Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a

director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Life Master newsJane Gardner of

Northville MI is a new Life Master, earning her gold card in the first session of the Gold Rush Pairs on Saturday. Her partner was Bob Ondo of Ann Arbor MI. At the start of the NABC, Gardner needed 9.09 masterpoints to get to 500. A section top in the Saturday event pushed her over the top.

Correction: In the announcement in yesterday’s edition that Dee Dee Harris became a Life Master, her partner was identified incorrectly. Marlene McKinnon was Harris’s partner.

Myrna Mackey of Niagara Falls ON became a Silver Life Master (1000 masterpoints) when her team made the final of the Friday-Saturday Knockout Teams, Bracket 3. She was playing with Sharon Stevens of Vineland-Stn ON. The two play often at the Bridge Centre of Niagara in St. Catherines ON. Their teammates were Susi Pitts of Cumming GA and Joan Bentz of Ann Arbor MI.

Better news for GatlinburgPete Misslin, chair of the Gatlinburg Regional

scheduled for April next year, reported on Saturday that the situation has improved in the city that was damaged by wildfires that hit the city and the area seven days ago.

Misslin said authorities are letting some people, accompanied by insurance adjustors, back into the city to inspect their properties. The city had been under evacuation orders since the wildfires came near. About 300 buildings in Gatlinburg were damaged but the downtown area of Gatlinburg was spared. The convention center where the tournament will be played is the site of a convention starting this week.

Misslin also said the weather forecast called for three days of rain, starting on Saturday, which should help the firefighters in the area.

Meanwhile, fundraisers have been reported from a variety of places, Misslin said. Bill Waters, president of Unit 165 in Knoxville, reported a game at the Knoxville Bridge Center that raised $600 for relief efforts.

Misslin said he is confident that the regional will go on as planned.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDo’s and Don’ts to help

your game – Part 10By Brent Manley

DOListen to the

bidding. This admonition could have been included with the part about maintaining concentration.

Everything that happens during the auction provides information – data that can be used by both sides once the final contract is reached. Think about it. If your left-hand opponent passes as dealer, the information is already flowing: LHO does not have enough high-card strength to open. He almost surely has fewer than 12 HCP. Remembering this can help you locate key honors as you strive to make your contract or go for overtricks.

Say one of your opponents enters the auction to show a two-suited hand. Conventions such as the Michaels cuebid and Unusual 2NT typically promise at least 5-5 in the two long suits – more information you can use as you play the contract. As pointed out in a previous article on this page, declarer has a huge advantage in these situations just from knowing that the Michaels or 2NT bidder has at most three cards outside his two long suits.

If LHO opens the bidding, partner passes and RHO also passes, you have more information you can use. For example, if RHO shows up with an ace, the highest other card in his hand would be a jack.

Sometimes the opponents help you straighten out your own auction. Say you open 1NT, LHO passes and partner bids 2♦, a transfer to hearts. RHO doubles to show length and strength in diamonds. If you pass, partner knows you do not have three hearts. If you accept the transfer by bidding 2♥, partner knows you have a fit. You will await his decision about how high you should go in the bidding. Without the double, it would take at least one more round of bidding to find out if you and partner have a heart fit.

There are many more examples of how listening to the bidding and interpreting the information can help you take more tricks. Suffice it to say it’s in your interest to make listening an important part of your growth as a player.

DON’TMake the “normal” lead if the auction screams

for a trump lead. Consider the following auction. You are South.

West North East South 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 2♥ Pass 2NT Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

You hold♠ K J 9 8 6 ♥8 7 6 ♦K Q J 10 ♣A 5

The ♦K looks like an automatic lead, but if

you consider the auction, your choice will be a low heart. Think about the bidding. It’s highly likely that West has only three hearts. With four, he probably would have bid 3♥ at his second turn. You can also count on dummy to have no more than two spades. East will certainly start right in on spades so he can take some spade ruffs in dummy – if you let him. The auction tells you East likely has at least 10 cards in the majors, so he will be able to get back to his hand by ruffing one of the minors, probably diamonds.

If you start with a trump and dummy has a doubleton spade, you will certainly get in again to lead another trump, limiting declarer to just one spade ruff. Even if you don’t defeat the contract by leading a heart, you will certainly hold down the overtricks, which could give you a good score.

Take all your chances, No. 10

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: West ♠ A 6 Vul: N-S ♥ Q 8 7 4 3 2 ♦ J 4 3 2 ♣ 3

♠ 5 ♥ A K ♦ K 7 ♣ A Q J 10 9 5 4 2

With only your side vulnerable, West opens 3♠, partner passes and East ups the ante to 4♠. You have no qualms about bidding 5♣, and everyone passes. The ♠Q is led. Plan the play.

Solution You are in the dummy for the last time and

have to decide whether to lead up to the ♦K or take the club finesse. The club finesse is much less than 50% because you can’t pick up K-x-x(x) in

the East hand. Play the odds and lead a diamond up to the king, a 50% play unless West started with a singleton diamond and didn’t lead it – not too likely as most players lead singletons even when they don’t have one. If the ♦K loses to the ace and today is your lucky day, the ♣K will drop under the ace (13%). You will make this contract about 55% of the time.

