Meal planning for oneCooking for one can be challenging - most recipes and sales are meant for more than one person. Use the tips below to help when you’re cooking for one.
Freeze extra portions:Is the package of meat, poultry, or fish too big for one meal? Freeze the extra in single servings for easy use in future meals.
Freeze extra portions:Cook once, eat twice:Making chili? Store leftovers in small portions for an easy heat-and-eat meal. Serve over rice or a baked potato to change it up!
Sip on smoothies:A smoothie for one is easy! Blend fat-free or low-fat yogurt or milk with ice, and fresh, frozen, canned or even overripe fruits.
Order at the deli counter:Deli counters offer small quantities. Ask for a quarter pound of roasted poultry and 2 scoops of bean salad or marinated vegetables.
Use a toaster oven:Small, convenient, quick to heat! They’re perfect for broiling fish fillets, roasting small vegetables, or heating up a bean burrito.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that is caused by the death of degeneration of brain cells. The disease causes memory, thinking and behavior problems that affect several areas of a person’s life, including their personality. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s are small at first, but as time goes on, they become severe enough to interfere with a person’s daily life. Most people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s are in their 60s or older. Early onset Alzheimer’s can be diagnosed in patients much younger. One in five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and it’s the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer’s is a disease that progresses over time. Those who suffer from Alzheimer’s usually live for an average of eight years after the symptoms have become obvious to others. Some people are known to have lived up to 20 years with the disease if it’s treated early and properly. In order to detect the disease in its early stages, it’s important to look for the following signs and symptoms: * Memory loss that affects daily life. This is the most common symptom, especially if the person is forgetting information learned. * Forgetting important dates, or events or asking the same information over and over again are important signs.
* Difficulty in planning or solving problems - this could include a person having difficulty following a plan or daily routines like following a recipe or paying the monthly bills, or concentrating on a task, or even remembering the rules to their favorite game. * Confusion with time or place - some people with Alzheimer’s may forget the date, season or even year that they are in. They also may have difficulty understanding where they are or how they got there. * Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relations - may have difficulty reading, judging distance or determining color which may cause problems when driving. * Misplacing objects - a person may misplace objects or lose them and have difficulty retracing their steps to find them. They may actually blame it on someone else for stealing them. This occurs more frequently as the disease progresses. * Changes in mood, personality and judgment - people who suffer from Alzheimer’s can become confused, sus-picious, depressed, fearful or anxious. All these feelings may affect the person’s personality - they may have become upset with other people, have poor judgment in dealing with money or when trying to keep themselves clean. Alzheimer’s currently has no cure but there are treatments available that delay the disease’s symptoms. Medication treatments help patients stay at a higher level of functioning longer than those who do not get the medication. It also seems that the earlier the patient starts taking the medication the better. The medication works best when combined with a healthy diet, exercise, social interactions and activities that stimulate the brain.
The Board of Directors of the Thayne Senior Center meets on the second Monday of each month @ 10:00 am. Any person who has an interest or who has business to conduct may attend.
Detecting Alzheimer’s Early
Sarah, a sales associate at Walmart, notices a man in the card section. When she walks by an hour later and sees him still there she walks over to see if she can help. “Can I help you?” she asks. “Well I don’t know” the man responds “I’m having a problem, I can’t find anything my wife would believe!”

Meaning of Flag Draped CoffinDo you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?
Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!
The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life. The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life. The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world. The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.”The 6th fold is for where people’s hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic. The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born. The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrew eyes, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christian’s eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nation’s motto, “In God We Trust.”
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving forthem the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing thingsthat have deep meaning. In the future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.
Each month, local merchants contribute to the success of our Birthday Bash by donating goods and/or services. Lunches for the birthday celebrants are purchased by Bank of Star Valley. Gift certificates for chocolates are provided by StarValley Chocolates. Hi Mountain Floral contributes a floral arrangement.

The neighbors thought it was odd, but 93 year old Morton was dating again. OneMonday morning Morton woke up with a funny feeling that something important happened last night. It was during breakfast, that Morton finally remembered what it was. He had proposed to his date Greta. But what she answered he just couldn’t seem to remember. Morton picked up the phone and dialed, “Hi Gerta”, said Morton, “I have a funny question for you, do you remember last night when I proposed?” “Oh my gosh” gushed Greta, “I’m so glad you called, I knew I said yes to somebody but I just couldn’t recall who it was!”
