Ican’t say that I haven’t watched theHowie Handsel/Irving Martinezcampaign for Senate with interest. I
can’t say that I have either. It would belike admitting to watching an endan-gered species explode, or googling albi-no porn. Howie’s sweaty mess cameinto my life, I believe, about two yearsago. He was a Godfather or something. He said he was going to change thenightlife in Macon. He was a formerreporter for Fox News. He was rich, andhad a youtube channel that had millionsof viewers. (You should check that out)It took me about ten seconds to realizethat he was not someone I wanted tospend a great deal of time talking to, andI used top secret evasion techniques tokeep him out of our office, and off ofour phone lines. It was not an easy task. Then, like a husky plume of smoke, hedisappeared. I never wondered wherehe’d gone, not once.
So when I met Irving Martinez, hehad that same effect. Though not asaggressive as The Howitzer, he tried toramble on to me for 45 minutes, while Idazed in and out of consciousness, reminding myself to wear disguises onCherry Street, to always double backand check the backseat. But downtown
is full of characters I kept remindingmyself, and that’s kind of cool. Then Isaw his Terrell Sandefur produced Elfon a Shelf campaign, and saw him castin a Macon Reel finalist film. Then hewas on Fox 24 running David Cousino’scampaign. Things were getting weird Ithought, or maybe I was just beingweird, and everyone saw something Idid not. Then Irving was arrested, thenHowie came back into town, thenHowie announced that he was going tobe running Martinez’s campaign forSenate. Then Howie got arrested anddropped out of the campaign. ThenHowie announced he was running forSenate himself. Then Howie got arrest-ed, again. Then he got arrested again thesame day. Then his famous “I’ll tell youeverything at the IHOP on Tom Hill”video was posted of him getting out ofjail. It’s a spectacle only worthy ofDowntown Macon, and I really doubtanyone outside of it is even aware it’sgoing on. It’s not worthy of even athought when we’re regarding theSenate Race for District 26. But if youare looking for some laughs, and if youlike laughing at train wrecks, Googlethese guys and see what some folks arepaying attention to.

MAY 5TH
But when we need police or fire pro-tection, we want an immediateresponse and we usually get it. Our
fire department is one of the few ClassOne rated forces in the nation a factwhich saves money for all of us on ourhomeowners insurance. That is the envi-ronment of expectation in which ourpolice and fire officers work every day.
When my late father retired, he receivedboth a monthly social security check and amonthly pension check, and, after his death,my mother continued receiving his pensionpayments the rest of her life. Our retiredpolice and fire officers, however, do notreceive social security payments unless theyworked a second job which qualified themfor that benefit. That is because Macon spolice and fire pension fund is a social secu-rity replacement plan. And, after working for30 or 40 years in a highly stressful job, howmuch money do those retirees receive?
The plan now has 679 active officersstill working plus 200 who have resignedbut are partially vested in the system. There are 298 service retirees who receiveeach month an average of $2,099 (remem-ber that this figure is NOT in addition to asocial security check). There are 34 dis-ability retirees who receive an average of$1,313 per month. Finally, there are 89beneficiaries (usually widows) whoreceive $753 per month. During the pasttwo years, those retirees who still relyupon the City s health insurance were hitwith a 50% increase in their premiums.
Our plan is a hands-off one whichmeans that the City contributes to it but isnot supposed to have any part in directinghow it operates. Unfortunately, that is notthe case. Additionally, the City underfund-ed its financial obligation for 1.5 yearsresulting in a shortage of more than fourmillion dollars. The Mayor responded byplacing an IOU in the fund and it is beingpaid in installments. Finally, the fund hasperformed at almost 2 Ω% below its actu-arial rate of return over the past ten years.
No one claims the fund is not currentlysolid and our retirees are not in immediatedanger, it is the longer term financialhealth that is in question.
Months ago the pension board was toldthere are changes to its charter required bythe I.R.S. That is certainly a reasonableexpectation and one the GeneralEmployees Pension board has alreadyeffected. However, some of the changeshave been questioned not only by theretirees but by their independent attorney.
When a vote came before the pensionboard to approve the changes, three mem-bers voted against while only two CityCouncil members Schlesinger and Jonesvoted in favor of moving ahead. The oth-ers wanted to wait until their questionscould be answered by the expert attorneywho specializes in pension law. Withindays the issue came to the full Council andwe were assured the entire matter must becompleted within 90 days.
