary kitchen and garden resources. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association for their generous $5000 donation to kick start the program.

The Kitchen Garden program would be greatly enhanced by parental and wider community support. If you are interested in volunteering your time or you are able to contribute through the donation of any of the equipment listed below, please contact either myself ([email protected]) or Jo Hetherington ([email protected])

Some of the things we need:

• 2 x wheel barrows

• 2 x ridged grill pans, heavy based

• 2 x electric fry pans

• 2 x pasta machines, hand cranked

• 1 x food processor

• 2 x digital measuring scales – up to 6kg

Good quality knives – kitchen Garden trainers recommend ‘Global’ brand

• 2 x serrated

• 12 x paring

• 12 x cooks 13cm – 20cm

Mother’s Day Thank YouThank you to all the wonderful mums who volunteered their time to make such a beautiful range of gifts the children were able to purchase for their lucky mother this year. The stall was a huge success with all proceeds going to the Parents and Friends Association.

Year 4 Retreat Room4T are undertaking a project to convert the back room into an inviting retreat for reading and small group activities. If anyone has old bean bags at home that are not being used we would love them for our retreat space. Bean bags can be delivered straight to our classroom.

Thank you from Miss Turnbull and 4T

You have a Friend - Tweed Blanket AppealAs we approach winter, there are many people, including families, within our community who are in desperate need of warm bedding and jumpers. In conjunction with John Lee from You Have A Friend, we are asking the Lindisfarne community for the donation of new or second hand blankets, doonas and/or jumpers. These items can be placed in a collection bin in Student Administration and will be distributed directly to those in need in this region.

For more information on the work of this organisation, visit: http://www.youhaveafriend.org.au

Thank you for your kind support.

Cross CountryKindergarten took part in the annual cross country carnival on Thursday 1 May, with students from Preschool to Year 5. Miss Arnold had been practising with the Kindergarten students in sports sessions prior to this event. Kindergarten wore their house colours and were very enthusiastic and enjoyed running on the day. The highlight was when two students from each class ran with two teachers, Mrs Manning and Miss Read at the end of the morning. This was a memorable day for all the students involved.

The Alphabet TreeAfter adding most of the letters of the alphabet to The Alphabet Tree and learning to make words with the Word Bug, Kindergarten is now beginning to write sentences. We are learning to write using caterpillar sentences to help leave spaces between words and so far it has been lots of fun. Kindergarten boys and girls should be very proud of their sounding out and blending skills. They have written about some interesting things and have even begun to create class big books, taking inspiration from some well know children’s literature. Make sure you come in and take a look. The children would love to share their fantastic work with you.

Our beautiful Mummys

Thank you to all our lovely Mums who came in this week for our Mother’s day morning. The children were so excited to have their mums in the room with them and enjoyed making bracelets together. We had spent the past week talking about our Mums and why and how they are special and unique. The children made many choices when designing their own mugs in the Joeys room and when helping make up the words to the song they sang. Inviting parents into our room encourages the children to celebrate and share their contributions and achievements which helps develop a sense of belonging and comfort

for the children in their Preschool environment. Group projects also promote a sense of self and develop partnerships between

home and School. The children confidently participated in this experience and responded positively to their mums coming in

to visit.

Stage 3 News

No Stage 3 Assembly in Week 15A (Tuesday 20 May) due to the Public Speaking Semi-Finals starting at 1:45pm in the Mahers Lane Theatre. Parents are welcome to attend.

Heroes and VillainsIt is with great excitement, that Year 5 students commence the study of an English literature unit ‘Heroes and Villains’. The students will be exploring several types of texts and the ability of each to educate the reader or viewer of a moral message. Students willl analyse current day hero texts including visual images, web pages, movies, paintings, picture books, stories and television. They will be challenged to compare types of text and their effectiveness in conveying the desired message. Students will also explore Aboriginal and Asian texts with Hero and Villain themes also.

Our art work has been inspired by Heroes and Villains and the American artist, Roy Lichtenstein who is famously known for his comic book subjects.

Sharon Powell, Teacher 5P

Performing Arts and DancingThe students of Stage 3 are thoroughly enjoying their Dance and Drama lessons under the expert tuition of Casey Tangye and Amy Skene. They are learning many valuable skills and are looking forward to sharing these in the future.

Krissy Affleck, Stage 3 Coordinator

Term 2 has started with some excellent opportunities for dancing and moving. Lessons have started with Ms Casey on Monday afternoons in the shed, whilst Ms Hassell enthusiastically leads Stage 3 elective dance on Friday afternoons.

Here are a few words from our young inspired performing artists.

“In Year 5 dancing, we’ve been doing stretches. We also learnt moves like, turns, kicks, gallops and a bridge pull-up. We have started to learn a routine. Our nice dance teacher Ms Casey is teaching us lots of other moves.” by Josie Davies 5P

“5P’s experience in dance has been heaps of fun with Ms Casey. We get to listen to music and take our shoes off. It is the second best part of Mondays”. By Bailey Gadd 5P

“We have been learning to do all sorts of things such as turns, stretches, kicks and so much more. Ms Casey is really nice because she teaches us step by step. We are also starting to learn a dance that has great choreography. It is so much fun learning dance with Ms Casey.” By Georgia Wilson 5P

EngQuestOn 7 June, a group of Stage 3 students attended an after school workshop with Mrs Dowker and Miss Affleck called EngQuest. EngQuest is an engineering program designed to help kids understand the purpose and properties of engineering. We are learning how to make a solar cooker and on the way to building one we will learn about different types of engineering. We have already learnt about some of the properties of the solar cooker. This is an amazing program that develops teamwork and friendship. Check out the EngQuest site for more info and watch this space for updates.
