A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORJust like an award-winning wine, the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) gets better with age and we are proud to have renewed our longstanding partnership with the CWG for another three years.

Through our partnership with the CWG, Nedbank has made things happen in the wine industry for the past two decades and we are proud to see the growth and development that has taken place over the past 20 years.

Having retained our Level 2 B-BBEE rating under the codes for the sixth consecutive year, Nedbank is committed to uplifting the communities in which we operate and we are encouraged that the wine industry shares our commitment to transformation.

The developmental initiatives undertaken through the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Development Trust have been extended to include the new CWG VinPro Viticulture Protégé Programme and a partnership with Wine Training South Africa. This will see an injection of skills into the industry, complementing the work already done through the CWG Protégé Programme.

Nedbank is a bank of choice for wine producers, and our offering to the winemaking industry includes the services of a dedicated agriculture unit that combines specialist industry knowledge with extensive and relevant banking experience.

We thank you for your support.

Kind regardsMike BrownChief Executive Nedbank Group

FOREWORDAs an organisation we have achieved many milestones during the past 34 years. Last year we celebrated our 30th Auction and this year marks our 20th year with Nedbank as our partners.

One of the fundamental principles of the Cape Winemakers Guild is to raise the standard and international standing of South African wines. We achieve this by improving the quality of our wines through knowledge sharing and mutual support. Our annual Auction affords members the opportunity to experiment and select the best wines available to go under the hammer. It is also an ideal platform for the public to acquire some of the best wines produced by our members.

Through the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust we play an important role in the transformation of the South African Wine industry. Our Protégé Programme started in 2006 and we currently have eight Protégés in training. We are also involved with education of cellar workers and together with Vinpro have started a Viticulture Protégé Programme. All this would not be possible without the contributions of the Cape Winemakers Guild members through various fundraising projects, as well as generous donations from the Nedbank Foundation.

We would like to thank Mike Brown and Nedbank for the continued partnership of 20 years which has helped to establish the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction as the leading Auction of rare South African wines. The selection on offer at the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction will remain unique offerings of exclusive, limited edition wines from our members.

May I wish everyone a successful 2015 Auction.

SOUTH AFRICA’S FINEST WINEMAKERSInnovation, benchmarking and the sharing of knowledge spanning over thirty three years of winemaking excellence, is the proud accomplishment of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

The Guild, an association of some of South Africa’s finest winemakers, has evolved into a body of 46 members who jointly represent the pinnacle of South African wine achievement.

All experts in their respective fields, Guild members have played a significant role in the development of the South African wine industry. From the making of champion port-style wines, the establishment of Méthode Cap Classique and Cape blends, to the opening up of new, cooler wine regions, the introduction of sustainable farming and environmentally responsible wines, Guild members have always been at the forefront of innovation.

THE NEDBANK CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD DEVELOPMENT TRUSTThe Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust was established in 1999 to support social development through further education in the South African wine industry.

In 2014 the Cape Winemakers Guild joined forces with Wine Training South Africa (WTSA) and has donated R400 000 to assist with the SETA accreditation of WTSA courses. This has enabled WTSA to establish a national qualification whereby cellar workers can develop their winemaking skills through formal training.

The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust and Protégé Programme are funded by donations from the Nedbank Foundation as well as proceeds raised by Guild members at various charity auctions.

By cultivating, nurturing and empowering promising oenologists and viticulturists, the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme plays an active role in the transformation of the industry to ensure its long term health and sustainability.

The Protégé Programme was launched in 2006 to give aspirant winemakers the opportunity of working alongside and being mentored by the members of the Guild. Since then, 9 Protégés have graduated from the programme and now work as winemakers within the South African wine industry.

In 2014, following the success of the programme, the CWG joined forces with VinPro and launched the CWG VinPro Protégé Programme. This gives recently graduated viticulturists hands on training regarding the intricacies of cultivation practices to ensure quality grapes for the production of diverse wine types and styles.

This year, we have seven winemakers participating in the three year Oenology Protégé Programme and one viticulturist participating in the two and a half year CWG VinPro Viticulture Protégé Programme.

In addition to the internships, the Protégé Programme also offers Billy Hofmeyr AGRI Seta bursaries to final year Viticulture and Oenology students at Stellenbosch University and Elsenburg Agricultural College.

