Moredesign has designed a true sculpture for Twentyfirst. It is an original large format chair that completes the line of thinking that created Beato Pouf and Pacifico Table. Sere-no has the same anthropomorphic lines of the pouf and the table but with a spacious and comfortable seat. It is perfect for a cocktail outdoors, and becomes the ideal conversation spot, where you can enjoy the magical night-time ambiance of the beach. Sereno is “artwork” that is utilized to rethink and reinvent the surrounding landscaping. With it comes a message of peace, meditation and protection; its lines are designed with innovative materials and technologies but with the spirit of ancient and mysterious times.

Semplicità, originalità, stupore, uso
dei colori e una grande attenzione
alla funzionalità sono gli elementi
alla base dell’ultima collezione Twentyfirst.
Oggetti meravigliosamente progettati per
creare momenti di contemplazione nella
frenesia della vita quotidiana e per persona-
lizzare ambienti altrimenti piuttosto vuoti o
alienanti - dagli hotel alle case private. Og-
velocità e cambiamenti costanti in maniera
crescente. Viviamo in una società dinamica
che sta continuamente innescando nuove
forme di interazioni umane e contesti socia-
li.
Pablo Neruda
Simplicity, originality, amazement,
the use of colours and great fo-
cus on effective features are the
foundations for the latest Twentyfirst collec-
tion. Wonderful designs that create oases of
meditation in the midst of hectic everyday
life, giving character to settings that would
otherwise be empty or estranging, whether
it be a large hotel or a private home. Items
that absorb colours that people wear are
casting immediate traces of coloured forms
on the wall. Items and settings that dona-
te a pleasant feeling of amazement that
wakes one up from harsh everyday frenzy.
Emotions. Stop and look, reflect and feel.
Thanks to the media and driving technology
our lives are running and changing at a con-
stantly increasing pace. We live in a dynamic
society that is always finding new forms of
human interaction and social contexts. In-
stead of enjoying the present we are always
pushed towards the future, news, premieres.
Progress is the tool used to build our future
and our ambitions. While it is vital that we
continue on this journey, it is likewise impor-
tant to ensure that we are not overwhelmed
by this whirlwind, which uproots us from to-
day and from our lives and emotions, and
sweeps us into a world that is not yet ours.
“The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”.

Mario Mazzer ha curato per Twentyfirst
questi due progetti. Cinque domande al
designer.
Come ti definisci?
to mi è difficile risponderti. Per carattere
cerco di sperimentare più ambiti. Penso
Come reinventare nuove forme in tipo-
logie molto radicate come la sedia e la
libreria?
Una domanda che mi pongo sempre è:
perché progettare ancora quando ci sono
oggetti fantastici? Credo sia nella natura
dell’uomo cercare nuove soluzioni, maga-
to riguarda la libreria, invece, mi piaceva
che desse la sensazione che dialogasse
con lo spazio circostante. Ho sovrappo-
sto e unito diversi contenitori porta libri,
curioso e ben pensato.
continuamente, forse potrò rispondere a
questa domanda quando non sarò più in
grado di sognare.
Mario Mazzer designed these two
projects for Twentyfirst. We asked the
designer five questions.
What is your approach to design?
right from a young age I loved designing,
but I only really understood what I wan-
ted to do in the 70s, when I entered the
Splugenbrau pub in Milan, which had
been designed by Aldo Castiglioni.
How would you describe yourself?
If you mean the stylistic inspiration that
binds everything together, then it is hard
for me to answer. It is in my nature to ex-
periment in a range of spheres and I don’t
believe that one can be tied to the same
idea forever. We need to reconsider our
beliefs and to evolve; otherwise there is
no new incentive to carry on in this work.
How can new forms be reinvented of ex-
tremely traditional items like chairs and
bookcases?