That evening I moved to send the issueback to the Employment DevelopmentCommittee so they could bring the pensionlaw expert down, at our cost and not to thepension board, to answer any questionsand explain the changes in full. If these arenon-substantive changes then there is noreason for concern. The 90 day deadlinecould still easily be met. Schlesinger andJones were joined by five other Councilmembers in voting against my motion butit passed 8-7.
Within days the administration contend-ed that Lynn Wood, who is a citizen mem-ber of the pension board, should be disqual-ified because he lives in Bibb County butnot in Macon. The board voted in 2003 todelete the requirement to live in the city andonly require residence in Bibb County.Although Council never approved thatchange, several citizen members haveserved since that time who do not live in theCity, while the City itself has ignored ourcharter requirement that our ChiefAdministrative Officer live within the city(the past two have not). When numerousvocal retirees turned up for a public meet-ing, suddenly the requirement that we makethe charter changes within 90 days disap-peared and we are now being told we canextend that elastic deadline until October!
So here s what we need to do. Schedulea convenient day and time when all ourpolice and fire retirees, as well as currentofficers, can assemble at City Hall. Ask thepension law expert to come down to Maconat City expense and stay as long as it takes.Answer every question. Rebut or confirmthe objections raised by an attorney hiredby the retirees. Do all this on the record in atelevised meeting attended by full Council. If there is nothing to hide, then dispel thequestions. If there are legitimate objections, make those changes to the proposed charteramendments. I’ve spoken with the City’sCAO who agrees with me that our retireesdeserve nothing less.

Most of us have been slightly inconvenienced when our garbage or yarddebris isn’t picked up when we expect, or have driven around a potholebecause the City hasn’t gotten around to fixing it (or had the funds to doso). It’s annoying although usually not critical.

MUSIC SITE - DAYTROTTER.COMThe guy who keeps me awash in good music, John Fleming, got mehooked on Daytrotter this week. Basically, a group of kids in sometown near B.F. Illinois started a studio/website and got touring bandsto take a couple of hours out of their day to stop by and record fourto five songs live, as they are heard on that day. There is no overdub-bing or reworking of vocals. It’s a good opportunity to really listen tothe bands you love, and to discover bands that you will grow to love, and it’s a great opportunity for the bands as well. Smaller bandsmight not get an opportunity to play to an audience as large asDaytrotters during all their shows combined, on a particular tour. Butsince it’s inception, bigger bands have been stopping by to, either totest out new stuff, or just keep in touch with their fans. Check it outif you haven’t already. There’s a new posting from the Avett Brothersthat is really raw and great. One of a kind sessions from today’s bestemerging bands for only $2 a month!
THE DOG WASH AT THE CAR WASHWe have four dogs at our house. One three-legged bulldog with some sort of skindisease, one 15 year old beat up Papillion mix that we’re pretty sure lives inside ourwalls because we never see her, a Jack Russell named Dr. Pickle, and a 15 year oldGerman Shepherd/Husky Mix, who was found on Riverside Drive over seven yearsago (Bandit, pictured above). We’ve cured him of heartworms when we got him, hegot shot on someone’s farm in Twiggs County and we nursed him back to health. Hehad knee replacement and survived a snakebite, and recently his knee replacementfailed, and because he’s too old and fat for amputation, he also walks on three legs.Needless to say, when it’s time to give these gremlins a bath, it’s a nightmare, because they get all special forces on us and collaborate, hide, and gnaw their wayout of it. I just found the cure. The Car Wash on Forest Hill by Rivalries, installed aDog Wash. You can take your dog to a fenced- in enclosure, walk them into a tub anduse the nozzle for shampoo, flea and tick spray and a hair dryer that I can’t believe mydogs actually love. It’s $10 and worth every penny.
JERK FISH TACO FRIDAYS AT BARBERITOSI’m not sure if you’ve been toBarbaritos on Riverside across fromthe Shoppes at River Crossing, butit is incredible. Jerk Fish TacoFridays is my favorite day, andthose things may be some of thefinest food I’ve put in my mouth, maybe ever. Seriously, great flavor, fresh toppings, it beats the socksoff any fish taco I’ve ever had. Goget you one immediately. I got mine loadedwith extra cilantro, lime juice and guacamole, andthe freshly prepared fish just melted in my mouth. $3.75 for one, bigenough to be filling for a girl, I ordered three and couldn’t finish.