The grapes were hand-picked in February 2013 from block A (bush vines) which is planted on the famous Bottelary gravel soils. The grapes came into the cellar at optimum ripeness, with the following analyses before fermentation: 24.9°B; pH - 3.52; TA - 7.6 g/l. The juice stayed on the skins for 3 days at an average temperature of 26°C. Punch-downs were done every 2 hours during fermentation and the juice was separated from the skins at 4.5°B. After malolactic fermentation the CWG selected Pinotage went to 225 litre new French oak barrels for 19 months.

Tasting Notes: Dark red colour. Rich blackcurrant, dark cherries and cedar oak aromas. A big-structured Pinotage with intense dark fruit flavours. A complex middle leads to a smooth and pleasant finish. Great balance between fruit and oak will allow this Pinotage to age in the bottle for 10 years and more.

This wine will be ready for drinking in 8 to 12 years.

The grapes were picked between the 12th and 20th March and the components vinified and matured separately. The grapes were fully destalked and sorted. Bottled on 10th February 2014.

Tasting Notes: Vibrant, deep ruby. Lush and layered aroma of ripe cherry, jasmine and ganache; backed by leather and pencil notes. This savoury, graphite palate is well rounded by dark currant and dark chocolate and shows the complexity of Christmas cake. This full-bodied wine with its silky tannin is juicy with a fresh berry finish.

Jordan Chardonnay Auction Selection 2014

100% ChardonnayWine of Origin Stellenbosch

This reserve Chardonnay is traditionally made using natural, wild yeast with the grapes coming from the acclaimed Nine Yards Chardonnay vineyard. Intensely concentrated lemon-lime flavours and slow fermentation in 228 litre Burgundian oak barrels for twelve months has resulted in a classic style with a new world twist. Quartzite veins through the 600 million year old granite sub-strata provide the backbone for the mineral flavours. Regular barrel rolling accentuates the rich, leesy character in this elegantly expressive wine.

Tasting Notes: An iconic Chardonnay with intense, mineral, lemon-lime flavours and hints of butterscotch and vanilla. The full, rich mouthfeel and balanced oak integrate superbly with the tropical fruit finish.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

A blend of our finest barrique from our Porseleinberg site in the Swartland, and a barrique of our finest from a Stellenbosch vineyard with very close proximity to False Bay. Each block was vinified separately in concrete, using wild yeasts and matured in old French oak for 27 months. After assembling the wine, it was egg-white fined and bottled for the auction.

Tasting Notes: Floral notes abound on the nose, an indicator of the wines part Swartland pedigree; the palate shows an explosion of white pepper and spicy aromatics, as one would expect from a cooler maritime influenced vineyard.

The Drift Farm “Die Kans Vate” Single Vineyard Barbera 2013

100% BarberaWine of Origin Overberg

This is a small single vineyard Barbera planted in 2004. The wine was made in traditional open top fermenters with manual punch-downs. We played bagpipes and cello (obviously not at the same time) to the barrels to harmonise the tannin and give stability to the colour. It was always going to be a special wine – right from the start. We chose the best barrel for the Auction.

Tasting Notes: The wine shows intense fynbos and buchu aromas, framing dense blackberry and mulberry with a hint of toasty oak. The palate is super concentrated black fruits, mint, brambles and cherry. The tannins are very soft, but persistent.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

This wine will be ready for drinking now and until 2025.

Saronsberg Die Erf Shiraz 2013

100% ShirazWine of Origin Tulbagh

Hand-picked from our most consistent Shiraz vineyard (block 27), grown on gravelly soils at the foot of the Saronsberg. The grapes were bunch sorted, destemmed (10% kept whole bunch) and berry sorted. Only 60% of the berries were gently crushed into an open fermenter, the remainder kept whole. The must was de-juiced by 12% and given a four-day cold soak. Fermentation was allowed to start naturally, inoculated only after two-thirds of fermentation was completed. The wine was left on the skins for two weeks post-fermentation before being pressed into a new Allier French oak barrel. The wine was left on its lees for 10 months, spending 20 months in total in barrel.

