Earth, Fire, Gold: Elemental Beauty – An Exhibition of Lustreware Pottery by Jonathan Chiswell-Jones. Sometimes described as ‘modern alchemy’ the process of creating lustreware dates back centuries to potters of the Islamic empire. This powerful but delicate process creates a design on the pot that reflects light and can break into iridescent colours. In the Cathedral’s Treasury, located next to the North Transept. Open daily with free entry. All are welcome.

Saturday 13th September 1.00pm – 4.00pm See Behind the Scenes at Chichester CathedralAs part of Heritage Open Days areas of the Cathedral normally closed to the public will be open to visitors. The Song School located high up in the Cathedral’s triforium, The Cathedral Library which houses a fascinating collection of rare books, The Bishop’s Chapel is the private chapel of the Bishop of Chichester.

(Please be aware that there are 40 spiral stairs up to the Song School and the Library). Free entry, all are welcome. See forthcoming events for more information.

Saturday 13th September 9.00am – 5.00pm Sussex historic Churches ride and Stride Event – Come and see the Cathedral as part of a sponsored course around the churches in Sussex. Ride and Stride is an event that all ages can enjoy. www.rideandstride.info

Opening Times and Guided Tours:Chichester Cathedral is open daily from 7.15am until 7.00pm (Summer) and 6.00pm (Winter). There is no charge for entry.

Guides give free guided tours at 11.15am and 2.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Tours last approximately 45 minutes. No need to book. Special trails available for children. Groups (min 6) can book from a range of tours. Tours include: The Art of the Cathedral, Behind the Scenes, Civil War Tours and many more.

concert. CFriends of Chichester Cathedral events. The Friends are a group of people from a

As part of Heritage Open Day areas of the Cathedral normally closed to the public will be open to visitors.The Song School, located high up in the Cathedral’s triforium and reached only by a winding spiral staircase, is where the Cathedral

choir practices twice daily under the direction of the Master of the Choristers. Come and discover its secret chamber!The Cathedral Library houses a fascinating collection of rare books stored in the Cathedral heights.The Bishop’s Chapel is the private chapel of the Bishop of Chichester. Of special interest is the rare roundel wall-painting dating from the 13th century, well-known as ‘the Chichester Roundel.’(Please be aware that there are 40 spiral stairs up to the Song School and the Library). Free Entry. All are welcome.

Tuesday 7th october 6.30pmCathedral Lecture: At the End of the Day – Enjoying Life in the Departure Lounge by David Winter, Christian Writer and Broadcaster. In this lecture David explores the whole business of getting old, from his own experience and drawing upon the stories of older people featured in the Bible. Free

admission, with retiring collection. In the Cathedral nave. All are welcome.

Saturday 11th october 2.00pm – 5.00pmJoin the Junior Choristers for the Afternoon…Chorister Open Afternoon – An event for aspiring choristers in Years 2 & 3.This informal event is suitable for boys in Years 2 and 3, and for parents of younger children who would like to hear more about the choristers and their singing. The activities will include a workshop with the choristers, an informal concert, tours of the Prebendal School, finishing with the opportunity to sing with the choir at Evensong in the Cathedral. No previous singing experience is necessary and all are welcome. Tuesday 7th october 6.30pmCathedral Lecture: At the End of the Day – Enjoying Life in the Departure Lounge by David Winter, Christian Writer and Broadcaster. In this lecture David explores the whole business of getting old, from his own experience and drawing upon the stories of older people featured in the Bible. Free

Saturday 11th october 2.00pm – 5.00pmJoin the Junior Choristers for the Afternoon…Chorister Open Afternoon – An event for aspiring choristers in Years 2 & 3.This informal event is suitable for boys in Years 2 and 3, and for parents of younger children who would like to hear more about the choristers and their singing. The activities will include a workshop with the choristers, an informal concert, tours of the Prebendal School, finishing with the opportunity to sing with the choir at Evensong in the Cathedral. No previous singing experience is necessary and all are welcome. Friday 31st october 10.30am – 2.30pm Family Activities – ‘Shadowy Silhouettes’Shadowy silhouettes hide all around the Cathedral. Follow a Discovery Trail to find them and collect a prize on completion from the shop. Come along and make a spectacular shadow

puppet and/or create your own character silhouette. There will be a charge of £2.00 per child. No need to book, just come along to the Eastern Arm of the Cloisters.

Saturday 15th November 7.00pm XMark’s Gospel – A Performance by Lance PiersonA powerful one-man performance of Mark’s Gospel by the actor Lance Pierson in the Cathedral nave. Lance has taken his one-man performance of Mark’s Gospel to venues all over the country. He tells the Gospel story with simple movement and action, bringing it vividly to life. This performance precedes the ‘The Message of Mark’ afternoon on Saturday 22nd November.

The sessions will be led by Professor James Dunn (Durham), Professor Steve Moyise (Chichester), Professor David Catchpole (Exeter and Sarum College), Harriet Neale-Stevens, Rachel Moriarty, Canon Dr Anthony Cane, Revd Irene Smale and Canon Simon Holland.Cost £6.00 per person (under 18 free).
