Beacon of Hope Campaign Success begins New Era at CCC

As the late, great American poet Maya Angelou pronounced, “When you have an attitude of gratitude, you wake up saying ‘thank you’.” We could not agree more!

That’s why we are so grateful to God – and you – every day for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon the Cleveland Central Catholic community. We thank all who pray for our school, who support our students and their dreams, and who provide the financial resources needed to advance the mission of Catholic education in our city. Your commitment empowers our students and their families, which also benefits their neighborhoods and our broader community.

This CCC Advancement Review 2016-17 is our report on the school’s recent fiscal year, which concluded on June 30, 2017. We also want to share a few highlights from the past school year, including the progress made on the Beacon of Hope Campaign. This is our opportunity to publicly acknowledge and thank our generous donors and partners in this very special ministry of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Because of your dedicated support, CCC enjoyed another tremendous year in 2016-17. With full enrollment (611) again, our students were inspired to deepen their faith while also excelling academically and learning first-hand about service to others.

Just over two years ago, our school launched A Beacon of Hope: The Campaign for Cleveland Central Catholic. The Campaign Leadership Team affirmed an ambitious $5,175,000 goal, so that CCC could address five priorities that would bolster the school by laying the foundation for an even brighter future. Back then, the excitement of a new campaign was offset by the anxiety of attaining the challenging goal. A three-year campaign seemed like an eternity!

On September 7, we celebrated the passing of the campaign goal with a “thank you” dinner, highlighted by remarks from Bishop Emeritus Anthony M. Pilla – who reminded the crowd how special our school is and that by supporting CCC “….you are giving students the opportunity to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ; a friendship and a faith… what more can you give them?”

We are, of course, also grateful to all the adults who support the progress that our students make. This includes our outstanding faculty, our dedicated staff, our extraordinary Advisory Board members, and other volunteers who help us in so many important ways. Finally, we wish to also salute our students, who embraced the encouragement and assumed their responsibilities. Well done!

While we are thrilled to acclaim that the Campaign has surpassed its goal, there is still much work to be done. Over $1.7 million of the campaign commitments are in deferred gifts, meaning CCC may not realize the cash value for years to come. This means we must continue to invite others to join in our success throughout this third year of the campaign effort. We welcome and appreciate your continued generous support of our amazing school.

Gratefully,

John E. Cvetic Leo P. Hyland Chair, Advisory Board President

Bishop Emeritus Anthony M. Pilla

A Beacon of Hope, the campaign for Cleveland Central Catholic High School, has surpassed its goal and successfully raised more than $5.2 million for this amazing urban high school. Dollars raised will be used for physical improvements to the aging school building, tuition assistance and scholarship funding, enhancements in Central Catholic’s Special Education Program, and the completion of Stefanski Stadium.

The Beacon of Hope campaign will continue as originally planned, raising even more money to help support the needs of this school. The BOH leader-ship team, administration, advisory board, faculty and staff would like to thank the many individuals, foundation and corporate partners, families, alumni and community members who have already given to make this ongoing campaign such a success.First, we would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Beacon of Hope Campaign co-chairs George M. Chase ’61, Jerry Kysela, and John A. Peca ’70. Their vision, leadership, determination and persistence played a pivotal role in helping Cleveland Central Catholic’s Beacon of Hope Campaign achieve its monetary goal almost one year early. Wow!Why did these men step forward to serve in this capacity? Peca simply states, “Because I can think of nothing more important to spend my time on. My gut told me the time was right for this campaign. While the quiet phase of the campaign began three years ago, we publicly launched A Beacon of Hope campaign in September 2016. We were blessed by God with some very generous gifts by unexpected sources. Mr. Richard Fisher, a Catholic philanthropic advocate, donated one million dollars which gave the campaign tremendous momentum. Without people like Mr. Fisher and CCC’s advisory board, we would not be where we are today. The faith and belief in our benefactors supporting the mission of this school made the difference.”Why the name, “A Beacon of Hope?” Kysela explains, “It sums up the school. Cleveland Central Catholic is a place of great hope for inner-city kids and their families who come from tough circumstances. Receiving a Catholic, college and career readiness education is a marvelous opportunity that they