Tasting Notes: The wine has a deep, dark purple colour with prominent red berry, delicate violet and floral flavours and undertones of spice. The oak is well balanced with a full-bodied mouthfeel, complemented by firm yet accessible tannins and a long finish.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

Although accessible now, this wine is best enjoyed if aged for at least 6 to 8 years.

Boplaas Daniel’s Legacy Cape Portuguese Red Blend 201341% Touriga Francesa, 39% Shiraz, 15% Touriga Nacional, 5% Tinta Barocca

Wine of Origin Western Cape

In celebration of Oupa Danie’s folly of mistakenly planting Tinta Barocca in place of Shiraz – after his sojourn to the Swartland in the early 70s in an old Chevy El Camino – which set Boplaas on a path of crafting fine fortifieds and Portuguese table wines in the Cape. Blended from the very finest barrels of Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Shiraz originating from low yielding old vines and traditionally vinified, has created a fulsome, buxomly fruited and age-worthy auction offering.

Tasting Note: Gregarious and slightly hulk-ish, this complex red exhibits a melange of black hedgerow fruits, exotic spice, sweet oak and savoury undertones which will pair perfectly with waterblommetjie potjie, braaied springbok loin, slow roast Karoo lamb. Or simply enjoy it in good company around the fireside during load-shedding. A wine my father would have been proud of.

This wine is ready for drinking now and until 2025.

Ataraxia Under The Gavel Chardonnay 2014

100% Chardonnay Wine of Origin Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge

Sourced from a single south-facing vineyard on The Skyfields, home to Ataraxia in the Hemel-en-Aarde outside Hermanus. Intensely interventionist fruit selection was followed by an extremely non-interventionist winemaking approach. Fermented in small, tight-grain French oak barriques, custom ordered from very specific Burgundian coopers, this wine was barrel aged for a further 9 months before being bottled.

Tasting Notes: This wine is The Skyfields terroir in a bottle! It expresses the ancient soils of this specific vineyard as well as the maritime influenced meso-climate of the vintage. Reflecting the very best of the New and Old World styles, the wine is signatured by minerality and effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense. A complex and precise Chardonnay.

Malolactic fermentation in barrel and 2 years in 50% new French oak, with the balance in second and 3rd fill French wood. We blended in 14% Cabernet Sauvignon to add structure, backbone and balance to the juicy Shiraz fruit.

Tasting Notes: Colour: Rich and Dark. Nose: Cedar Box and prunes, cinnamon and lovely warm spices. Christmas mince pies and salty liquorice on the back. Palate: Elegant and juicy on entry. Plums, dried spices and firm tannins to make this a wine that will age well.

To ensure maximum fruit and colour retention, the grapes were hand-picked in the cool of the night. The crushed berries were given a 56 hour cold maceration prior to fermentation. Pigeage took place 3 times a day to extract tannin and colour. Skins were pressed at 5°B. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. Matured for 22 months in one new and one second fill French oak barrel.

Tasting Notes: This dark red coloured wine has intense red fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry and cranberry, with underlying coconut and cinnamon spice on the nose. These exquisite aromas carry through onto a rich, creamy palate where it lingers for moments after the wine exits the palate. Silky, well-integrated and elegant tannins keep this wine in perfect harmony and balance.

The ability to read a vintage, years of research and trials to find the perfect combination between terroir and origin, grain and toasting levels of the right wood, age and sizes of barrels, cooper’s craftsmanship and winemaking techniques have resulted in a work of art which I’m proud to put my name to.

Tasting Notes: This oaked style nods towards Pessac-Léognan, but has a Cape character all of its own. Savoury, grapefruity and pithy with creamy, vanilla oak undertones. If you can put away some bottles for a couple of years, you can delay the pleasure and have it back with interest for anything up to 6 years after harvest. Serve with alikreukel and shimeji mushroom stew.

As much as we try to keep Pinot Noir our flagship, Chardonnay appears to say ‘catch me’. Chardonnay has magic and seductive powers wooing producers and consumers on all corners of the globe. This vintage presented superb quality fruit produced on high density plantings, picked at optimum ripeness and pressed ‘whole bunch’ to release purity and length of palate. Tasting Notes: Aromatic layers of apricot and cantaloupe linger over creamy yeast and mild French oak wood tones, finally resonating a long citrus and quince finish. Maturation and longevity will reward and contribute added complexity.

