8TH GRADE RESEARCH PROJECT
D.C.’s Fabulous Five
Without a doubt, the crown on our eighth grade year is our trip to Washington, D.C. in June. To best
prepare you for this excursion, you and a partner will be researching monuments, memorials, and sites in our
capital city. Your ultimate goal is to decide upon the top five tourist sites we should visit.
Student Expectations
Topics □ Use your “Final Project Must Include” list to guide you in completing this project.
Research □ Gather print and electronic resources from reliable sources. □ Use a self-created graphic organizer to gather and organize your research in your own words. □ Refer to the “Research Questions” handout to help select your top five D.C. sites.
Technology-Infused Research Project □ Design a technology-based research project to educate your classmates about the top five D.C.
sites we should visit. □ Choose one of the following technology components to present your research information:
TV Commercial Prezi Newsletter □ Refer to the “Student Resources” handout as you approach different stages of this project. □ Use the “MLA Format for a Works Cited Page” reference handout to properly create your
Bibliography page.

You will have about four weeks to research D.C. sites, write a letter to our vice principal in charge of the
trip, plan and map your itinerary, and incorporate a technology aspect of presentation (newsletter,
commercial or a Prezi). You and your partner will present your top five.
HAPPY TRAILS, STUDENTS.

Graphic Organizer
Your graphic organizer will answer this question:
What are the top five tourist sites to visit on your itinerary?
It will list your five sites down the left hand side, and will answer the following questions:
1. Why are these five sites the most important sites to visit and why are they interesting to students?
2. Where are the sites located and is it feasible to visit all five over the length of your trip?
3. What is the historical significance of the each site?
4. What is the connection of each site to the curriculum (Math, Science, Social Studies)?
5. What does each site look like aesthetically?
6. What is the cost of visiting each site?
7. Are there any customer testimonials that would help support visiting each site?
A graphic organizer should be neat and organized.
Use google docs to create a table that is 6 x 8.
As you answer each question, the boxes will EXPAND.

Your commercial must include you and your partner pitching your Fabulous Five D.C. sites on camera. In addition, you will also be required to do a standard “voice over” spot. This means that an announcer reads the copy accompanied by a synchronized video. So, you will write a script consisting of two elements: the audio (announcer’s voice over) and the video. Your script will include all of the speaking in your commercial, your voice overs, and the corresponding images to your words. Please use the template provided.
Here are some rules of thumb for writing your commercial script for television:
1. State your thesis in a creative way which quickly states your Fabulous Five (in decreasing ranking order).
2. Explain your reasoning behind your choices using the “Final Product Must Include” handout as your guide.
3. Repeat it.
4. The use of music and literary devices will greatly enhance your commercial. Consider using alliteration, similes, metaphors, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and repetition for effect.
Who: (Who is represented in each of your sites? Who is a good audience for each site and why?
Who has gone to this site and what have they said? These are testimonials.)
What: (What information does your site include? What will we gain from experiencing your site?
What are the purposes of your sites? What are some of the sights, smells, and exhibits that will
capture the viewers’ attention?)
Use sensory details and make your sites come to life!
When: (When was your site created and for what purpose? When is it open?)
Where: (Where exactly in D.C. is your site? Where are some pivotal spots at that site? Where can
readers go to find more information?)
Why: (Why are these sites important? Why are they your top five?
How: (Consider how this site educates your audience. Consider how the video clips and pictures enhance our understanding of your selected sites.)

Audio Video Kid [sound on film (SOF)]: Mr. Greene! Mr. Greene! Greene [SOF]: Yeah? Kid [SOF]: You need some help? Greene [SOF]: Uh-uh. Kid [SOF]: I just want you to know: I think--you're the greatest. Greene [SOF]: Yeah, sure. Kid [SOF]: Want my Coke? It's Okay. You can have it. Greene [SOF]: Okay. Thanks. As much swells under dialogue, lyric is heard: A Coke and a smile/makes me feel good/makes me feel nice Kid [SOF]: See ya, Joe. Greene [SOF]: Hey kid! Greene [SOF]: Catch Kid [SOF]: Wow! Thanks, Mean Joe! Music Swells.
Camera up on grim Greene, limping slowly down tunnel from field toward locker room; words "Mean Joe Greene" superimposed on picture. Because he is alone, game must still be going on with Greene out of it, due to injury. Cut to kid ( white, about age nine) standing in tunnel, bottle of Coke in hand. Cut to Greene, scowling. Cut to kid. Cut to Greene. Cut to kid. Cut to Greene, grimacing. Cut to kid, offering bottle. Cut to Greene, sighing, He takes it, drinks, greedily. Cut to kid, who hesitates, waiting for autograph or sign of recognition from his hero. Finally kid turns to leave, reluctantly. Cut to Greene, suddenly animated and smiling. Greene grabs his game jersey and tosses it. Cut to kid, beaming, catching shirt. Supers fill screen: "Have a Coke and a Smile" (centered) "Coke Adds Life" (in right corner)
