In every measure available, our donors express a deep commitment to the IWK Health Centre. Despite a global crisis and uncertain financial times locally, people of the Maritimes increased the amount they donated to the Foundation in the past year. Given tight budgets, your support is more important than ever.

We are also close to the end of an ambitious five-year Children’s Site Redevelopment Project that has seen the quality of life for patients and their families dramatically improve, which has a positive effect on staff, volunteers and health outcomes. Our donors contributed more than 25 per cent to the project costs.

As we look forward, we see many areas of need that must be addressed to improve patient care, foster world-class research and support community health in the Maritimes. Any structure – a building or an organization – must be anchored on a strong foundation to be successful. Our Foundation is built on the bedrock of our communities: you, our donors.

With you, anything is possible.

Justin Bower can’t wait until the fall. The nine-year-old will learn the basics of hockey, including how to skate, like many other boys his age during a new program in Bedford, Nova Scotia. But Justin, who has Cerebral Palsy, will have a slightly different experience.

He will be learning hockey skills on a sledge purchased from an IWK Foundation community grant to Easter Seals to purchase smaller sledges for young novice hockey players.

“He is so excited,” said Justin’s mother, Shannon. “Before he can play hockey, he has to learn the basics of handling the sledge, like other novice hockey players who have to learn to skate first.” She shares a treasured picture of Canadian para-Olympian Billy Bridges teaching Justin during a weekend camp, two years ago.

There are several sledge hockey teams in the Maritimes, open to anyone who wants to join, players are generally aged 12 to young adulthood. Shannon says the older players can have tremendous upper body strength and be too fast for novice players like Justin.

With funding from the IWK Foundation, the IWK supports a number of community projects each year to promote healthy and active living, peer and support groups for adolescents and teenagers, and programs for women and children’s health across the Maritimes. About $233,000 was distributed for Community Grants in 2009/2010.

Liz and Jim Hutchinson of Halifax didn’t see it coming. A vibrant, positive woman looking after a dozen neighbourhood children in a second career, Liz went from a clear mammogram to a double mastectomy within six months. Months of chemotherapy preceded the surgery to shrink the aggressive tumour, and radiation followed.

But Liz and Jim had help regaining their balance from their neighbours, friends and family... and from the caregivers at the Breast Health Clinic at the IWK.

Jim’s voice chokes up when he recalls how their world was shaken by Liz’s diagnosis. “I can’t say enough about the staff involved in Liz’s care,” says Jim, “They were incredible. They looked after everything. They made sure we had all the information we needed.”

“We had a care co-ordinator, we could call at any time,” confirms Liz. “It didn’t matter how big or small the question was. She was wonderful.”

A year in remission, but “not entirely out of the woods” as she puts it, Liz is looking forward to the future. Her daughter, Jennifer, is expecting her first child later this year. She’ll be delivering at the IWK, soon to be a special place for the Hutchison family for a new reason.

PATIENTS BENEFIT FROM WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH

INDIVIDUALS (GIFTS OF $1000+)

It’s not like 15-year-old Shelby Beals ever lets anything slow her down. Not even the pain, cramps and fatigue from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Diagnosed about six years ago, this outgoing Grade 10 student from Enfield, NS, says she feels on top of the world ever since joining a study by IWK gastroenterologist Dr. Anthony Otley. The study is evaluating the effectiveness of a new drug on youth with IBD.

“It’s been my miracle drug,” says Shelby, who injects herself every two weeks with a dose. “I didn’t really realize how bad my health was until I didn’t have the pain and tiredness anymore. It’s been great... I can do whatever I want without worrying.” That will include six weeks of camping in the Rockies this summer with Army cadets.

Dr. Otley says the IWK is a centre of research excellence into IBD as the Maritimes has the highest incidence of the condition in the world. There are several studies underway at the IWK, including plotting the location of people with IBD to check for an environmental explanation for our high rates of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

“Being a world-class centre means our patients benefit from participating in research studies at the IWK and shared with other health centres through international research networks,” says Dr. Otley. “Our patients receive treatments they wouldn’t normally be able to access. In the process, the research helps us find new ways to treat IBD, and learn more so we will, one day, be able to prevent it.”

When Matthew was seven, his world started falling apart. It started with an uninformed decision by staff at his old school, and was compounded by an adverse reaction to medications intended to help him focus and calm down. It was an incredibly difficult time for the family.

“Matthew was angry, he was frustrated, he was aggressive, he hated himself,” recalls his mother, Christine. “My husband and I wondered what was happening. This wasn’t our little boy with a heart of gold that we had been used to. His self-esteem had bottomed out.”

This past March, Matthew was accepted into the IWK’s Child and Family Day Treatment Program. During the 14-week program, children and their families participate in individual, group and family therapy sessions. Children attend school at the IWK four days a week and are assessed and helped by a comprehensive team of professionals.