Simonsig Heirloom Shiraz 2013

100% ShirazWine of Origin Stellenbosch

Full, ripe Shiraz grown on deep red weathered shale soil was picked at the end of March and fermented in a concrete tank with regular pump-overs. Slightly cooler fermentation at 24°C added fresh fruit and softer extraction. Maceration lasted 4 weeks and the wine was racked straight into new Nevers oak seasoned for 36 months. Regular rackings helped to soften the tannins and expose the fruit. Bottled after 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Fresh sour cherry and dried herbs dominate the spicy French oak aromas. Forest floor and earthy truffle notes mask any sweet flavours. Lovely wild herb, white pepper and dried fynbos characters combine to show the full spectrum of Shiraz fruit expression. A firm and tightly knit tannin structure promises excellent maturation potential.

Paul Cluver Auction Selection Pinot Noir 2013

100% Pinot NoirWine of Origin Elgin

The grapes were selected from our highest lying Pinot Noir vineyards and are all new clones - 667, 113, 115. Harvested, cold soaked for 8 days with the fermentation starting naturally and then inoculated. Punched down twice a day. After fermentation, only free run juice was transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine was then left in barrel, of which only 25% was new, for 11 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes: ‘Understated’, the colour is gentle and alluring, the nose reticent but intriguing. All in all, captivating! Initially, red stone fruit combined with sweet cherry blossom fragrances dominate. Underlying, there are whiffs of raw meat and wet, warm earth. There are also hints of wild mushroom and pepper. The texture is astounding and where the power of this wine lies. The integration of oak adds to its finesse and aristocracy.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

Silverthorn Wines Big Dog Méthode Cap Classique 2010

60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot NoirWine of Origin Western Cape

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were both gently whole-bunch pressed. The Chardonnay juice was barrel fermented and aged in old French oak barrels in order to enhance creaminess and palate weight. The Pinot Noir juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks to accentuate the berry fruit characters. After blending, the wine was bottle fermented and spent 53 months on the lees before being disgorged and spending an extra 6 months on the cork.

Tasting Notes: The Chardonnay imparts distinct citrus and chalky characters with hints of subtle oak, while the Pinot Noir adds bright strawberry notes. The palate is rich and creamy with a gentle mousse. Careful cellaring on the cork will further enhance the complexity and character and will greatly reward your patience.

Best enjoyed from 2018 onwards.

Nitida Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Twenty Eight 2014

100% Sauvignon BlancWine of Origin Durbanville

We have been working with barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc for many years and believe this to be a classic example. Partially fermented in seasoned barrels and some new wood, with grapes from great vineyards, this wine was bottled after 10 weeks barrel ageing. Further, this wine has been matured for 12 months in the bottle allowing the further development of classic Sauvignon Blanc cool climate characteristics.

Tasting Notes: Complex wine highlighting nuances of cold climate Sauvignon Blanc and hints of new wood. Green and yellow fruit, quince and litchi, supported by crisp acidity. This wine shows aspects of both the pyrazine and tropical fruit styles. The bottle ageing over the last year has further enhanced the asparagus character so often associated with great Sauvignon Blanc.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

Enjoy now and for the next 5 years.

Graham Beck Wines Non Plus Ultra Méthode Cap Classique 2008

81% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot NoirWine of Origin Western Cape

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were whole bunch pressed and only the cuvée fraction used. A small portion of Chardonnay was fermented in Piece Champenoise barrel to promote the creamy texture and complexity. The Pinot Noir adds palate weight and length of flavour. The wine was matured for 72 months on the lees prior to disgorgement.

Tasting Notes: Great brioche aromatics with gentle mineral notes. On the nose there is a dominant note of lemon and crisp apple fruit, with just a touch of yeast and cashew. On the nose and palate entry - fresh lime and ripe citrus. Rich raspberry notes burst on the palate with a creamy and gentle mousse, ensuring richness and finesse. On the palate the mousse is rolling and full. A softer, pillowing breadth starts to fill in, yet the wine stays very focussed and savoury, with lovely weight and texture.

Note: This wine was sold at the Auctions of 2013 (40 cases) and 2014 (60 cases). All with different time on the

lees and disgorgement dates.