While these various mergers mean poten-tial complications that I myself do notfully understand, there is an equal, if notgreater potential for successes that willcontinue to prove themselves years fromnow. I have always been a firm believerin “strength in numbers” but that beingsaid, those “numbers” must make a uni-fied, cautious and concise approach totheir work, especially in cases such asthose at hand; the proposed City ofMacon-Bibb County merger, HoustonCounty’s potential “Tri-City” merger, andthe conjoining of Macon State Collegeand Middle Georgia College.
I have been interested in Macon-Bibband MSC-MGC unification since I firstheard they were being discussed, but thepolitics of our local governments are
slightly confusing to say the least, and soI found myself spending more timeresearching and discussing the latter ofthe two. For me, a civil and objectivepolitically oriented conversation seemsfar and few around these parts (thoughthat may be because as enlightening asthey seem, discussions that are birthedfrom late nights on porches or at barsvery rarely lead to a beneficial conclu-sion) and so I chose to educate myselfabout the merging of the two schools andhow our region would be affected. I obvi-ously realized that the merger encom-passed much more than just a new name, logo, mascot etc. and therefore, while Iwould continue to stay informed of theconsolidation, I wanted to narrow downmy approach to the subject and thus the
skeleton for this article began to takeshape. After discussing ideas with friendsand family, I settled on the task ofanswering one single question in anempirical, informative and approachablemethod: How will the Macon State-Middle Georgia College consolidationfirmly establish the school as one with areputable and progressive fine arts pro-gram that assists and educates theirmajors to think globally and act locally? The specific nature of that question didnot initially come to me. I debated writingabout the economic effect of the consoli-dation or what procedures would have tobe enacted to make a smooth transitiononce a name and logo are selected (It isexpected that a new name will be selectedby May 8th and information will beupdated on the Board of Regents web-site), but I ultimately decided to featurethe arts program after a discussion withlocal painter and Macon State instructorEric O’Dell.
I met Eric a little over two years agowhen I was first employed with theMuseum of Arts and Sciences as a gener-al assistant. As my first “real” job, I wasassigned to the front desk but quicklyfound myself working with him and theexhibits crew and thus my relationshipwith the Middle Georgia arts communitybegan to take form. I slowly began tolearn the ins and outs of the differentgroups or artists in the area and their his-tories with this area and have beenintrigued ever since, so the subject of howthe consolidation would strengthen the artprogram at the new school was fitting. After a few phone calls were made, Ifound myself hunkered down in O’Dell’sDowntown studio space at the MaconArts Exchange with none other thanMacon State’s current Assistant Professorof Art Charles Ward, Craig Burkhalter,Adjunct Instructor of Art, and O’Dell, who along with Burkhalter, is a contract-ed instructor in the art program.
The combined educational back-ground of the three men immediatelyimpressed me. Ward, a born and bredMaconite, received his B.A. with a con-centration on Drawing from PiedmontCollege before moving on to obtain hisMaster of Arts in Teaching from GCSUand his Master of Fine Arts in Fine Artfrom Western Carolina. Burkhalter, aMaconite as well, received his Bachelorof Science in Education and Art beforecompleting his MFA at Georgia Southernand O’Dell, the only Macon-transplant,moved here from Florida to complete hisB.A. at Mercer University and then on toFlorida State for his MFA. I was definite-ly talking to the right crowd. “Each of ushas our own reasons for returning toMacon, whether for family or work, but Ithink we all came to the conclusion afterwe settled that we wanted to work togeth-er with the artists we did know to create a
community that was organic, yet eventu-ally self-sustaining”, said Burkhalter. “Iremember coming back to Macon afterleaving Statesboro and in a way it almostfelt like this was some rogue activity. Youdidn’t find studios above shopsDowntown and what galleries were openwere selling portraits or landscapes, sowhen we were painting it was either byourselves or with small groups”.
Things began to look up for Maconwhen local developer Tony Long Sr. pur-chased the building at the corner ofMulberry and Second that now houses theMacon Arts Exchange. “Tony and hiswife have been an integral part of nurtur-ing and promoting the art communityhere. He provided us with a spacious,low-rent, low-maintenance facility whereartists could put their attention entirely intheir work and has supported us from dayone”, said Burkhalter, who has been amember at the Exchange the longest. Thespace, which sits above Michael’s, housesapproximately 18 studio spaces that havebeen predominately occupied since theywere made available. “I remember when Ifirst moved back to Macon, I was livingabove [what is now] the Greek CornerDeli. I had my studio space set up aroundour entire apartment and Greta eventuallyhad enough. One way or another, I caughtwind that there was a group of people thathad studios so I hung out around the doorfor a while each day until I met Craig andthings just seemed to work out fromthere”, said O’Dell.