I’m always asking myself: why should I
continue designing when there are alre-
ady fantastic items around us? I believe
that man has the inborn drive to search
for new solutions, perhaps just based on
a simple observation that is able to gene-
rate an idea. “John” was conceived while I
was observing the young people
in the bar, who were often sitting stradd-
led across the chairs. John’s design helps
sit in this position and the small shelf on
the top of the chair back is a comfortable
armrest and for holding a glass. This chair
is distinguished by its statement feature
that allows a range of functions. When
designing the bookcase, I wanted it to
give the idea that it was communicating
with the surrounding space, so I overlap-
ped and joined together various different
book holders, slightly offset against each
other, which is how the Meta polyethyle-
ne bookcase was born.
What is your approach to the project?
You need passion to do this job and my
starting point is to find the “light bulb”,
which always lights up with the idea after
intense creative searching. I then dedi-
cated all my passion to working around
the idea until it takes form and becomes
a feature that can improve our lifestyle.
I need to experiment extensively though
to achieve a worthy result, because for
me the design must be honest, unusual
and well pondered.
do you have a dream project that is still
locked in the drawer?
Each project comes from an idea and
each idea comes from a dream. A dre-
am is timeless and is constantly evolving.
Who knows, perhaps I’ll be able to answer
this question when I can no longer dream.

meta and John are made from rota-tional moulding and are available in a wide range of colours, with the ame final goal: efficient features.
meta // bookshelf
Meta is a bookcase. It is like a finish line that connects the author with the reader. Sometimes the exceptional nature of an object lies in the initial idea, its novelty, its function, or the new behaviours that are brought about by it. In this case, Mario Mazzer has created a solid and serious bookcase for Twent-yfirst. The overlap, and partial penetration and transferring of three paralle-lepiped shapes, which are hollow in the front, has an asymmetrical, dynamic shape with a strong personality. It is, therefore, a design that mixes geometry and curves with high technology. The product is obtained by a rotating moul-ding and available in different colours.
AVAIlAblE COlOUrS / nUde
Dopo anni di bianco e nero, dopo
decadi di grigio, fumé e piombo,
il colore è finalmente tornato di
moda.
finiti colori. E’ in questo ambito che la scelta
del colore si palleggia tra piacere personale
e contestualizzazione del prodotto.
nella gamma di prodotti Twentyfirst il colo-
re viene impiegato in modo ampio perché
rappresenta l’elemento principale per iden-
tificare l’oggetto. l’importanza del colore,
della materia, la conoscenza dei materiali
e delle capacità tecnologiche intrinseche
sono insite in ogni prodotto Twentyfirst.
After years of black and white, grey,
smoke and lead, colour is finally
back in fashion. A new season is
awaiting us with the desire for change, but
still working with the volumes and light as
well as the colours.
Colour in industrial design gives an added
value to the product, and if it is carefully
researched and designed then the project
is guaranteed success. Polyethylene is the
most widely used polymer in everyday life
and the most famous plastic in the world. It
is the material of the century, which was in-
dustrially synthesised in 1935. It is extremely
versatile in production and for mass dyeing.
Polyethylene is also recyclable, and thanks
to its eclectic nature the range of colours
and shades that the product can be clothed
in has multiplied. The language of colours
is no longer just accompanied by a one-
way interpretation and code; rather it is far
more usual now that colours are dictated by
personal choice. While it may be true that
there is the right colour for each form, it is
likewise true that there are numerous forms
that can wear an infinite range of colours,
which is where the choice of the colour is
bandied between personal choice and set-
ting the product in a given context. Colour is
widely used in the Twentyfirst range, becau-
se it is the distinctive feature that identifies
the item. The importance of colour, matter,
knowledge of materials and technology are
all inborn in each Twentyfirst product.

Alcuni cenni sulla genesi del brand...