The grapes were all hand harvested and separately fermented during the cool morning hours. Fermentation was done in open top tanks with pump-overs and punch-down by hand 4 to 5 times during the first half of fermentation and twice a day during the last part of fermentation. Total maturation for 14 to 16 days. Malolactic fermentation was in French oak barrels. After racking off the lees, the wine was further matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels with the balance made up of second and third fill barrels.

The grapes were hand-picked in the cool of early morning. Grape bunches were gently destalked and lightly crushed. On the sorting table, all excess stalks and rotten berries were carefully removed by hand. Fermentation took place in small 300 litre open top oak barrels with yeast WE 372 being added to the juice. The wines were punched down manually 5 times a day ensuring maximum colour extraction from the skins. Each variety was separately vinified and blended after 18 months of maturation.

Tasting Notes: This wine has a pitch black core with a deeply rich hue, leading to a nose that dazzles with vanilla, blackberry, liquorice and cherry. Whiffs of wild flowers and a touch of cedar spice add refined depth and complexity, all coated by incredibly fine, chalky tannins. Villiera Meteor Méthode Cap Classique 2008

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot MeunierWine of Origin Stellenbosch

A selection of perfectly healthy, early picked fruit was whole bunch pressed in a pneumaticbag press. Only the cuvée (500 litres/ton) was settled and naturally fermented. The final cuvée is comprised of all 3 Champagne varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier. The blend is dominated by Chardonnay to improve maturation potential and a portion was fermented in used barrels for extra complexity. The red grapes add body, roundness, and flavour. After stabilisation and addition of liqueur de tirage, the wine was bottled for second fermentation. After 5 years on the lees, this sparkling wine was riddled and disgorged. A small addition of dosage has ensured great balance.

Tasting Notes: Rich, biscuity and slightly spicy on the nose with a hint of berry fruit and roasted almonds on the palate, developing finesse and complexity on the aftertaste. The wine has evolved over the last couple of years, developing more intensity and a creamier texture and will still benefit by another year or two in the bottle.

40 cases of this wine were previously sold on the 2013 Auction.

Chenin Blanc Wine of Origin Swartland

This is a blend of 85% Chenin Blanc and 15% Clairette Blanche. The Chenin Blanc grapes are from a single old bush vine vineyard from the northern part of the Paardeberg in the Swartland, growing in sandy soils of granite origin. The Chenin Blanc was picked at around 24°B. The Clairette Blanche is from a similar site and was picked at a very low sugar (19.5°B) to preserve the acidity that is inherently low in this variety. The grapes were whole bunch pressed. The juice was then run to 400 litre barrels after minimal settling and the fermentation was allowed to start naturally. After fermentation, the wine was topped and matured ‘sur lie’ for 10 months in French oak, with regular lees stirring. Only 2nd and 5th fill barrels were used.

Tasting Notes: This wine has a stunning, light golden hue. The aromas on the nose are amazingly intense and complex. There are hints of white peach, pineapple and quince jelly. There is a hint of toasted almonds and citrus blossom. The palate is full and rich. This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

This wine is ready to drink but will benefit with ageing for a further 5 years.

Savage Wines CWG “Follow The Line” 2013

1/3 Cinsault, 1/3 Grenache, 1/3 SyrahWine of Origin Western Cape

The grapes are meticulously sourced from a number of altitude and maritime vineyards from around the Western Cape, farmed by passionate South Africans. The small, hand-selected parcels receive much love and attention through the growing season, with each vineyard’s unique terroir contributing in its own special way to the blend.

In the cellar, minimal intervention, local clay amphora and old large format French Oak are combined to ensure that the essence of South African terroir is captured in the wines.

Tasting Notes: Bright red fruit and spice, prominent white and black pepper with hints of rose water. The wine shows restraint and elegance.

Wines that are Savage by name, not Savage by nature.

Mullineux Trifecta Chenin Blanc 2013

100% Chenin BlancWine of Origin Swartland

The Trifecta Chenin Blanc comes from our three best Swartland vineyards. One Chenin vineyard is grown on schist soil, one on granite soil and one on quartz soil; bringing depth, freshness and spiciness to the wine. The grapes are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed to barrel where they are fermented naturally. After blending, the wine was bottled after one year.