Nurse Judy Ashley-LeBlanc says Matthew is also coached in other skills to help him cope such as anger management and relaxation. The team took him off all medication within two weeks of starting the program. “Two months later, I have my sweet child back,” says Christine. “He’s feeling better. He’s happy. I don’t know what we would have done without this program.”

She hopes that breaking the silence about adolescent mental health will help other families who are having difficulties and don’t know where to turn. “The IWK program works.”

Grayson Googoo has the patience few 14-year-olds can claim. The stoic teen from Membertou, Cape Breton, spends four days a week, five hours a day, at his home-away from home, the IWK, on a dialysis machine that filters impurities from his blood, doing the work of his damaged kidneys.

Grayson says he’s grateful viewers of the 25th annual Telethon last year responded to a Power Hour plea for nearly $35,000 to purchase a new dialysis machine for the IWK. Nearly $2 million was spent on priority equipment last year.

“I’d like to tell them thanks,” he says. “The dialysis is making me feel better.”

In 2008, Grayson was running a fever and feeling tired. He had a common infection, but, sadly, it had damaged his kidneys before being discovered. Doctors also discovered that Grayson had autoimmune problems.

While medication kept him out of hospital for nearly a year, Grayson had to revisit the IWK last summer for a month. In February, he started becoming short of breath and having chest pains; his failing kidneys were stressing his heart.

Despite his struggles, Grayson is optimistic about returning home soon; he was put on the kidney transplant list in May. “A new kidney will be awesome.”

2008January: IWK patients and staff move into the newly constructed 6 Link Hematology, Oncology, Nephrology Pediatric Inpatient Unit, named in honour of Belle and Colin MacDonald, Sr. It comprises 19 inpatient, five isolation rooms and a pharmacy.

May: The IWK Foundation donates an additional $2.25 million to defray a $9-million increase in the project budget; the Province agrees to fund the remaining $6.75 million.

December: The first surgery in the new Ron Joyce Operating Suite is held December 19. This facility includes five state-of-the-art operating rooms, and a digital platform that enables IWK surgeons to consult with colleagues around the world.

2009The Laboratories are amalgamated in a new location.

2010February: The new Children’s Day Surgery and Recovery space opened to its first patients. It includes 16 private areas for patients and families to prepare for, and recover from, surgery.

March: The Alan Covill Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Unit opens. It includes more family friendly space, two exam rooms, three intervention rooms and two flex rooms, as well as procedure and recovery space.

April: The remaining two operating rooms open: one designated for general surgery and one for Orthopedics.

June: Renovations to Children’s Site Pediatric Medical Unit on 7th Floor and the final two rooms of the Ron Joyce Operating Suite are complete. This signals the successful completion of the project.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this vision become a reality; bringing top-notch, family-centred care for patients and families and state-of-the-art facilities for caregivers.

The original IWK Children’s Hospital was designed in the late 1960’s when standards and practices in health care were quite different than today. To align the physical structure with its commitment to excellent care, the IWK Foundation jumpstarted the redevelopment with funding from the “It’s About Family’ Campaign. This was the beginning of the Children’s Site Redevelopment Project (CSRP).

2004Overcrowded clinic space was enhanced through the opening of a new Medical Day Assessment and Treatment Unit; within this renovated space is a new Day Treatment Unit.

2005The Provincial Government approves the IWK’s five-year, $48 million project to renovate and retrofit 160,000 square feet of space and construct 48,000 square feet of new space. The Province generously commits $36 million to the CRSP budget. The IWK Foundation launches a $12-million campaign to raise the balance.

2006As a family-centred care institution, the IWK consults with families and youth to ensure the CSRP meets their needs.

Construction begins.

2007The IWK Foundation reaches its goal of raising $12 million for the CSRP. More than 75 donors believed in this important project.

December: IWK patients, families and staff celebrate the completion of the newly constructed 7 Link Colonel Harland Sanders Medical Surgical Neurosciences Unit with 28 private, inpatient rooms and an activity area.

Paul Conrod, Vice Chair

“I am truly honoured to be considered for Chair of the IWK Health Centre Foundation. As a father of three healthy daughters, a husband, and a community member, the IWK has had an impact on my family. We often hear stories about people whose lives have been touched or changed by caregivers, researchers and surgeons at the Health Centre. The expertise here is second to none and the Maritimes wouldn’t be the same without the IWK. Maritimers have had a long history of strong charitable giving and I am extremely thankful to our incredible donors. We are really making a difference for the children, youth and women cared for by the IWK.”

Jim Dickson, Chair

There is nothing better than being involved with an organization like the IWK Foundation, which brings people and businesses together to support one of our most precious resources: our children, women and families. The Board is grateful for the sustained commitment by our donors who keep giving year after year. We promise to keep your trust as we support the ever-growing need for equipment, programs, and services at the IWK.