otherwise might not have. It was also time to address some critical and urgent needs at the school. A great deal of energy and time was spent planning the campaign. Our goal of raising $5.175 million was massive for an inner-city, parochial school. We knew we could not rely simply on current families and alumni, like many affluent high schools in northeast Ohio. I was amazed at how the advisory board stepped up and made significant personal commitments and reached out to others in their social circles for help. The result is fantastic.”“If you looked at the neighborhood before Cleveland Central Catholic’s renewal effort began, there was crime in the streets; the school had fallen on hard times. Today, Cleveland Central Catholic High School is a pathway to success for its students. It truly is a ‘Beacon of Hope,’” describes Chase. “We also want to thank George Wasmer, who spent two years and more than 50 hours sitting down with us and asking, ‘What do we know? What do we not know?’ as we considered the feasibility of this capital campaign,” Leo Hyland, president of CCC, acknowledges. “His knowledge and willingness to advocate for this campaign made a huge difference. George pushed us when we questioned whether the timing was right. In January 2013, advisors said we had no chance of success. Within 18 months, thanks to George’s confidence and guidance, we were ready to launch the campaign.” “George was locked in like a pit bull, defining and even envisioning our future campus. George Wasmer is a real gift to this school. He is unique, soliciting help in such a positive yet unforgiving way,” Peca describes, with a smile.“Leo Hyland brought it all together and drove this campaign,” adds Chase. “The fundraising campaign needed someone on CCC’s staff. Leo defined the issues and connected the dots. He is a gentle nudger. If we got off track, Leo was there to nudge us forward.” “Chris Hagerty was also spectacular in helping to guide us. He is a real pro. Chris Hagerty is a principal in Partners in Mission and a consultant for CCC,” Kysela states. “John and Laurie Cvetic had already made a significant gift to the campaign but went the extra mile in a way we were not anticipating. They gave a charitable donation in the form of a life insurance policy listing Cleveland Central Catholic as the beneficiary.”

CCC’s Beacon of Hope shines brightly THANKS TO YOU!

Chase, Kysela, Peca and Hyland recognize the role of Third Federal, Marc Stefanski, and Bishop Anthony Pilla in not only keeping the high school open years ago, but continuing to be involved at Cleveland Central Catholic – lending financial support, guidance and community involvement.“There were also important roles in the capital campaign for people who could not give financially,” Hyland insists. “Lending their name and credibility mattered. Little things matter. It’s part of the story.”In addition to celebrating the monies raised, all three co-chairs describe the fulfillment and optimism they feel looking forward. “To witness so

many individuals stepping forward and making huge financial commitments, in a poor economy, was both surprising and amazing,” Kysela concludes. “We are committed to being good stewards of these gifts. It all comes down to our students, their needs, and what will help them to achieve their future aspirations and dreams.”

Thanks to the generosity of so many, a Beacon of Hope will continue to burn ever brighter at Cleveland Central Catholic High School. The BOH leadership team encourages other individuals, alumni, community members and local corporations who have not yet done so to give to this very worth-while and needed campaign!

Special Events Summary

Calcutta 2017Wednesday, March 15

The 14th Annual Calcutta Auction grossed more than $162,000 for tuition assistance. Calcutta is the school’s signature fundraiser featuring a live and silent auction. The live portion features bid-ding on the 64 teams competing in the NCAA’s March Madness tournament. This year mobile bidding was introduced for the silent auction which allowed access to the auction to individuals whether or not they were in attendance at Calcutta. Thanks to a generous board member, CCC was able to raffle off a week at a luxurious vacation home on Hilton Head. Another generous

donor contributed an unaccompanied foursome on the Muirfield Village tournament course, including dinner and overnight accommodations. Event co-chairs were John Simon ‘72 and Jim Klessel and the committee was rounded out by John Malcom ‘82, John Cvetic, Allyn Davies, John Gallagher III and Jerry Kysela.