Tasting Notes: Chenin Blanc notes of apples and lemon with a subtle hint of fresh herb. The rounded old-vine Swartland Chenin character on the palate continues with a subtle saltiness, apple, followed by a peach pit minerality and texture.

Drink this wine now to enjoy life a little bit more, but it will only get better with a bit of age.

Neil Ellis Insignium 2012

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cinsaut noir Wine of Origin Cabernet Sauvignon – Jonkershoek / Cinsaut noir – Groenekloof

Exquisite parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsaut noir were fermented separately in open top fermenters. A series of punch-downs and pump-overs were employed to manage extraction. Further maceration followed before racking to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine spent 20 months in French oak barrels (300 litre and 500 litre). 75% first fill (Cabernet) and 25% older barrels (Cinsaut noir). Bottled in December 2013.

Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red colour, the 2012 Insignium shows aromas which reflect the climate of the vintage while maintaining a delicate freshness. On the palate, the ripe red fruit and the spices, along with deep floral notes, define this wine’s complex structure. The palate is succulent, rich, enveloping and sweet thanks to the presence of dense, supple rounded tannins. The vibrancy of the wine contributes to the excellent expressiveness of the flavours and persistence. Seamless, sophisticated and stylish.

Drink now, through to 2025.

Boplaas Ouma Cloete Straw Wine 2013

100% ViognierWine of Origin Calitzdorp

Honouring my family’s vinous heritage going back to my great, great grandmother Cloete from Constantia, who left the lush cool valley for the dry hinterland of the Klein Karoo in the mid-1800s. This maiden vintage straw wine was crafted from the most raisined sun dried bunches of Viognier, fermented in traditional lagars with manual pigeage to extract maximum flavour and aromatics. This complex bright gold straw wine will make an ideal accompaniment to traditional Cape Malay or aromatic Moroccan fare; or perhaps enjoyed with desserts, such as Peach Melba or a summer berry Pavlova. Best enjoy chilled and in good cheer.

Tasting Notes: This rich, golden-coloured natural sweet dessert wine brims with exotic fruits, dried apricot, peach and melon with honeyed top notes.

30 cases of this wine were previously sold on the 2014 Auction.

This wine is ready for drinking now until 2030.

TokaraTribute 2011

100% Cabernet SauvignonWine of Origin Stellenbosch

This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the two consistently best performing vineyards on Tokara Stellenbosch. The grapes were hand-picked and placed in a cold store overnight. The following day they were crushed directly into large wooden fermenters. Fermentation began spontaneously resulting in a long cold soak. Total maceration on the skins was for a period of around 4 weeks after which the wine was drained off and skins pressed in our basket press. The wines spent a total of twenty-two months in 60% new French oak and the rest being older French oak barriques. The wine was bottled unfiltered in February 2013.

Tasting Notes: This wine displays a dark garnet colour. The nose is that of dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit with intense aromas of mocha, cedar wood and fennel bulb. The palate is full and rich with dark fruit and heady notes. This wine is intensely textured and needs time to evolve. This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

Drink now but the wine will reward with cellaring for up to 15 years from harvest.

Jordan Sophia 2012

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 14% Cabernet FrancWine of Origin Stellenbosch

A blend of the best ‘Cobblers Hill’ barrels and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has been named ‘Sophia’ after the legendary mother of Faith, Hope and Charity. Representing the characteristics of the three Bordeaux varieties that make up this exceptional wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes were harvested from the best hillside vineyards at Jordan, which overlook Table Mountain and False Bay. Fermented at 28°C with three pump-overs daily, over the fermenting cap. After pressing, the wine was racked to barrel where it completed malolactic fermentation. The wine spent a total of 26 months in 225 litre French oak barrels to integrate the rich tannins and add complexity.

Tasting Notes: Complex, dark chocolate, black cherry and cassis intertwine with rich blackberry fruit and hints of vanilla and spice from the integrated French oak. Densely layered ripe tannins add to the opulent finish. Well-structured, this wine will reward careful cellaring for many years to come.

The grapes were selected from 27 year old Chardonnay vineyards, the oldest on the property. After pressing and settling, the wines were transferred to barrel and fermented without inoculation. The barrels used for this wine are from selected Burgundian cooperages, one third was new wood. The wine was left on the gross lees for 9 months before racking, stabilisation and bottling.