The art scene in Macon began tobuild steam during the Nineties with theemergence of other galleries, studios andcollectives but both O’Dell andBurkhalter felt that the artists that theydid know that were graduating from thelocal schools were immediately leavingtown because they felt there wasn’t any-thing in Macon for them. “Wesleyan andMercer have always had strong art pro-grams but those students who were com-pleting them would nearly always leaveMacon and not look back. I nearly didthat myself. If you wanted to pursue alegitimate art degree, those seemed to beyour only options.” said O’Dell.
Years later, things are starting tolook a lot different. Macon State’senrollment has been on a steady
rise and there are more art majors thanever before. “When I began working atMacon State we had 35 students pursuingtheir art degree in addition to 8 to 10 whowere pursuing art as a second degree. Ican only predict that number to rise as webegin to implement the new curriculum”,said Ward who had been tasked with theduty of completely re-writing the art pro-gram curriculum prior to official discus-sion of the consolidation. “I’m personallyvery excited about the future of our new

HOW THE MACON STATE - MIDDLE GEORGIACOLLEGE MERGER WILL AFFECT THE ARTS
Consolidating Colors
I’m going to say this with a hopeful confidence, but I would like tothink that if at the end of the year, the Middle Georgia communitieswere to choose a word that will sum up 2012, it would be very likelythat “consolidation” would take the cake. In a manner only befittingof our locale, a long overdue sense of unity is beginning to spreadfrom the depths of Downtown into the county and furthermore, intothe surrounding counties.

college program. Over the past few yearsthe school seen a surge in the number ofstudents that are interested in pursuing adegree in art”, Ward said.
When I got around to asking thethree of them my focal question, theywere quick to provide answers. I wantedto gauge each of their responses on theirbackgrounds, affiliation with the schooland local community and their personali-ties but their responses had little varia-tion. “We have a vision, one that I whole-heartedly think that Macon State sup-ports, to craft an art program that is asaccessible and approachable to someonewith a new-found curiosity as it is to along term student with plans to pursuemultiple art degrees”, explained Ward, when I asked him what the basis of hisplan for the next few years is. When Isuggested that the school’s art programhad lacked in years past because studentswere not approached with a curriculumthat seemed entertaining and educating, they agreed “We have students coming innow that are not only eager to work, butthey are teaching themselves and devel-oping a technique that is their own. Thatwas one of the first major signs that wewere doing our jobs”, elaborated O’Dell. Macon seems to be cursed with the factthat what talent we have, we routinelyneglect to nurture. Up until more recentyears, whether with music, art or com-merce, individuals had to seek work andcommune elsewhere. Savannah andAtlanta have always been the top con-tenders, but cities like Columbus,Milledgeville and Carrolton have seentheir art scene flourish with the restruc-turing of fine arts curriculum at theirrespective colleges and universities. That’s not to say that Macon hasn’t start-ed to get itself into shape. “With the for-mation of groups like the Arts Exchangeand the various galleries in the Inglesidearea, Macon’s community has started to
take care of itself. At the very minimum,we want to expose our students to thelocal outlets that they have and encour-age them to pursue their own options”,said Burkhalter. When I reached out tosome of the students in the various artclasses at Macon State, their responseonly solidified what I had spoken to theirinstructors about.
When I reached out to some of thestudents in the various art classes atMacon State, their responses only solidi-fied what I had spoken to their instructorsabout. Sierra Smith, a 23 year old whohas been focusing on painting, expressedhow much the program has meant to her.“I come from a family that has alwaysencouraged being artistic, but only as ahobby. I started taking classes here in2008 but in order to keep up with bills,I’ve had to take one semester and thentake a break and so forth. After beingintroduced to the art classes, I completelymotivated myself to finish with mydegree because I’ve found a subject thatnot only makes me happy, but one that Itruly feel like I’m learning from”. Sierrawas a prime example of the numerousstudents from around the area that arebeing exposed to the arts at Macon State. The majorities of the students that I spokewith began taking art classes as extra-cur-ricular credits and have since decided topursue a degree. “I think this program hasmade some awesome changes since I’ve
been at Macon State. The friends I havethat used to sleep through or skip their artclasses and now they’re staying late in thestudio and I’m actually impressed withwhat they’re doing”, said another student,a senior, who has friends in the arts pro-gram and who attended the school’s firststudent exhibition in years. The 567Center for Renewal, a large events andgallery space in Downtown hosted theshow this past December and had a hugeturnout throughout the month. “For mostof these students, it was unlike anythingthey’d been a part of before. The fact thatpeople showed up to see the work they’ddone over the past semester was a big eyeopener”, said Ward.