Most patients at the IWK, like 11-year-old Jennifer Jennings, have never met Elizabeth Johnson, but she is a very important person in their ongoing care. An administrative assistant in the Diagnostic Imaging department of the IWK, Elizabeth is a Superstar. She’s been making an automatic monthly donation to the IWK Foundation since joining the Health Centre in 2002.

Elizabeth is one of many employees who view their connection to the IWK as more than a job. Donors who sign up to give a minimum of $15 a month on an ongoing basis join the group of IWK Superstars. “I’ve seen how very little things make a huge difference,” says Elizabeth. Toys, DvD’s, music or books provided through donations are good distractions to help little patients undergo scans without sedation. “I’m not going to be buying an MRI scanner anytime soon,” she jokes. “But I can do this and make a difference.”

Jennifer was diagnosed with a very rare condition in March 2010 that causes muscle weakness and skin rashes. Except for a week in May when she returned to Sydney,

she’d been in the IWK for 11 weeks when she and Elizabeth meet. “Thank you for being a donor,” Jennifer tells Elizabeth. Jennifer’s mother adds: “Your generosity really enriches and brightens the lives of so many here at the IWK. Thank you.”

Critically ill patients can spend months, even years, at the Health Centre or back and forth between home and clinics and may require care from many specialists at the IWK. IWK Superstars like Elizabeth are helping patients access needed resources, state-of-the-art surroundings, top-notch expertise and supportive programs every step of the way, no matter how long the journey.

Susan Kerslake’s magic face-painting brush adorns six-year-old Joshua Thompson at Tuesday’s Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Clinic at the IWK. Joshua – like the other young patients here - will need regular assessment, medication, and treatments until a cure is found. CF is an enzyme disorder that affects digestive and lung functions.

“Susan is definitely the best part of coming to the clinic,” says Joshua’s father, Bruce.

“Awesome,” is the word Joshua, an avid hockey player, uses to describe Susan. Awesome indeed.

Susan’s been volunteering at the IWK for more than 25 years and she’s truly adopted the kids she paints. Besides annual donations to the IWK Foundation, Susan has also made a planned gift, bequesting her estate to the IWK Foundation.

“I don’t have children of my own and I have had a long association with the IWK,” explains Susan. “The children at the IWK are my children.”

She’s designated her gift for research; she sees how research has improved the lives of the young people she sees in clinic every week.

“I believe breakthroughs are made doing collaborative research,” she says. “Great things are discovered when scientists are able to play around in a lab with things that interest them.”

“The disease is very controllable now,” agrees Bruce. “With all our medical advances, I am sure we will beat Cystic Fibrosis.”

Planned gifts are becoming a more important source of funding for the IWK Foundation. Planned gifts can include money, stock, real property, or endowments that generate income to fund programs well into the future.

It could be Summerside’s Parker Murray’s outgoing manner that makes him an unstoppable sales force. Or the folk-art feel of his original birdhouses and stools. Or, it could be that children raising money to help the IWK help children is irresistible to kind-hearted summer residents of a PEI campground.

Whatever the reason, at eight years of age Parker Murray is already a genuine individual and impressive philanthropist. The Grade 2 student raised $100, and presented the cheque to the IWK Foundation on CTv during the 2010 Telethon. “It’s exciting,” says Parker, who has never been treated at the IWK, although his “girlfriend” in Halifax has received care after a bicycling accident. “It seemed like a good idea to give the money to the IWK.”

“He’s got a very caring nature,” explains his mom, Wendy, whose whole family is involved with community philanthropy. “He’s very much in tune with giving back.”

Young donors are encouraged through a variety of Foundation programs and partnerships, including The Big Fish award for fundraising excellence in Maritime schools, and Youth & Philanthropy celebrations. Encouraging compassion and volunteerism today will help our youth shape the world they will inherit. Based on his creativity, kindness and generosity, Parker is an excellent example for other young Maritimers.

Four-year-old Zöe Gagnon-Brideau is an animated child with twinkling eyes and an infectious smile. The only sign that she is recovering from a third heart surgery is her portable Iv.

“Everyone knows Zöe,” says Bilingual Services Co-ordinator and trained nurse, Lucille Cormier. “Everyone has taken her into their hearts.”

Caring knows no language; but the IWK is a primarily English-speaking Health Centre, and Zöe and her family are francophone from Sainte-Irénée, NB. Lucille’s job – and her passion – is to assure francophone families understand what is happening to their loved ones and are able to make informed decisions and participate in care.

“When you are sick, you are sick in your own language,” says Lucille. ”Even if you are bilingual, you may not be bilingual in medical terminology.” Understanding medical information is one thing, she notes, “but it is often very hard to express your emotions in a second language.”

Lucille tries to bridge that gap, including introducing francophone parents to each other so they can get a little taste of home while staying with their children in Halifax.
