GrantmakingMy journey starts out with surgery to remove the lumps and the struggle with chemo, knowing that I’m going to be sick 4 days every week with nausea, loss of appetite, and weight loss and the struggle to keep a house over our heads, bills paid, hospital bills caught up, and gas in the car to make it there.
The struggle has caused my family a great deal of turmoil through every day living.
Although the struggle has been hard emotionally, I have good spirits and a strong family that has helped me through this.
The help I received from the Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio has helped me in a lot of ways, including making sure that I have food to eat so I can keep up my strength. It has helped me get caught up on some overdue bills, make payments to the hospital, and get gas in the car so I can get to treatments.
I want to thank you for the funding. It was a blessing to me and my family, knowing that someone out there cares about people with illness.
AccountabilityIn 2015, 92% of Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio expenses were devoted to mission-related activities that supported Ohio residents with breast cancer.

Making an impact, one woman and man at a timeOur client’s insurance coverage did not cover a surgical bra following the mastectomy. The insurance covered the cost of the actual prosthesis, but not the garment it needed to be placed in. This patient would actually refuse to go out with family or friends because she was so self-conscious and uncomfortable with her appearance. When this was discovered, a local supplier provided several surgical bras at a fraction of the cost of each garment. These items were paid for by funding from BCFO. Grateful doesn’t even come close to describing how this patient felt when she put the items on “correctly” and could resume her life with a sense of normalcy. - UH Seidman Cancer Center, Cleveland OH
Kelley is a wife and mother of 5 active children. When she came in to get mileage reimbursement for her upcoming doctor appointment, she confessed that her electric bill was behind two months. I told her about the Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio grant and the ability to use these funds to pay her bill. She immediately started crying happy tears and stated “You have no idea how much this means to me.” $222.00 made a huge difference in this woman’s daily life. - Guernsey County Cancer Society, Inc., Cambridge OH
Our client had a lumpectomy because of breast cancer. Although she had two jobs, she had to work reduced hours for weeks while undergoing chemo and radiation treatments. With funding from the Breast Cancer Fund of Ohio, The Columbus Cancer Center was able to help her and her granddaughter stay in their apartment and provide her with life-saving medications. “I wish everybody was as lucky as I am to have this support. Finally, a good thing happened to me.” – LifeCare Alliance, Columbus OH