Ibegan to make the conclusion of myinterview by asking the group ofinstructors how they felt that the con-
solidation would most directly and dra-matically affect the community. “I thinkwhat we all would love to see is anincreased presence of the school’s arts, both student and faculty, around the city.Predominately in the Downtown areaswould be my preference”, said O’Dell.“We’re beginning to develop a bold andbright culture in the area and I’ve gotfaith that this program will endow theinspiration in students to want to be a partof that”. “I want the school to have an artprogram that is known statewide, if not
nationally, for having educated and talent-ed instructors, students who are eager tolearn and experiment in developing atechnique, and for having a loyal supportfrom the surrounding community. Yes, it’sambitious but we’re finally at the pointwhere there is a mutual drive between thestudents and instructors to succeed and Ithink in five year’s we can have a depart-ment that can compete with any in thestate”, remarked Ward. Burkhalter fol-lowed by adding, “We have practically allthe things we need to make this happen. These kids are as excited about the futureas we are”.
In the past year, Macon State artmajors have formed a Fine Arts StudentAssociation that recently held the firstjudged art competition in the programshistory. According to both students andinstructors alike, classes are full eachweek and grades are up. Students havepursued having their art show at variouscoffee shops, tobacco shops, restaurantsand bars and some have even settled intooff campus studios where they can workin their spare time. “This is going to be agood thing for not only the Macon State& Middle Georgia College family, butfor our region as a whole. I’m lookingforward to how the new program willoperate and have high hopes that we canbegin to work hand in hand with Mercerand Wesleyan, as well as with galleriesaround the city to expose these talentedstudents. We have a dedicated and pro-gressive faculty and we’re going to makesure this is a success”, remarked Ward.“I, as well as Eric, Craig, our depart-ments at Macon State and MiddleGeorgia and most importantly our stu-dents, have faith in this program. We’reanticipating nothing but the best to comefrom working with Charlie [Agnew, theAssociate Professor of Art at MGC] andhis entire team to bring this new pro-gram up to full speed.
“This is going to be a good thing for not only the MaconState & Middle Georgia College family, but for our
region as a whole. I’m looking forward to how the newprogram will operate and have high hopes that we canbegin to work hand in hand with Mercer and Wesleyan,as well as with galleries around the city to expose thesetalented students. We have a dedicated and progressivefaculty and we’re going to make sure this is a success,”
remarked Ward.

MYFAVORITE
THINGSwith
DJ Roger Riddle
Records - Been collecting for years. Have over 3000pieces (last time I counted). I used to drag this crate tomy gigs but now I am digital. The records are only forhome now. The crate was given to me by Jason Virus.
Girl Scout Cookies - I LOVE cookies. LOOOOOOOVEthem. I pitched a fit on Facebook about how no girlscouts came to see me this year. Two troops came byThe Rookery to find me. You can't say no. I ended upwith a case of cookies. They're good and it's for a funcause!
Death Star Cookie Jar- I date the woman behind thecooking and crafts blog "Suck It Martha" (suckit-martha.wordpress.com). She's always baking goodiesand she knows I love Star Wars and cookies. She gaveme this as a birthday present.
Hot Wheels - I love cars. I was born and raised inDetroit. I can't help myself sometimes, if I see a classiccar Hot Wheel I buy it. Kroger keeps them in a dollar bin. It's hard not to impulse shop.
Technics SL1210M5G - This is the top of the line in DJturntables. The one above this one is gold plated. ThatRed Bull slip mat was given to me by DJ Shawty Slimwhen he came back from SXSW.
Gundam Robot Model - That's not a Transformer. That's a Japanese model robot called Heavy Arms. Ibuilt and painted it. It's one of my hobbies. Chris Horneused to think that exposing this hobby would make peo-ple think I wasn't cool. I think it just showed that I havedifferent sides.
