Adopt Me

Back in December, it was 28 degrees, and thewind was blowing like crazy and I fell intothe Ocmulgee River wearing a pair ofwaders, which filled up with water. It wasfrightening, and it was cold, but I toughed itout anyway, like a duck hunter is supposed todo I guess. This weekend, as my entire fam-ily battled the crud, it was still exciting to seethat March sun come out and know thatwarmer climates are on their way and gettingin that big brown river will be easier andmore enjoyable, hopefully from now throughthe summer.

Cherry Blossom is here as well, and itjust won the Reader’s Choice Awards foryour favorite annual event, so make sure youget out and support this great festival. Mostof the events are free, all are family friendlyand just about all are a really good time.Hopefully, Spring is here, and I’m lookingforward to everything that comes with it.

Thanks to all of you who came out tothe Reader’s Choice Awards show Thursdaynight, and congratulations to all the winners. Thanks to Mr. Gary Ames who worked allweekend getting photos ready for us to get

into this issue. And to whoever that dude inthe American Flag G String was, Jesus man,put some clothes on.

Tinker Nantucket has been dream-ing of this for years. The truth ofthe matter is that the spirit ofvaudeville lives in her blood. She is aborn performer descended of bornperformers.

Her grandfather, Samuel Harry Brooks, sangand dance in vaudeville and burlesque halls as aside performer in the 1930’s and if Tinker is anyindicator of inherited talent, it must come onwith a vengeance!

Tinker is also known as Trichelle Hutton, amild mannered alter ego who runs the Perry BellyDance studio. She has been a dancer for over thir-ty years with an emphasis on the belly dancingdiscipline, which has taken her all over the worldin an endeavor to perfect the form and gain a morethorough understanding of her craft. But Trich gotbit by the burlesque bug and that took her on awhole new adventure as Tinker Nantucket.

In the last two or three years, TInker hasspent time getting to know burlesque intimately, which is after all the ideal way. In St. Louis shereceived private instruction from famous masterinstructor Lola Van Ella. What she learned is thatburlesque embraces a fantastic array of bodytypes and skill levels, and a range of acts equal-ly vast. Taking this understanding home to Perry,Tinker had an epiphany. Using the skills she hadlearned over the years, she too could create a bur-lesque variety show! She decided to make it herpersonal mission to bring the wit, sexiness andhilarious satire of the burlesque tradition to themidstate and the midstate has responded by giv-ing burlesque a warm welcome!

“Early on I thought, okay, we’ll do 5 or 6acts and that will be that. No biggie and it’ll befun! But now, it’s just turned into this gorgeousmonster of a show!”

After losing their first venue, Tinker wasoffered a new venue that was, in her words, prac-tically handed to her. The Bible Belt Burlesquelogo was done gratis. The support of local busi-nesses and enthusiasts has been a little overwhelm-ing to Tinker and if that wasn’t what was going todo the trick, the talent who has come on boardwould have. Trish Guinn, a comedian and MCfrom Ontario Improv in California but born out ofGeorgia immediately expressed interest in comingon board. She has performed her show, “The TrishGuinn Because I Said So Show” and has toured

and performed all over the U.S., on the TonightShow, Comedy Central, and the list goes on.

Filling out the billing in the best possibleway is the magnificent Talloolah Love, who isalso teaching a burlesque workshop through thePerry Belly Dance studio called “The TextbookTease” in which she will instruct beginners or thesimply curious on burlesque basics, costuming, and then finish off with a catered lunch with “thesweetest T in the South”.

Tinker says that she is fortunate that shedoesn’t have to draw the stark distinctionsbetween her life on the stage as TinkerNantucket, and her life as a loving wife, mother, and business owner Trichelle Hutton. Some ofthe girls have to sign morality clauses in theirjobs and so it is important that they keep theirstage presence and their private lives very sepa-rate. However, the experience of burlesque is areward in itself. The taboo surrounding thefemale form is slowly sloughing off and whatyou are finding is that each lady, in every shape,is her own diamond and diamonds are born tosparkle and shine.

Blatant objectivism is not what drives bur-lesque, as it has driven other forms of erotic per-formance. The theatrical roots of burlesque canactually be found in Shakespeare and Chaucer, all the way back to the Greek classics. It impliesparody in the theatrical sense and the comic silli-ness of its subject. In later traditions it was incor-porated into the variety show format andcabarets. The point was to include bawdy humorwith the female striptease and the most success-ful burlesque performers intertwine these ele-ments with grace and an acceptance of theabsurd. But burlesque has been known to be mis-understood. Tinker explained her anxieties aboutpitching her idea to HAA and introducing themidstate to Bible Belt Burlesque.

