A NOTE FROM KARENAND MICHAEL

Virginia Peninsula Foodbank Gratitude Report 3

Dear Friends,

I think you will all agree that, regardless of any perceived diff erences among us, each of us has a duty and a responsibility to care for the most vulnerable in our community. Providing nourishment to food insecure children, seniors, and families is at the heart of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s mission. We work hard to fi ll tables and improve lives every day. Unfortunately, the need for our services has not diminished; for that reason, we must strive to fi nd innovative ways to fulfi ll our mission. Food insecurity remains a challenge for many here on the Peninsula. We had one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Virginia last year with 13.8% of our residents facing hunger and a lack of access to adequate food and nutrition. A signifi cant need always demands a signifi cant response.

Hunger relief is most successful when we collaborate through a shared passion for service. During fi scal year 2016, we placed an even greater focus on providing nutritious food. Research tells us that food insecurity and poor health are related, so we continue to work to bring nutritious food access to food deserts, low income senior living facilities, and other vulnerable populations through our mobile pantry program. This expanded program provided the equivalent of almost a million meals to those communities—including an abundance of fresh produce! Your support of our mission is invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for your donations of food, funds, time, and advocacy as we work to provide this nutritious food to our hungry neighbors across the greater Peninsula.

As you fl ip through the pages of this gratitude report, you will read about and see pictures of some of the other programs that Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has established to provide food and hope to our community. You will also see the individuals, corporations, organizations, and faith communities that brought food, funds, and other support to our mission. Every can or dollar donated brings us one step closer to closing the hunger and nutrition gap in our community. Thank you for your support of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and your help to fulfi ll our important mission! Together, we are providing not only nourishment, but a sense of comfort and hope.

With appreciation,

Karen L. Joyner Michael DanielsChief Executive Offi cer President 2015-2016 Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, Board of Directors

With appreciation,

Karen L. Joyner Michael Daniels

PARTNER AGENCIES

Distributing 11.7 million pounds of food wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of nearly 175 community partners, also referred to as Foodbank Partner Agencies. Successful collaborations with schools, faith-based organizations, food pantries, shelters, and community centers has, and always will be, the key to accomplishing our mission.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VOLUNTEERS

Virginia Peninsula Foodbank Virginia Peninsula Foodbank Gratitude ReportGratitude Report 2323

Our volunteers are consistent and energized. They provide us with much needed support. It seems our volunteers are always at the ready, both in the warehouse and off -site. They often teach us new ways to perform standard tasks, perhaps more effi ciently.

This is a gentle reminder to us of just how important volunteers are. This year over 6,700 volunteers provided more than 27,000 hours of their time and talent. They make our work possible. Food gets sorted, shelves get restocked, bags get packed, orders are fi lled, cardboard is recycled. So when we say “we love our volunteers!”, it is truly an expression from the heart.

Your support makes a world of diff erence.

Thank you!