Even if you had eight clubs to the A-K-J-10, you should still lead a diamond at trick two as you have a reasonable chance of dropping the ♣Q (a little more than 50%) if the diamond king loses to West’s ace. Two chances are better than one. The full deal:

♠ A 6 ♥ Q 8 7 4 3 2 ♦ J 4 3 2 ♣ 3 ♠ Q J 10 8 7 4 3 ♠ K 9 2 ♥ 9 5 ♥ J 10 6 ♦ Q 6 ♦ A 10 9 8 5 ♣ K 8 ♣ 7 6 ♠ 5 ♥ A K ♦ K 7 ♣ A Q J 10 9 5 4 2

It’s George’s World – get used to it

This deal from the Mixed Swiss Teams shows how the other-worldly influences of the universe converge at George Jacobs’ bridge table from time to time. He was playing with Bernace DeYoung. Spots are approximate. Jacobs was South. Dlr: North ♠ A K Q 5 4 Vul: Both ♥ 10 9 6 ♦ Q 10 ♣ J 9 6

♠ 3 2 ♥ A 8 7 ♦ A K 8 7 4 2 ♣ A 4 West North East South 1♠ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 3♦ Pass 4♦ Pass 4♥ Pass 5♦ Pass 6♦ All Pass

Jacobs and DeYoung are not a practiced partnership, so when she raised him to 4♦, he thought it was Kickback, asking about key cards in diamonds. His 4♥ response showed one or four. When DeYoung “signed off” in 5♦, Jacobs thought he was supposed to go on to slam with the higher of the two key card possibilities.

After asking a lot of questions about the auction, West led the ♥K and Jacobs took the ace. He played a spade to dummy at trick two, cashed the ♠K and tried the ♠Q. East ruffed low, however, and Jacobs overruffed. He then played a diamond to dummy’s 10, and when it held he played a fourth spade from dummy, on which East discarded a heart.

Now a diamond from hand went to West’s jack and dummy’s queen, pulling the last trump. On the fifth spade, East pitched another heart as Jacobs discarded his losing club. Now the ♣J from dummy was covered by the king and Jacobs’ ace.

When Jacobs played another diamond, discarding a heart from dummy, East pitched yet another heart. Jacobs, down to the ♥8 7, exited his hand with the ♥7. West, who had led the ♥K from a doubleton K-Q, had to play the queen. East, down to the singleton ♥J, followed with that card. Miraculously (maybe you can think of another way to put it), Jacobs’ ♥8 was trick No. 12.

Welcome to George’s World. The full deal: ♠ A K Q 5 4 ♥ 10 9 6 ♦ Q 10 ♣ J 9 6 ♠ J 10 9 8 ♠ 7 6 ♥ K Q ♥ J 8 5 3 2 ♦ J 9 ♦ 6 5 3 ♣ Q 10 7 6 3 ♣ K 8 5 ♠ 3 2 ♥ A 8 7 ♦ A K 8 7 4 2 ♣ A 4

funds, the hiring of a professional staff to facilitate and oversee the bridge education projects funded by the Foundation. Donors want assurance their gifts make a difference.”

The Ed Foundation is searching for trustees that “bring one of the three W’s to the table: work, wisdom or wealth. It is believed that, over time, the Foundation would have the funding to become a leading force in bridge education, frankly something that no other bridge organization has the dollars to accomplish. One key reason for the need to change is that donors have stated that under the present structure they were not willing to make meaningful donations to the Ed Foundation.”

The foundation hopes to complete the transition to the new structure by mid-2017. The ACBL Education Foundation is an independent, tax-deductible 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Barb and Larry Steiner started the bridge club at Teague a year ago. The turnout was 13 students. The club now has 26 members and a shortage of space. The Steiners said they have had to turn some students away because the classroom they use for the lessons doesn’t have room for more.

The parents are happy with their children’s interest in bridge in part because it takes them away from video games. Cesar Molina said his 11-year-old son, Joseph, started bridge this year. “He likes to think on the game,” Molina said. “We try to encourage our children to look for activities beyond what kids usually do, things that require them to use their brains.”

Joseph said he likes bridge because “it’s a nice game for partners.” Joseph plays with Soor Hansalia, who started bridge two and a half years ago at Bear Lake before moving to Teague.

“It’s just fun,” said Soor.Michael Moschella, of Winter Springs, learned

bridge from his father, John, who took him to bridge lessons. “I like the logical aspect,” said Michael.

Laney Rosenblatt, 12, attends Teague and learned bridge from a friend’s grandmother. She went to the Youth NABC in Washington DC last summer and has hopes to go again next year. Bridge is fun for her, she said, “because I get to use my mind and be with my friends.”

Barb Steiner said she has received comments from parents of the students in the bridge club endorsing the effort. “They said their kids are better at math and they concentrate better on the school work.”

Christy Cartar, who lives in Longwood, said her 13-year-old son, Colin Fair, loves math and has thrived in the bridge club. “It’s challenging,” he said. “It’s always something different.”

