IN THIS ISSUE: SEPT 23 - OCT 7

Its that time of year again. I can smell itin the air… Its time for me and myhusband to scrape up every last penny

we have on this earth and purchase ourbeloved Bear Creek Music FestivalTickets. With late night sets consisting ofMedeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood, TheTrey Anastasio Band, New Mastersounds,Zach Deputy, and Lettuce we really haveno other choice. Buy tickets or die trying.

I remember last year, the super funkyNew Mastersounds played a fantastic latenight set. Their drummer, Simon Allen, visited us at our campsite even later thatnight. He approached our fire in completesilence and sat down next to us.

We didn’t even know who the guywas before he eventually began to speakwith us. When we detected the Englishaccent we all knew exactly who he was.

He asked us how we liked the show, andwe commenced to make small talk withthe man we had all just been staring at (inawe) for about two hours.

Bear Creek Music Festival is held inLive Oak Florida. Go to:http://www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com/to learn about ticket pricing and (moreimportantly!) the kick-ass Lineup. Whatare some of my favorites, you ask?Ahem… Rubblebucket, Saint Francis, &Dopapod, of course. If you are hungry fornew music, look them up. I promise, 60%of the time, they’ll work every time.

I’d love to see a few 11th Hour read-ers in the crowds at Bear Creek. But fornow, I’ll settle for seeing a few 11th Hourreaders on our Facebook page! Come saysomething interesting!! You guys aregreat. See you at happy hour.

Icannot get over how many students arenow swarming Statesboro. Havinggone to a small high school, and a small

liberal arts university, I never quite got toknow what it’s like to be surrounded bypeople my age everywhere I go. In Wal-Mart you have to stand and wait just toenter each isle, and you can forget aboutfinding a good parking space. Last time Iwent, they didn’t even have a cart availablefor me to use!

This, among other reasons, is why Ibelieve it is important for us, yes even stu-dents, to think about where we are spend-ing our money, and why. Why are wedumping all of our monetary resources ona company who doesn’t treat its customersor its employees well? Wal-Mart doesn’tcare about the quality of their products, and they sure as hell don’t care about thequality of their customer service.

They are exploiting foreign laborerswith low wages, and they are exploitingAmerican laborers by treating them care-lessly and making it nearly impossible forthem to get benefits. My husband, who putup with their crap as an employee for overa year, can vouch for that.

As the economy steadily weakens,Wal-Mart stands strong and mighty.Though they attribute their success to thelow prices, I believe they are relying on thedesperation of the masses to secure theirplace in our lives and in our pockets. But weare not that desperate, and as citizens ofStatesboro, we have many other options.

We must stop taking the easy-way-outby opting for Wal-Mart for each of our pur-chases. Through November, we have anamazing farmer’s market Downtown avail-able to us each and every Saturday from9am to 12:30pm. You can be purchasingfresh local fruits and vegetables while put-ting money in the hands of hard workingSouthern families. We even have aFarmer’s Market 2 Go where you can orderwhatever groceries you might need, andthey will be ready for pick up at MagnoliaBakery.

And clothing? We can’t all afford toinvest in high priced labels, but there is ahappy medium between Gucci and theWal-Mart apparel that won’t last you morethan two washes. Label Stalker is a localresale boutique that has lightly used namebrand clothing at fantastic prices. Shoppingthere instead of Wal-Mart will create lesswaste, and again, your money will be goingto support hard working small businessowners.

Being conscious buyers in this econo-my is necessary. We think we need theridiculously low prices Wal-Mart can offerus, but to what expense? By giving them allof your money, you are rejecting the smallbusinesses that make Statesboro what it is,and what it can be. Support local business-es, support local farmers, support localrestaurants, and last but not least, SUP-PORT LOCAL LIVE MUSIC!!

15DAYSTHE SCENE AROUND TOWN

TO-DO LISTFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30RHYTHM & BREWS

In only a matter of weeks, September will roll right intoOctober and our various hoodies, windbreakers, andscarves will all start making their debut appearances

on the coat rack once again. Pumpkins will be carved, sweater vests will be adorned, and Christmas lists willstart making their way to fridges everywhere. But, until that happens, we Statesboroites get to enjoysomething which I personally believe is heaven onearth: scorching heat during the day, and delicious, comforting, cool temperatures in the evening.

This is the time of year where once the heat of theday starts to pass, it is arguably stupid to not sit out-side and drink a nice cold beer with your friends.Georgia Southern’s Botanical Garden wants to see to itthat you make the most out of your weather-enjoying,beer-sipping abilities. On September 30th, they areholding a beer tasting with loads of live Rock & Roll, and Bar-B-Q from Big Bad Wolf BBQ.

The event is being held from 7 to 10pm at theBotanical Garden. I will be there in my brightest sun-dress, lounging under the prettiest tree, sipping on themost delicious beer… will you? Tickets are $40 throughSept. 25 and $50 after Sept. 25. All proceeds supportGeorgia Southern’s Botanical Garden.

How often do weget a chance to host a band that tours all over the country AND Europe? These guys are the real shit and they’re coming HERE. To stimulate yoursludge metal appetite here’s a quick Q & A between yours truly and AndrewFidler, the guitarist of Black Tusk. You’re welcome in advance.