70s Lamp - Scott Baston of St. Francis gave me thatlamp one summer when we worked together doing land-scaping. Now it's the first thing you see when you walkin my house.
Rare Beer Bottles - Sometimes a beer is so good thateven the bottle it comes in is a piece of art. You have tokeep it as a reminder of how good it was. My favorite isthe Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" bottle from DogfishHead.
Leon Russell Bobble Head - When Leon Russell cameto town I wasn't going to dare miss him. I had been lis-tening to his records for years. I went to the merch tableand there was a Leon Russell bobble head. They onlyhad a handful. I bought it. I had to! I think I rememberhearing Saralyn got one as well.
Buddy Christ - If you know what this is and where itcame from, you're cool with me.
Old Fashioned Beer Can Opener - Before the days oftabs and pull rings, how did you open your beer cans? You stuck it in one of these things and slammed the topdown on it.
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel - At some point you growup. You can't drink cheap liquor and beer all the time. You want and deserve something good. I bought a bottleof this for a friend as a gift and then went to TheHummingbird with it in my backpack. The friend never
showed up and I forgot my bag at The Bird. When I real-ized it was gone it was a week later. Tim Obelgonerfound my bag and the staff had a ball with my high endwhiskey. But Tim is a great guy. When he found out itwas mine he bought me another bottle.
Yard Glass - Now that's how you enjoy beer! That glasswas given to me by Aaron and Amanda Irons.
Bow Ties - As a kid I was fascinated by bow ties. Noone wore them so when you saw one it was like,WOOOOOOOOOOW! Now I have this big ol' beard, Igotta dress nice so people don't think I'm going to robthem. I rock the bow tie. My favorite is the one withskulls and crossbones on it.
Concert DVDs - I have a bunch. Here I have TeddyPendergrass (1979), Parliament/ Funkadelic (1976), NinaSimone Live at Montreux (1976), and Wu-Tang Clan Liveat Montreux (2007). There is a great moment in the NinaSimone concert where she is playing the piano andsinging and then she stops and points in the crowd andsays "You girl sit down! SIT! DOWN!" and then goesback to playing.
Brooklyn Brewery Beer Key - Tools of the trade. Gottaget those bottles open. This key came direct from thebrewery.
New Balance Sneakers - Crazy combination of colorsright? Chad Evans (The Rookery, Hank Vegas) gave methese. He's colorblind.
Run-DMC/Beastie Boys Original Concert Poster -This poster claims to be for Philly's first all rap concert atThe Spectrum in 1986. Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys,Whodini and LL Cool J. This great piece was given tome by Jessica Walden.
Sesame Street Shopping Bags -It ain't easy being green but if I'mgon be green I'm gon be stylish.
My Rookery Jerseys - Everyonewants one of these. Mine all sayRiddle with double zeros on theback. Double zero is the mostpopular number ordered byguests. It's like being in the NFLand the fans want your jersey!
Obey Giant Poster- Yeah that's anObey hiding in thebackground. Yep,it's signed byShepard Fairey.

THE CITY SCENE
Yesterday may have marked a very crucialturning point for the Bibb County Boardof Education with the visit of Georgia
Assistant Attorney General Stefan Ritter, as thebig boys in Atlanta are starting to pay attentionto the ridiculousness called the Bibb CountyBoard of Education. Contrary to what District 5Board Member Tom Hudson said when heintroduced Mr. Ritter, Mr. Ritter's presence waswelcomed by the administration of the BOEmuch like a policeman is welcomed at a drugdeal. In his opening remarks. Hudson tried toset the tone of the meeting by saying that Mr.Ritter's appearance in Macon was by the admin-istration's request , “quite contrary to what mayhave been said in the media.” In the eloquentword of Board President TommyBarnes...."Bullshit!" (Yep....Barnes was so frus-trated that someone dare question Dr.Dallemand's decision to go to Belgium at thelast board meeting he apparently thought he wasat a manure sale.)
