Your books...
5 years 564,000 books
Hundreds of thousands of students. In the last 5 years READ has taken over 560,000 books to schools in East Africa, reaching hundreds of thousands of students. Our volunteers personally distribute the books and work together with the schools to put them to best use. In 2010 with the help of UK schools we will send 300,000 textbooks to 300 schools in Tanzania and Uganda. Alongside East African students we will also refurbish 15 school libraries, creating an engaging reading environment for study and leisure.

We see a world where you
through the power of education.
Our vision “
Option 1
Alongside one-off book collections we also provide schools with a permanent Drop Box so throughout the year your school can collect books you no longer need. Once your Drop Box is full, just get in touch and we will pick up your donation. Donating disused books to READ not only provides valuable learning tools to East African schools, it also means you can dispose of your books in a sustainable way.

We offer...
Fundraising opportunities
Global Citizenship School Speakers
We see a world where young global citizens achieve development
through the power of education.
...help us to realise it ” Option 2 Fundraise
At READ we rely on the money raised by our generous supporters. Schools can help by organising one-off fundraising events or by making READ their Charity of the Year. 50p sends one book to East Africa; £392 sends textbooks to a whole school and £1975 refurbishes and fills an entire school library! So you can see that any donation, no matter how big or small, really makes a difference.
Our volunteers can come in to your school to give an assembly, run a workshop or work with your students for a full day. These activities give your students further insight into READ’s work and help them to see how they can play an active part in their global community. Our workshops are tailored to the Citizenship syllabus and are delivered by our READ and Oxfam trained volunteers.

“READ International came to my school, Saba Saba, first with books and then to make a new library. Our teacher was very pleased with the books and my friends liked reading them in class. The old library was dark, dirty and usually closed…Now there are new books and the library is good to work in. I have somewhere to do my homework before I start my chores in the evening.”
Student, Saba Saba Secondary School, Mtwara, Tanzania.
