In April 2008, The University of Hong Kong launched the First-in-the Family Education Fund (“FIFE Fund”) with the aim of creating equal learning opportunities for first-generation university students from grass-roots families such that their development in the University would not be constrained by financial means.
The FIFE Fund also promotes the act of paying forward among students. We hope that recipients of the Fund will, after graduation, not only be able to serve the community but also help the next generation of university students.
Eligibility criteria:• Local full-time and full-degree undergraduate students
who are the first-generation university students in their families;
• Monthly household income of HK$14,580 or less and household savings and assets of HK$420,000 or less. (In line with Government Tertiary Student Finance Scheme, students who fulfil these criteria are eligible to receive the maximum level of financial assistance.)
Each successful FIFE Fund applicant receives HK$10,000 to participate in learning activities outside the classroom over the entire course of their studies.

Civil war and violence continue in Myanmar, which have resulted in the plight of tens of thousands of internally displaced people and refugees. Thus, during my first year of study at HKU, I decided to spend the summer break at the Thai/Myanmar border as an Engl ish teacher for a group of Myanmese refugee children. This three-month-long journey might not bring an enormous impact to the future of these kids but it has inspired me to do more for them.
After coming back to Hong Kong, I allied with other HKU students who are passionate about affairs in Myanmar, to start an NGO called Connecting Myanmar (www.connectingmyanmar.org). It aims to connect HKU students with the Myanmese people in bringing sustainable change there. The awareness programmes included a fundraising concert in Hong Kong at which we invited two HKU students from Myanmar to share their stories in their home country. I also returned to the same town I had visited before together with 30 HKU students where we constructed a movable school, conducted health education programmes at local schools, and built playgrounds.

The FIFE Fund has enabled me to join a cultural programme in Bangkok. The programme has inspired me a lot as I was able to participate in an intensive rehearsal and perform in a concert with Thai musicians from the Music Faculty of Silpakorn University and other local school bands. Being part of the orchestra also meant that I could learn more about their practice methods and co-ordination skills. As a clarinet player, I found the programme definitely raised my performing standard and motivated me to pursue a career in music. I really hope that, in future, I can educate the younger generation of Hong Kong to explore the world of music and appreciate the beauty of it.