I want to set the record straight and makethis crystal clear: Stefan Ritter's meeting yester-day explaining the Open Records Act was a shotacross the bow of a ship that is about to beattacked and boarded. This was an educationalmeeting for the administration of the BibbCounty Board of Education that just didn't hap-pen. Ritter told the Telegraph yesterday, “Afterhearing a series of complaints, we decided theeasiest way to address” Read carefullygang....."WE DECIDED"...Not the Board....NotThe Administration....Not Dr. Dallemand....But"WE decided", as in Attorney General SamOlens department. I was sitting very close to thefront of the presentation, and I can tell you thatEVERY single time Mr. Ritter spoke about finesand penalties, he turned his back to the crowdand looked directly at Dr. Dallemand. If PapaDoc didn't get the message that Big Brother iswatching he's living in Never Never Land.
As you know, I have sent numerousrequests to Randy Howard, the BOE attorney. To his credit, he has been responsive to me inmost cases, but I had also contacted Mr. Ritterback in March and the AG's office acted as amediator for me already. This is not the casewith most of the requests. I know for a fact ofone request that went completely unansweredfrom last October. The Telegraph has beenstonewalled many times and complained to theAG's office. WMAZ is reporting that they toohave had requests that were returned incom-plete or unanswered. I think that the localmedia has finally gotten fed up with the acts ofour Superintendent's dictatorial ways. TomHudson didn't help matters yesterday as he basi-cally called The Telegraph liars. BarristerHoward didn't help much either as he claimedthat WMAZ's request for travel documents forDallemand were an 'invasion of privacy.'
In the past I have referred to Dr.Dallemand as Papa Doc, just as many in the
Bibb County School System do, the people ofRochester did before us and probably the citi-zens of Hartford prior to Rochester. In thepast I did it with tongue firmly planted in mycheek. I can't say that now as the similaritiesbetween Dr. Dallemand and the late formerPresident of Haiti François Duvalier arebecoming more real every day. As I reportedin The 11th Hour last time, Dallemand has a"Let them eat cake" attitude that every 'good'dictator has. He rules his kingdom by intimi-dation and surrounds himself with toadieslooking for his favor. His subjects, the educa-tors, are afraid to openly disagree with him infear of termination. The similarity that is moststartling to me hasn't actually happened yet,but is coming very quickly and that is the phe-nomenon known as "brain drain".
Brain drain occurred in Haiti afterDuvalier took power, and is defined as "thedeparture of educated or professional peoplefrom one country, economic sector, or field foranother usually for better pay or living condi-tions". There is no better definition of what willbe happening in the Bibb County SchoolSystem as a result of The Macon Miracle and ofDr. Dallemand. The only hope that our childrenhave to get a good education and a return to nor-malcy will be a coup d'etat at the ballot box thisyear as all of the board members except for thetwo At-Large posts currently held by LynnFarmer and Wanda West in hopes that a newboard that would be comprised of a majority ofsanity would prevail instead of the five individu-als who are rubber stamping the DallemandDynasty of Destruction.

May is already shaping up to be what feels like the busiest month of the yeararound town. I sat down last week and tried to make a full calendar of all thebands playing and I’m still not exactly sure how I’m going to make all of the
shows I want to see, so I’ll at least let you know and maybe you’ll find them entertain-ing. When I look back on what our city’s live music scene (I think we can actually startto claim one now) was three to four years ago, a tremendous amount has changed.Macon Venue Project was holding all-ages shows underneath the pavilion at Starcadia(anyone remember that?) and aside from the Capitol Theatre, there wasn’t really any-where in town for the 18-under crowd to see bands. Fast forward and we’ve got at leastfive venues around town that cater to all-ages audiences and the number of 18-up ven-ues has increased too. On just about any night of the week you can find live music, whether an open mic night, a DJ, or a full band and there’s been little sign that thingswill slow down. There is some amazing local talent that I’m very proud represents ourcommunity (Travis Denning, Xavii, sunDollars etc..) so please, please get out andcheck them out. By no means do you have to champion everything local, but there areplenty of people in this city that deserve support they are not getting.
The Cox Capitol Theatre has been fairly successful at bringing some nationallyknown touring acts through Macon in the past year. Lucinda Williams, Grace Potter& The Nocturnals, Travis Tritt, Mothers Finest, and now the extremely talentedKeller Williams (not the realtor). Keller has performed all around the world and hasco-headlined some of the largest festivals on the jam-band circuit. He’ll be rolling intothe Cox this Friday the 4th for what is certain to be a good time. If that’s not up youralley, remember it is First Friday so whether you head over to Al King’s AlbumRelease Birthday Celebration/Mary Ann Bate’s Photo Show/Kolby’s Celebrationat Roasted (yes, all that in one night) or head to the one of the many galleriesDowntown for openings. There’s live music throughout the entire city and best of all,Club Powerstation is holding a “School’s Out Sexy School Girl Party”, so if you’veever wanted to see Brad Evans in a plaid skirt and a smedium top, this could be yourlast chance. Don’t over indulge too much as Cinco de Mayo brings what may be themost jam-packed, fun filled day of the year so far.