“I was so nervous! I didn’t know what toexpect because, you know, it is a bit racy and itdoes push the envelope a little bit. But burlesqueis also about fun and humor. It’s an old-fashionedtease and it’s so different than anything else. Itincorporates elements of theater and in that wayit defies age and what beauty is. During theiracts, our ladies get to own that stage, own theiraudience, and be empowered by the joy of theirbody. We have performers that range in age from27 to mid forties and as your body changes afterchildren and with time, sometimes you feel likea stranger in it. It’s hard to feel beautiful all thetime without an exhausting effort. Burlesque, inmy own experience has encouraged the accept-ance of my body. The ladies who perform; theyare doing this for themselves.

They are daring themselves to be bold. Tobe funny. Burlesque itself incorporates a lotof satire. It’s tongue in cheek, and it’s ourjob to wink!”

The performers, Lily Prawn, Lola(de)Luscious, Stony Blue, Reese, andCandy Cane Cleaver find support fromwhat at first glance would seem the unlike-liest of places.

“My husband is responsible for mystage name!” Tinker giggles. “He’s aYankee and when he was on a hockey teamthey were picking out new names for them-selves as sort of a lark. It was the name ofthe street they grew up on and the name oftheir first dog. So his dog was Tinker, andhe grew up on a road called Nantucket. Andwhat with all of the little jokes about theman from Nantucket, the name was perfectfor me! He is so supportive and I am reallylucky to have him encouraging me every

step of the way and I know it!”The ladies of Bible Belt Burlesque

have been practicing for this tightrope acttirelessly in the last several weeks andthough largely accepted, there have beenraised eyebrows here and there. It comeswith the territory, in most cases, and beingin the Bible Belt itself was a particular chal-lenge. It’s a challenge that the performers, their families, and their community has cho-sen to accept and gladly!

The variety show featuring TalloolahLove and the Ladies of Bible BeltBurlesque will be held on Saturday, March16th at the Cox Capitol Theatre. doors openat 8:30, showtime at 9:00. Last week marked a new day for the peo-ple in Bibb County, especially the teach-ers, faculty and administrators of the BibbCounty BOE since the Board, minusLester Miller, voted to buyout formerSuperintendent Romain Dallemand'scontract. Good bye and good rid-dance. But was it a "good buy" tosend him packing? A resoundingyes should be coming fromeveryone's lips this morning.

I certainly understand whyMiller voted against the buyout.Nobody actually wants to paythis bandit $350,000 and hishealth insurance until he getsanother job, but look at all of thepositives that come from this and yousee that they far outweigh the negative ofspending this money.

1.$350,000 is actually about $200,000when taxes bite him. Bibb County willget some of that back.

2. Even though we are stuck with hislegal fees, how many more lawsuits wouldhave popped up if he would have beenallowed to stay.

3. The most common complaint of this isto wait and see what Judge Ennis rules inBrad DeFore's suit trying to nulifyDallemand's contract. No matter what theresult of the suit, more money would beflushed down the toilet. If Ennis wouldhave ruled that the contract was void, wehave to keep him until June. How muchcarnage would he have created? THEN,Dallemand would have appealed the deci-sion..More legal costs. I don't even want tothink of what would have happened hadEnnis ruled that the contract was valid.Three more years of cufflinks and crabtinis.

4. The system has a 12 million dollardeficit right now. How much more wouldhave been added???

5. Now, the system can move on muchlike a battered spouse does after the end ofa bitter violent relationship. Bibb Countycan move forward and quit taking thegigantic steps backward that have beenmade over the last two years. NoReverand Terry...This is not a racial issueas you said last night after the meeting. Iwould be the biggest cheerleader in theworld of any person who will come inhere and do what is right for our kids, ourteachers and our administrators regardlessof race, color, creed, religion or sexinstead of coming in and treating my tax-dollars like their own personal slush fundwhile underperfoming in almost everycatagory especially in employee morale, which will scuttle any business or schoolsystem for that matter.

Again, I certainly understand BoardMember Lester Miller's vote against buy-ing him out. On the surface, payingDallemand one red cent is against every-thing I and many others have fought for a

long time. However, when we look backat this bleak period in the history of the

Bibb BOE, history willprove that this

buyout ist h e

best

thing thatcould have hap-

pened all the way around. At last night’s called board meeting

of the BOE, the Board appears to be mov-ing forward in a productive way as theyhave hired the Georgia School BoardsAssociation to conduct the search for thenew Superintendent. Thank God somesane voices have realized that spendingthousands more with PROACT producedabsolutely nothing. Further, a settlementhas been made in the above mentionedlawsuit brought on by Brad DeFore in theamount of $17.046.50 that will close thatchapter of the Dallemand Drama.