I’m new in town, Have you played in Statesboro before? No, actually we’ve never played there before. We’ve played all over the coun-try, and even in Europe, but we’ve never played in Statesboro before. We fig-ured, we know our fans are traveling to come see us, so we should come see

you guys too. We’re not even in reg-ular touring dates right now, butStatesboro is so close to Savannahwe figured, hell yea, let’s go rock theplace.

I know I can’t be the only onewondering this: If you could havea super power while playing arock show, what would it be?Hmm, to never break a string duringa show. I think that would be prettybadass.

So, if you could do a single collab-oration track with anyone in theworld, who would it be?Lemmy. You know, from Motorhead.

I’ve never been to a Black Tuskshow before, or any metal show

for that matter. What should Iexpect? You should expect lots ofloud music and drunk sweaty peoplehave a good time together. Youshould wear earplugs. Yea, definitelywear earplugs!

Thanks Andrew, you can believe Iwill take your advice when RockFeast finally rolls around. And then, when we’re all in Dos Primoswrithing around in each other’ssweat and beer, at the most epicguitar solo ever, I will rip theearplugs out and throw them ontothe floor spectacularly! And, ofcourse, my soul will be acceptedinto metal heaven, which paradoxi-cally looks a lot like hell. I look for-ward to it. AMY MERRITT

September 3rd will mark a monumentalday in American political history. Thereare widespread reports that former

Alaska Governor and Vice-Presidential candi-date Sarah Palin will be announcing that shewill be running for President at a Tea Partyrally in Indianola, Iowa. (The original venue inWaukee had to be moved as it was thought tobe too small to hold the crowd expected for theannouncement.) Why is this so monumental?Because this will mark the first time in the his-tory of the United States that two women,Palin and Michelle Bachmann, will be con-tenders at the same time for a major party’snomination. The question will be this, howev-er: Will Palin's candidacy be one to be taken asa serious threat or will it become a circussideshow?

Unfortunately, Sarah Palin's quest for theVice-Presidency started off like a meteor onlyto come crashing down to earth after the KatieCouric interview. From that time on,Governor Palin was trounced upon by not onlythe media, but members of the Democrat Partyas well as members of her own party. In myopinion, Palin has handled things well.

Extremely well as a matter of fact. She's had totake the abuse from the media regarding herdaughter's out of wedlock child. (Though forsome reason, people of the media seem to for-get that Jesse Jackson fathered a child out ofwedlock. Jesse never took near the beating thatPalin did.) Classless comedians have jokedabout her baby with Down's Syndrome, show-ing absolutely no shame whatsoever. Again toher credit, she's handled these attacks with dig-nity. This has also given Palin's skin the tough-ness of an elephant. Palin, more than any othercandidate the GOP has, has been vetted andtaken apart by the other party and by the media.

I feel her biggest mistake, which most cer-tainly can be overcome, was when she resignedas Governor of Alaska. It's my opinion that itwould have served her better to complete herterm, but this wasn't my decision. I do feel thather reason for resigning was valid, however. Atthe time, Palin was involved in defending abogus ethics charges against her that not onlycost her $500,000 of personal funds, butenveloped her whole days making it impossibleto run Alaska. (The state has since adoptedlaws making it permissible for the state to incursome fees when a public official who is clearedof ethics violations.) She has to keep this infront of the public's eye as this will be the firstand most often asked questions by the press.

Palin's biggestasset is Sarah Palin.I can tell you fromfirst hand experi-ence that Sarah isthe rock star of theRepublican Party,as I attended one ofthe first rallies shewent to after sheand John McCainlost in 2008.Senator SaxbyChambliss wasinvolved in a runoffwith Jim Martinhere in Georgia. Itwas critical thatSaxby be reelectedas the SuperMajority of the U.S.Senate was at stakeand Palin was askedto come to Georgiaand help. Well let me tell you, that day at thePerry Fairgrounds rivaled any Beatles concertever held. It was pandemonium to say theleast, and I can tell you that the excitement surewasn't for Saxby, although he certainly was herbeneficiary. People like that she can relate tothem in a "downhome" way. I've met a lot ofpoliticians, former Presidents and sportsheroes and I can tell you that meeting SarahPalin was one of the most impressive.Although I didn't get a one-on-one discussionwith her (I was part of the rope line on the wayoff of the stage.), when I told her that I hadbeen her's and McCain's campaign manager in

Middle Georgia, she stopped sign-ing autographs, shook my handand gave me a sin-cere and genuinethank you. (Shesigned myNewsweek too...)The sincerity sheshowed can't befaked. I've seen alot of that, trustme. Jimmy Cartercomes to mind...

All in all I wouldsay that SarahPalin will be amedia sideshowfor exactly 30 min-utes: the 30 min-utes leading up toher announce-ment. After that,

she will move into the top tier of candidates, probably knocking out at least two lower tieredcandidates right off the bat, and become a veryserious threat for the nomination of the GOP.The only other candidate who can create thekind of excitement that will be surroundingSarah Palin would be Governor Chris Christieof New Jersey who still insists he is not run-ning, although I have not heard a categoricalShermanesque statement from him yet. Idon't think that the mainstream media shouldunderestimate the lady from Wasilla. ButSarah, keep the "You Betcha's" to a minimum ifyou want to stay at the top.

SARAH PALIN: SERIOUSTHREAT OR SIDESHOW?

SEEING RED

BILL KNOWLESActive member of theRepublican Party

I would say that Sarah Palin will be amedia sideshow for exactly 30 minutes:

the 30 minutes leading up to herannouncement. After that, she will move

into the top tier of candidates...