I like to begin my Cinco de Mayo with a long standing family tradition called the“Freedom Run”. All it really entails is filling a camel-bak with Pepe Lopez and runningthe Corridor. If that doesn’t suit you, then you can check out In-Town Macon’s party onColeman Hill featuring Sterling Waite & The Cotton Ave Hustlers and then head overto Mercer Village for their inaugural Cinco de Mayo Street Party. The streets will beclosed from 10am-11pm that day and with activities for kids and adults, as well as give-aways and a full line-up of great bands to wind up the night. Athens’ favorites ModernSkirts are set to headline and will be supported by Wowser Bowser, an Atlanta-basedgroup who has drawn comparisons to Reptar, Of Montreal, and Clap Your Hands SayYeah, as well as Macon’s own sunDollars and one of Mercer University’s bands, WhoaBro!. All of this is 100% FREE and music kicks off around 5:30pm.
If going out and drinking and listening to bands doesn’t sound appealing, theTEDx conference will be taking place at the Cox Capitol Theatre. Originally startedin California to stimulate conversation through community forum, the event is sure todraw a good crowd. Despite the fact that “co-conspirator” Makenna Held feels that hehas “found that there is a lack of opportunity for really smart, intelligent dialogue”.Maybe he just hasn’t looked in the right places. Either way, it provides another oppor-tunity for Maconites to discuss important issues in a controlled environment so I’m
sure there will be many positive things thatcome from it.
Later than night you can catch Xavii atRoasted Café where they’ll be supported bytwo incredibly talented bands from Atlanta,Faun & A Pan Flute and Red Sea. The showis for free and is working as a fundraiser forXavii’s planned East Coast Summer Touralongside Trufflelina, another Macon bandwho just put out a brand new album. Just aquick walk down the talking alleyway andyou can wind up at the Hummingbird forTedo Stone and the Bird’s Cinco Party. AlexScarborough is turning 21 so make sure totreat him properly.
If you’ve got even an ounce of energyleft in you Sunday, you should do your best tocome down to Roasted for a special Sundayshow from Floco Torres as he’s supported byout-of-stater’s Lushlife, Cities Aviv andAnte Meridian. Macon doesn’t get a stackedlineup of independent hip-hop artists and thisis not one you’ll want to miss. Lushlife, a pro-ducer/rapper from Philadelphia, has been qui-etly creating an online buzz for the release ofhis newest album and is currently touring theStates in support of it. For fans of everythingfrom J Dilla to Mim0sa, you’ll want to checkhim and his crew out. Again, another FREEshow for your entertainment pleasure.
The following night marks the firstdebate in the 26th District Senate at TheHummingbird Stage and Taproom. If youremember last year, the Bird had over 300people attend their first political debate andregistered over 50 new voters. If you haven’tcaught wind of the events that have transpiredin the past few weeks involving this particu-lar district, you’re in for a treat. TheHummingbird has invited incumbentMariam Parris, along with former SenatorDavid Lucas, as well as the slew of potentialcandidates who have announced their pursuitof the position. These range from local per-sonality Dwanye “JuBee” Webb to The Captainto former political partners Irving Martinezand Howie D. Hansel. I think there may be 4 or5 others, but at this point that changes every day.The open forum-town hall style debate willallow the candidates to discuss their campaign’sbasis and answer questions from the public. Iwouldn’t miss this if I were you, whether youhave an interest in local politics or not.
Finally, it’s River Season and I’m mak-ing repairs to the raft. Get in touch with meif you want to take the maiden voyage of theyear. Until next time!

His latest, Plateau Vision¸finds Lush create that rare, contemplativehip-hop LP, with the pop-friendly under-pinnings of big-room hip-hop.

In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Clevelandhad struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, JasonHoward. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who
had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrestfor robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabil-itated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, was-n't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, JasonHoward continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs,Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Clevelandwrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later con-firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beatenfirst. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained:
Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I willnot only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered,so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame.
For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he con-structed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured onAmerica’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Policefound him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross countryrunner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is apage of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