Tasting Notes: The first impression the wine gives is expressive citrus character on the nose. The palate is bursting with flavour, starting with lime notes and carrying through to a concentrated mid-palate with a very long, lingering mineral aftertaste.

Mullineux “The Gris” Semillon 2014

100% Semillon Gris Wine of Origin Swartland

This very rare wine is made from 100% Semillon Gris from a 56 year old heritage, dry-farmed vineyard grown on the granite soils of the Paardeberg in the Swartland. The grapes were picked by hand, early in the morning, while the air was still cool. In the winery, the Semillon Gris was whole-bunch pressed gently. The juice was settled overnight and then racked to two neutral barrels where it fermented naturally, and eventually also completed malolactic fermentation. After one year on the lees (but not stirred) the wine was racked clean and bottled. Only 500 bottles were made.

Tasting Notes: A saline mineral nose wrapped around grapefruit pith. Spiced high notes of clove and powered ginger. Followed by a lengthy, taut palate of chamomile and saffron fronds. This wine keeps you coming back for another sip. I chose this as my CWG wine for its rarity, intrigue and harmony.

This wine will age very well, so if drinking young, please decant.

Cape Point Vineyards Auction White 2014

51% Sauvignon Blanc, 49% SemillonWine of Origin Cape Peninsula

The grapes for the Auction White were picked from the Isliedh and Semillon Vineyards on the Cape Point Vineyards property, from extremely weak vines yielding only 4 tons per hectare. The fruit was whole bunch pressed in an oxidative manner and put to barrel without settling. Spontaneous fermentation took place in older 600 litre barrels with the blend compiled directly after ferment. The wine then spent 10 months in barrel with regular battonage before being bottled in January 2015.

Tasting Notes: Classic Cape Point citrus and stone fruit. The wine has great length and depth and shows its origin with a saline mineral core.

A classic maritime white.

AA Badenhorst Family Wines “Geel-Kapel” Muscat de Frontignan 2013

100% Muscat de FrontignanWine of Origin Swartland

Muscat de Frontignan also known as Wit Muskadel (South Africa), Muscat Blanc á Petits Grains, Muscat Blanc, and Muscat Canelli in the USA. The grapes are from old vines grown in the alluvial and sandstone soils of Moutonshoek Valley. Whole cluster fermentation, where after the wine was matured in an old cask for one and a half years before it was bottled. There is a sediment as the wine was not filtered, nor did it have the life fined out of it, neither has sulphur been added.

Tasting notes: Yes, SAWIS approved. They commented that the wine is turbid, hazy, tannic and astringent. I can’t agree more. They didn’t say anything about the colour though, which is an attractive amber colours – but of course colour has no taste.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

This wine will be ready for drinking in 10 years’ time.

Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2012

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 15% Cabernet FrancWine of Origin Simonsberg

Grapes from 27 year old vineyards were picked at 24°B. At the cellar, the grapes were destemmed, sorted and crushed into open top fermenters. The skins were punched down every two hours for five days. After malolactic fermentation, the blend was made and the wine went to 100% new French oak barrels for 24 months.

Tasting Notes: Perfume, flowers and blackcurrant are prominent on the nose, with a palate that is rich and complex. The wine has a beautiful balance with a long savoury finish that leaves you appetised for more.

This wine will be ready for drinking from 2017 onwards.

Vriesenhof Pinot Noir 2010 (1.5L bottles)

100% Pinot NoirWine of Origin Stellenbosch

This wine is a blend of different clones from the 2010 vintage. A selection of barrels from mainly 777 and 115 from our Pinot Noir vineyards on decomposed granite soils is responsible for the blend. As the ripening of the clones is very different, the wine was blended after malolactic fermentation in the barrels. Maturation was completed after 13 months in heavy toasted French oak before bottling.

Tasting Notes: Strong earth forest floor, pine needles and some dampness are the main features of this wine. In time it will become more balanced and creamy, with the wood underpinning the mouthfeel.

This wine is packed in wooden boxes.

50 cases of this wine were previously sold on the 2011 Auction.

Enjoy now through to 2020.
