Nepal Observes 24th IDOP October 16, 2014

On October 6, The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWCSW) and National Senior Citizens Federation (NASCIF) organized a rally in the Kathmandu Valley to mark 24th International Day of Older Persons (IDOP). and Illam Based Mai Bhagwati OAH were felicitated for their commendable work for Nepalese senior citizens.

In the same way, on 16 October HelpAge International Nepal organized a program at Hotel Himalaya, Lalitpur to mark 24thIDOP. The program was marked by launching of Global Age Watch Index (GAWI) 2014, Ageing Scenario in Nepal: From Policy To Development and Bardhakya Jeevenboodh. Several partner organizations of HAIN including government authorities and media persons participated in the program.

HelpAge International's Global Age Watch Index is the first-ever overview of the wellbeing of older people around the world. It ranks countries by how well their ageing populations are faring. It is based on four domains that are key enablers of older people's wellbeing: income, health, capability and enabling environment. Similarly, Ageing Scenario In Nepal: From Policy To Development is an information book prepared by Ageing Nepal with financial support from HAIN. Likewise, Bardhakya Jeevenboodh which means Life in Old Age is a book prepared by renowned socio-economic analyst Mr. Shastra Dutta Pant (Ph.D).

Dashain Feast For Elderly Kantipur Bharatpur, October 7, 2014 Anand Bisharm Chautari, an organization based in Madi Kalyanpur, organized a feast for senior citizens on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami, the most important festival of Hindus. 35 senior citizens of Baghauda, Kalyanpur and Ayodhyapuri VDCs participated in the feast organized at Kalyanpur-4. Each senior citizen was also presented with a blanket and a pair of slippers besides meals.

Elderly Rehabilitated In The Family Gorkhapatra Makwanpur, October 28, 2014 Manav Sewa Asharma of Hetauda has reunited 60 years old Moti Bahadur Regmi with his family. The Ashram had rescued Regmi from the pavement of Hetauda where he was living a miserable life.

Misuse Of Social Security Allowance Kantipur Jajarkot, October 16, 2014 The VDC secretary of Bhagwati VDC was found to have submitted the fake documents of seven senior citizens and those who died two years ago to the District Development Committee to misuse the social security allowance allocated in their names. It was revealed that the VDC secretary was embezzling Rs. 160,000 social security allowance of the senior citizens, single women and children protection grant. Meanwhile, Sitaram Chepang of Kakada in Makwanpur was unable to receive the social security allowance though he is already 72 and has all the necessary papers including the citizenship.

Elderly Face Difficulty to Receive to OAA Gorkhaptra/Setopati.com Biratnagar, October 1, 2014 Senior citizens of Bhimeshwore Municipality in Dolakha district have to undergo inconveniences while receiving the social security allowance as they could receive it only from the Charikot-based Agriculture Development Bank. The old people had to walk hours to the district headquarters carrying passbooks and stand in queue there too for hours.

Similarly, on 22 October SETOPATI.COM published news about Senior citizens of Biratnagar who are experiencing problems to collect the social security allowance from the nearby Rastriya Banijya Bank. 70 years old Kala Devi Aacharya reported that she received her allowance after standing in queue for 3 hours. Provision to distribute allowance through bank was started when the VDC officials were found misusing them, but the new system has created more problems for the senior citizens of the district. Head of the RBB Morang District Mr. Prem Luitel reported that separate desk for the elderly will be started at the earliest possible date.

Centenarian Man Gets Social Security Allowance Kantipur Makwanpur, October 22, 2014 Ten months after he shifted to a home from the cave where he spent most of his later life, and 16 months after he obtained the citizenship card, 100-year-old Jayapati Chepang of Bharta VDC received the social security allowance for the first time. He received Rs. 2,000 as the allowance of four months from the technical assistant of VDC Tanak Moktan.

Relief Money To Daughter Kantipur Baglung, October 16, 2014 Conflict victim 67-year Karna Bahadur Pun gave all the relief money that she received from government to his daughter Krishna and made her self-reliant. Father of 3 sons and 2 daughters Pun lost his left hand when a stray bomb went off. ICRC has provided him artificial hand. Krishna is now running a beauty parlor from the money she received from her generous father.

IDDR Focus On Senior Citizens Himalayan Times Kathmandu, October 13, 2014 International Day for Disaster Reduction, 13 October was successfully observed with the central theme, "Resilience is for Life". This year IDDR has focused on the issues of older persons as they are one of the most vulnerable groups during disaster and epidemic situations. Previously the day has focused on issues of child, person with disabilities, women and girls. IDDR is observed to raise awareness about the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction and encourage people to make preparedness measures on October 13 every year. Disaster Preparedness Network (DP Net) Nepal in close coordination with HelpAge International Nepal and several other Nepalese NGOs observed the day with wide range of awareness building programs on disaster reduction.

Elderly At Pashupati OAH Take Part In Earthquake Drill Republica Kathmandu, October 14, 2014 An earthquake drill was organized at the premises of Pashupati Old Age Home by Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with National Society for Earthquake Technology to mark International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). Among 230 elderly inhabitants over 40 participated in thedemonstration.It was for the first time the elderly at the old-age home had participated in the earthquake drill. Lone Old Lady Lives In Makeshift Annapurna Post Surkhet, October 19, 2014 Sixty-six years old Tirthakali Somai of Satakhani had two sons but they started living separate after their marriage, leaving her alone. When a landslide in August this year swept away her home and farms she had nowhere to go. Even her sons did not come to console her. She now lives alone in a makeshift.

Owner Of Two Houses Finally Lands In OAH Samacharpatra

Banke, October 31, 2014

Sixty five years old Moti Devi (name changed), who has two concrete buildings in Nepalgunj has been forced to live in old age home. One of her house has been taken over by his husband, while the other one by her son and daughter-in-law. Devi was misbehaved and compelled to leave her house by her family members, and she eventually landed at the old age home.

Senior Citizens Neglected Gorkhapatra Kathmandu, October 1, 2014 In a news story printed on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, author Nagendra Sharma had claimed that problems of the senior citizens in Nepal have increased in tune with the progress made by the society. He said marking the IDOP has limited only in formality. He argued that the society has neglected the senior citizens as studies showed most of the inhuman activities are often meted out against the senior citizens. In the lengthy news story, Sapkota has also presented the population of the senior citizens. Of the total 2,154,000 senior citizens aged over 60 years, the females share 51.3 per cent.

Senior Citizens: Boon Or Bane? Nepal Samacharpatra Kathmandu, October 8, 2014 In an article Dr Kedar Karki argues that the senior citizens in Nepal have been neglected as the traditional joint family system started crumbling due to influence of western cultures. He said when people started running after materialistic facilities they forgot their bonds with the families.

75th Wedding Anniversary Kantipur Bhadrapur, October 11, 2014 An elderly couple here marked their 75thmarriage anniversary by organizing a pose ceremony. 96 years old Gangadhar Ghimire and 91 years old Maheshwori Ghimire of Bhadrapur Municiplaity-3 marked the rare diamond jubilee of their wedding amidst the presence of nearly 800 guests including foreigners.

Senior Citizens In Poetry Kantipur Kathmandu, October 18, 2014 Poets participating in the 20th edition of Poemandu (a poetry event) recalled the senior writers and poets who used to visit the Nepal-Bharat Library of Sundhara, Kathmandu. The 20th series of Poemandu organized by B.P. Koirala Nepal-India Foundation was chaired by Krishna Murari Gautam aka Chatyang Master and poet Prakash Sayami.