Eleven-year-old Eliana Nemasango, a Teague student, said she likes bridge because “it’s competing and I like winning.” Her partner is Nya Runde, also 11. She added, “I like how complex bridge is but simple at the same time.”

fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported

World champions and brilliant minds unite

for the promotion of bridgeBy Francesca Canali

What do Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, the former Vice Prime Minister of China Zeng Peiyan, the family of the famous coffee brand Lavazza and the Asian entrepreneur Chen Yeh have in common? Their love for bridge, of course!

In organizing the Yeh Online Bridge World Cup, World Bridge Federation President Emeritus José Damiani united some of the most brilliant minds of our times and world bridge champions for the promotion of bridge.

The tournament was held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The USA-BBO Team featured Gates, Bob

Hamman, Jill Meyers, Fred Gitelman, Sharon Osberg and Sheri Winestock. The Europe-LAVAZZA team was Maria Teresa and Emanuela Lavazza, Sylvie Willard and Bénédicte Cronier (first and second in the World Women’s rankings), Norberto Bocchi, Giorgio Duboin, Agustin Madala and Massimo Ortensi (coach). The Chinese Contract Bridge Association team featured Zeng Peiyan, Guo Jinlong, Dai Jianming, Yang Lixin, Zhang Bangxiang, Gu Ling, Lu Yan, Li Jianwei, Lin Rongqiang and Chen Deying. The YEH team included Chen Yeh, Shih Juei-Yu, Chen Dawei, Sun Ming, Zhang Ya-lan and Wang Ping.

The event was played entirely online on BBO and Ourgames. The Americans played from Seattle, the Europeans from Turin and the Asian teams from Beijing. The participants played through their computers under the supervision of international tournament directors. The show was broadcast on BBO vugraph and through live webcams on You Tube and on the Chinese television. That was an extraordinary opportunity for the promotion of bridge, attracting coverage by newspapers and television around the world.

For those wondering who won the event, it was the Lavazza team (see photo below), who led the friendly competition from start to finish. Of course, with such extensive media coverage, the real winner is the game of bridge.

Fast finishOn their way to their third win in the Kaplan

Blue Ribbon Pairs as partners, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell needed a strong finish in the event. In the second final session, they scored 61% on their last eight boards to win by 47.27 matchpoints on a top of 38. The following two deals helped them to the victory.

Dlr: South ♠ Q 9 2 Vul: E-W ♥ A K J 7 5 4 2 ♦ — ♣ K 4 3 ♠ A 4 3 ♠ K 6 ♥ — ♥ 10 9 8 6 3 ♦ K 7 6 5 4 3 ♦ 10 9 8 2 ♣ J 10 9 7 ♣ A Q ♠ J 10 8 7 5 ♥ Q ♦ A Q J ♣ 8 6 5 2 West North East South Rodwell Meckstroth Pass Pass 1♥ Pass 1♠ 2♦ Dbl (1) 2♥ 3♠ 4♣ 4♠ 5♦ Dbl Pass 5♥ All Pass

(1) Three-card spade supportThat was a lot of bidding by two passed hands,

but Meckstroth and Rodwell have never been known as timid in the auction. North did well to pull the double of 5♦. Passing would have resulted in minus 750. Rodwell was due to lose only two trumps tricks.

On the opening lead of the ♦10, declarer played the queen and ruffed when Rodwell covered. She played a heart to dummy and took two club pitches on dummy’s good diamonds. The bad trump split meant that North was limited to six trumps and two diamonds for minus 150. That was good for 32 matchpoints out of 38.

Another good score was waiting for them on the next round. Dlr: West ♠ A Q 10 2 Vul: None ♥ K 10 7 4 ♦ J 8 4 ♣ J 7 ♠ K ♠ 8 7 6 4 ♥ A Q 2 ♥ J 9 ♦ A Q 3 2 ♦ K 6 5 ♣ K 10 6 5 4 ♣ A Q 8 3 ♠ J 9 5 3 ♥ 8 6 5 3 ♦ 10 9 7 ♣ 9 2 West North East South Rodwell Meckstroth 1♣ (1) Pass 2♦ (2) Pass 3NT All Pass

(1) Precision: strong, artificial and forcing(2) Balanced hand with 8-10 HCPNorth started with the ♥4 and dummy’s 9 held

the trick. As Rodwell rattled off nine winners in the minors, North was feeling the pressure. He knew from the play that Rodwell had a singleton spade (South gave count at trick one to show two or four hearts). The only question was whether the stiff was the ♠K or ♠J.

At trick 10, Rodwell cashed his last winning diamond and North had to find a pitch from ♠A Q and ♥K 10. North took his best chance by discarding the ♠A. If South had the ♠K, he could win Rodwell’s spade exit and play a heart to get one more trick. As the cards lay, it didn’t matter what North discarded. He was going to be endplayed if he bared his ♠A or his ♥K would fall under Rodwell’s ace.

The resulting plus 490 was good for 29 matchpoints.

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and

continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.
