Rowboats, Sailboats and Submarines Topic Work w/c 22.06.20 Our topic work this week will, again, be linked to History, and our topic is: The 1960s The 1960s is a decade. This means it is 10 years long. Last week, we looked at what life was like for people who lived in Britain during the 1960s and thought about how it is different to our lives now. This week, we will look at some important events which happened during the 1960s. Like last week, each day, you will be given an introduction to a topic and a chance to work on some historical skills. You will also be given a more creative activity to do. Monday 22nd June
Today, our important event is: The Men’s Football World Cup. This happened
in 1966.
Introduction
In 1966, the men’s football World Cup
tournament was held in England. This was
very exciting as it had never been held in
England before. England reached the final
where they played West Germany. West
Germany scored first, and it seemed like
England were going to lose. However,
they fought back and eventually won 4-2.
They were then awarded the trophy by
the Queen! This is the only time the
men’s football team has ever won the
football World Cup.
You can watch some highlights from the match here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDuHPvNtgg (FifaTV 1966 World Cup
Final).
While you are watching, talk to an adult about the following:
• What do you notice about the football kit?
• What do you notice about the ball?
• What do you notice about the people in the crowd?
• How do you think it felt to win the World Cup? Why?
• People in Britain still talk about the 1966 World Cup even though lots of
people weren’t alive when England won. Why do you think this is?