I was very dissapointed to see that theboard did put Suzanne Griffin-Zeibart inas the acting Superintendent for a periodof no more than 30 days. (People dohave to realize that this is NOT the inter-im posion of Superintendent that couldlast for a long time, however.) I am cer-tain there was a lot of political wailingand gnashing of teeth involved in thisdecision, which although I am dead setagainst it, was the right thing to do asshe is the next in line after Dallemand. There is no question our District cannotmove forward with one of Dallemand’scronies at the helm so I am reasonablycertain that a compromise will be foundthat will appease both factions on thecurrent Board.

In closing, many of you know that Ihave been very outspoken aboutDallemand since 2010 when I first intro-duced Macon to him with the article“The Strange Case of Dr. Dallemand andMr. Hyde” and feel and have felt fromeven before he had moved here that hewas going to be a trainwreck for ourkids, our school, our teachers, our facul-ty and staff, and our community.Unfortunately for everyone I was right. But it’s now time for us as a communityto get together and move forward as theBibb BOE will be selecting a new leaderfor our children. It’s my sincere hopethat the Board can get together andselect a person based on merit and expe-rience rather than on race or being con-troversial as they have in the past.

Tell us how you got into Music?David: The early days of MTV had a lot to

do with my obsession with music. I ditchedpiano lessons at the age of 13 and picked upa guitar. Since then I've become a huge musicfan. I love everything from country and bluegrass to rock and R&B. I enjoy makingmusic. I was hooked the first time I played apower cord on an electric guitar.

Ken: Music has been in my life as far back asi can remember. My parents had tons ofrecords to listen to. so i started listening andsoon found myself with #2 pencil's in myhands and beating on empty coffee cans.Been drumming ever since.

Who are your influences?Ken : Early on, Peter Buck of REM, played ahuge part in what I listened to. Then I heardthe Red Hot Chili Peppers cd "Mothers Milk"and it opened up another world. Then theearly 90's gave me alternative rock. And so

the process of listening to all styles ofmusic began. I just take all i hear andplay it the way it feels to me.

David: I think early on i was influenced byguitarists like Slash and Randy Rhodes.Later, I really got into bands like 311 andDrivin N' Cryin. Bands with big sound andgreat lyrics have always influenced me.

What does your music sound like? Far From Over's sound is a blend of modernrock and alternative styles. A lot of our origi-nal music is influenced by bands like TheSmashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction.Other bands like Weezer and Jimmy EatWorld had a part in shaping our sound also.

What's your best story on stage? There are so many that no one in particularcomes to mind, but it's always fun to see thereaction on people's faces when they realizethat they are listening to a two piece band.

How about the craziest after party story?Due to certain litigation we are unable todivulge any details, but it involved a bunchof beer, a couple of four wheel drives, and aWaffle House.

What's next for Far From Over? We're looking forward to a great summerplaying shows here in Macon and throughoutthe Southeast. A new full length cd is in theworks for later this year as well as new mer-chandise. Recently the band was ranked #2on reverbnation.com's most popular rockbands in the middle georgia area. Being apart of the Exposed Music Festival inMarietta, along with support from the HarleyDavidson Fight Cancer Rally in Atlanta, theband has become popular with a wide rangeof listeners.

With the Cherry Blossom Festival onlyday away, the attention of the city willturn towards the events that make up the10 day event and how nearly everythingbecomes pink during the month. If you'renot a fan of the festivities, there's still plen-ty of opportunities for you to get out andabout without having to sport the colors.

152 Productions, a booking groupbased in Douglasville, has continued tobring a steady stream of punk, hardcore, and the occasional indie rock show to the567 Center. On March 8th A PastUnknown, a metal-core group fromCedar Falls, Iowa, makes a stop in Maconthat should have the rafters of the oldThorpe Building shaking. They're joinedby a number of regional acts that have puton excellent shows there in the past. 152will be back in Macon on the 15th for avery special show with a band fromFlorida called Polyenso. The band sawgreat success in the past few years underthe name of Oceana, but due to a numberof matters changed up their approach tomusic - including a near 180 degreechange in the style of songs they werewriting. I've been looking forward to thisone and I urge you to give them a listento and see if it's something you could findyourself enjoying. Both of 152's showstake place at The 567 Center.

