Holden New Zealand haslaunched a limited edition, family friendly SUV just in
time for our ‘get out and about’warmer months.
The Captiva Equipe builds onthe entry-level 2.4-litre petrolengined Captiva seven-seat SUVwith enhanced aesthetics and extraequipment — all for under $36K(plus ORC).
I drove the Holden CaptivaEquipe from Rosetown Holden —an attractive looking package thatgains factory fitted electric sunroof,18” alloys, roof rails and front foglamps.
Inside there is leather seat trimand the 7” multifunction colourtouchscreen provides the rear view
camera display.Once you have had a reversing
camera it is essential for everythingfrom parking to hooking up theboat.
But mainly they provide a hugeamount of extra safety for thedriver when little bodies might bepresent and in danger.
The safety features whenreversing are further enhanced byRear Cross Traffic Alert — startbacking and it looks for cross trafficand warns of approaching vehicles.
Similar technology is applied toBlind Spot Alert for changing lanes.Radars mounted on the sides of theCaptiva monitor blind spots forapproaching traffic and warningsare displayed in the side mirrors.
The Captiva Equipe alsofeatures Apple CarPlay andAndroid Auto connectivity, whichmakes it easier for drivers to stayconnected when they're in the car.
Extra convenience comes in theform of passive entry and start withsensor key, although push button
start and stopwould be nice, and anelectric eight-way driver'sseat.
The Captiva already has heapsof storage, but the roof racks addanother possibility — especially forgrowing families or people withmany friends.
It can easily be configured for upto seven people, but despite thecapabilities for carrying people andstuff, it is surprisingly compact andmaneuverable.
There are seven advertisedseating configurations — but
effectively there are also threemore options by folding seats onone side or the other to combine along load and passengers.
The Equipe comes with the fourcylinder, DOHC petrol engine, which has variable valve timing andis a proven smooth performer.
It has 123kW of power and230Nm of torque — delivered via a
six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.2L four cylinder diesel and
3.0L petrol V6 offer more powerand torque — but the 2WD Equipeis designed for on-road use and thesmaller of the petrol engineshandles the job perfectly, plus it ischeaper to register and run. It hasan EcoMode and according toRightCar uses 8.8l/100km.

As well getting some shots ofthe best Kiwis in action — as well as an interloping Aussie— I wanted to see my daughter’s boyfriend up fromWellington to have his first go as a navigator. Fitting Falcon farewell■ Fairview Motors Te Awamutu, Driven Te Awamutu and Waipa Workingmen’s Club are combining to give the FordFalcon a fitting farewell — and you are invited. On Sunday, October 9 from 10am — 2pm the Waipa Workingmen’sClub will host a display of Ford Falcons covering seven generations, from the 1960 XK to the latest FGX. Withmostly locally owned cars, the display will represent everything we love about Falcons, from standard models to the‘wild’ modifieds. The event coincides with The Great Race — the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 — which will be onthe screens in the club. Waipa Workingmen’s Club will be running give-aways for youngsters who come with adultsand the Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade will also have a display and will be handing around the bucket fordonations to maintain their life saving service. If you have a Ford Falcon you would like considered for the display, contact Fairview Ford Te Awamutu sales manager Grant McConnachie — 870 2535 or [email protected]
I t is one of the world’s oldestautomotive nameplates, but fromFriday, October 7 there will be no
new Ford Falcons coming off theBroadmeadows production line.
Coincidence, or not, that isSupercheap Auto Bathurst 1000Friday. The iconic V8 Supercar eventruns from Thursday, October 6 toSunday, October 9.
The Mount Panorama circuit wasbuilt and opened in 1938 and firstused for the Australian Grand Prix.
While it has hosted numerousclasses over nearly 80 years, it is bestknown for the annual ‘Great Race’ —the pinnacle of Australian motorsport— as teams raced over 500 miles, and now 1000 kilometres.
Various classes have competedover the years as the class we nowknow as V8 Supercars developed —and for much of the past threedecades it has been the rivalrybetween Australian manufacturersFord and Holden that has broughtfans to fever pitch.
The two brands dominate thewinner’s list, not surprising given thatfor a number of years only theHolden Commodore and FordFalcon were able to compete.
Lately Nissan, Volvo and, briefly,Mercedes have joined the class — ina year when Holden closes it’s doorsV8 Supercars will have a completelynew look..
The Ford Falcon was born in 1960
in America, a compact, low pricedsaloon.
The Australians built a derivativeof the American design, butengineered for harsher conditionsdownunder.
America dropped the Falcon afterthe 1971 XY model, so from the 1972XA until now the Falcon has been afully developed and manufacturedAussie car.
Ironically one of its replacementsis the Mustang — ironic becausewhen the race to produce the ‘PonyCar’ was on in the 1960s, Ford wonby using the Falcon platform tospeed up the process. Mustang DNAcan bee seen in many of theAmerican Falcon designs.
Ford Australia employs about 800
staff at the Broadmeadowsproduction line and Geelong engineand stamping plants.
All but about 160 will be out ofwork by October 7. The remainingemployees will be redeployed to thecompany’s local engineering divisionto work on foreign cars.
When the factory closes it willmark the end of 91 years of FordAustralia manufacture, and 56 yearsof Falcon.
The writing has been on the wall, however, for some time. FordAustralia has been building 83vehicles per day since June 2014, adramatic drop from its peak of morethan 600 cars per day in the mid1990s, the last time the Falcon wasAustralia’s top selling car.

Toyota Camry GLSignature Class
DEAN TAYLOR
Signature ClassCamry great valueSignature ClassCamry great value
Following last month’s ‘tripdown memory lane’ when Irevisited my old workplace
at the Thames Toyota plant —now home of Signature Class —this month’s test drive is acurrent model camry that hasbeen given the Signature Classtreatment.
The 2014 Toyota Camry GLon the Te Awamutu yard ofWaikato Toyota is an example ofthe fine work undertaken atThames.
When I first drove the newseventh generation Camry Idescribed it as the ‘best yet’.
That hasn’t changed, because the model line is stillcurrent.
That means a buyer gets thelatest model for a fraction of thenew price — under $22K — orabout half the price of a newone.
The GL is the base model —but it has plenty to offer.
In terms of looks, the maingive-away are the 16” steelwheels — but at the price a setof second hand genuine 16”alloys (from the current GL) or17” alloys (from the Atararange), or even aftermarketwheels, would smarten up thelook for a relatively small outlay.
The Camry is a roomy car, with a proven 2.5litre fourcylinder petrol powerplant thatmakes 133kW of power and231Nm of torque.
Economy is rated at under8l/100km.
The engine is matched to asix speed automatic gearbox —a responsive unit with manualover-ride.
With a little over 65,000km
on the clock, the GL Camry hasbeen driven, but not to death.
In my experience withToyota, the engine has plenty oflife left. And Toyota will havemade sure the Camry has beenfully serviced to specifications— they guarantee it.
The Signature Classtreatment ensures everything istight and right.
The exterior is in perfectcondition — the ‘factory’ finishis something the Thames plant isproud of.
Every car, once driven, soonhas a ding, scratch or chip — butnot this car, or any others fromSignature Class.
The Camry runs just how Iremember them: reliable andsmooth performance; no rattles
or squeaks; everything opensand closes properly — apractical and attractive car.
All models have an array ofsafety features, that give it a 5star ANCAP safety rating, andbeing Signature Class, it comeswith a three year warranty, threeyears AA Roadside Assist andThree years WoF checks.
It all adds up, doesn't it?