The Historic Grant's Lounge willbe hosting their 42nd anniversary onMarch 8th and will be celebrating exact-ly how you would expect; a reunion showfrom the famed Birnam Wood, VIPtables, and good vibes for all. The partywill kick off in the paved courtyardbehind the venue, before moving insidewhen the sun sets.

Holy Motors will be screened at theDouglass Theatre on March 10th as partof the Macon Film Guild's SecondSunday events. The Guardian declared itas "weird and wonderful, rich and strange– barking mad, in fact. It is wayward, kaleidoscopic, black comic and bizarre;there is in it a batsqueak of genius, dishevelment and derangement; it is cap-tivating and compelling. ... This is what

we have all come to Cannes for: forsomething different, experimental, a tilt-ing at windmills, a great big pole-vaultover the barrier of normality by someonewho feels that the possibilities of cinemahave not been exhausted by conventionalrealist drama." If you need more convinc-ing than that, it might not be the rightthing for you.

With that, we move onto CherryBlossom! 2013 marks the 31st anniver-sary of Macon's International CherryBlossom Festival. The origins of the fes-tival date back to the early 1950's, whenWilliam Fickling Sr. discovered aYoshino Cherry growing in his yard anddeveloped a love for the bright pink blos-soms. Years went by, and Mr. Ficklingeventually met Carolyn Crayton, a trans-plant to Macon who spearheaded theKeep Macon-Bibb BeautifulCommission, and they begin developingwhat would become the first CherryBlossom Festival. Then, in 1982, the firstfestival was held based around the found-ing principals of "love, beauty, and inter-national friendship." In the years to come,Cherry Blossom Festival would see dra-matic growth, ultimately receiving theaccolades of being a Top 20 Event in theSouth, Top 50 Event in the United States, and Top 100 Event in North America. The 2013 festival occurs from March15th - March 24th throughout the city andif you've been in Macon during Marchbefore, you know what to expect from thePinkest Party on Earth!

Things kick off with one of thelongest running traditions in the festival -the Gala. This year, the Gala featuresfamed beach-band The Swingin'Medallions, famous for their hits "DoubleShot of My Baby's Love", "Hey, HeyBaby" and many more. Following aFrench theme (the City of Macon has vis-iting dignitaries from Mâcon, France dur-ing the week of the festival), the Gala isan exciting start to the ten days havebecome Middle Georgia's largest touristattraction. The Gala is open to the publicand tickets cost $62.50

Saturday the 16th is filled with aparticularly large number of events, including a few that are new to the area.Downtown activities kick off on CherryStreet around 11:00am and continuethroughout the day with the Bed Race, the High Heel Race, the Fire Fighter'sGames and more - all of these are free tothe public to watch. I'm thrilled to see aMud Run taking place during the festivalthis year. The race, which is fairly selfexplanatory, will take place at theHephzibah Children's Home early thatmorning and will run until around4:00pm that evening. If you're interestedin entering, visit MaconMudRun.com. Ican't wait to see those photos..

That evening, join the huge crowdsthat assemble at Middle Georgia StateCollege's Macon Campus for the Tunes& Balloons Festival. This year, localfavorites Travis Denning Band will pro-vide entertainment along with a specialperformance by HeyKid!, a fun-filledgroup of performers that will have yourlittle ones dancing till bed time. Over adozen hot air balloons will take over themain fields at the campus and as the sunsets, the sky will be filled with giant, glowing shapes! The best part about thewhole event is that admission is only$5.00 and for a few extra bucks, you cantake a tethered ride in one of the balloons.Make sure to bring a camera if you makeit out to this event!

Cherry Blossom Festival is perfectfor anyone that's on a budget, but stillwants to share in the fun; nearly 90% ofthe events that take place over the 10 daysare free admission. Central City Park, thehub of the festival, is completely free tothe public and features daily entertain-ment, ticketed rides, and dozens of food, arts, and crafts vendors. Whether youbring any cash along is up to you, buteither way, you'll have a great time.

All that in the first weekend! Thefull schedule of events for the festival canbe viewed at CherryBlossom.com, or bypicking up one of the brochures at theSouvenir Shop at 652 Mulberry St.

30 FEBRUARY 22 - MARCH 8, 2013

In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Clevelandhad struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, JasonHoward. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who

had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following hisarrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could berehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband,Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands,Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the familypets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaverdogs, Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Clevelandwrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later con-firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beatenfirst. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained:

Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I willnot only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered,so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame.

For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he con-structed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured onAmerica’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Policefound him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross countryrunner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is apage of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