“Twentyfirst” è l’ultimo marchio nato in
casa ElbI presentato nel 2009 con lo
scopo di introdurre la nuova “business
unit” nel mercato del mobile. Vasi, libre-
rie, appendiabiti, sedie, sgabelli, tavolini,
Twenty-
first offre oggetti di design italiano desti-
nati al mercato internazionale del mobile
e del Contract.
Quali sono le caratteristiche più distinti-
ve del brand?
Differenziazione del prodotto rispetto
all’offerta di mercato, identità e persona-
“oggetti come opere d’arte”.
avere in mano. John rappresenta ciò che
noi chiamiamo un`innovazione trasversa-
le. Un oggetto che è più di ciò che è.
pensi esistano ancora le “tendenze”
nell’interior design? e quale sarà la ten-
denza per il futuro?
Più che di tendenze parlerei di “tradizioni
consolidate”.
nante. Posto che questa strada non deve
essere abbandonata dal momento che è
una parte importante dello “stile italiano”,
ritengo che le persone vogliano trovare
un riscatto rispetto al grigiore dei tempi
che stiamo vivendo. Un stile vivace, co-
lorato ma equilibrato può rappresentare
una strada percorribile.
Vuoi condividere con noi alcuni progetti
per il futuro del brand?
Stiamo guardando con grande interesse
al mondo del Contract e dell’Opendo-
or, vorremmo creare nuovi progetti che
avessero come obbiettivo la commistione
di generi e di tradizioni. Ogni singolo pez-
zo deve avere un messaggio, una storia
da raccontare. Questa è l’ambizione dei
prodotti Twentyfirst.
A few notes on the genesis of the
brand...
“Twentyfirst” is the latest brand in the
ElbI family, which was presented in 2009
to introduce the new business unit in the
furniture trade. Vases, bookcases, coat-
stands, chairs, stools, side tables, lounge
systems that were conceived from the
cooperation with Italian designers.
Can you explain the hidden meaning be-
hind the name Twentyfirst Livingart to us?
Twentyfirst has a fresh and modern ima-
ge that looks to the future full of curiosity
and drive. Twentyfirst is the new century,
our century, where art, creativity, inven-
tion and innovation have endless oppor-
tunities for research and progress. Twent-
yfirst proposes Italian design items to the
International furniture and contract trade.
What are the brand’s most distinctive
features?
Standing out from the other products on
sale, each item has a distinct identity and
personality, efficient features.
Which new products will be presented
at the Furniture exhibition?
The META bookcase, which was presen-
ted as a prototype last year, is now one of
the most interesting items in our collec-
tion for its versatility (in the home, office
or contract settings), for its reasonable
price and wide range of colours. SERE-
NO is a special very large chair designed
to complete a collection of furniture with
PACIFICO and BEATO. It is the conclu-
sion to our considerations of “items as
works of art”. HHC is a modular system of
seating designed for friendly social get-
togethers. JOHN is an unusual chair with
a new interpretation of the classic chair,
with the small shelf on the top of the
chair back for your glass, book or
anything else you are holding. John is
what we call a transversal innovation –
an item that goes beyond the boundari-
es of what it actually is.
do you think there are still “trends” in
interior design? What will be the trend
for the future?
rather than trends I would call them “con-
solidated traditions”. We are coming from
an era where the furniture market consi-
dered linearity and sobriety as its domi-
nant trend, and while this tradition must
never be abandoned, as it is an intrinsic
part of Italian style, I feel that people are
looking for something that redeems them
in some way from the grey times we are
living. A lively colourful but well-balanced
style could be a trend to follow.
Can you tell us about any of your future
projects for the brand?
The Contract and Opendoor markets
are very interesting and we would like
to create new projects that are able to
combine genres and traditions. Each
item must carry a message and have
a story to tell. This is the ambition of
Twentyfirst products.
Valentina brustio marketing and press manager
Mario Mazzer has created a chair with a new functionality for Twentyfirst. In how many ways you can use a chair? You can sit, lean, support, and swing. But where do you put your drink? John has a small shelf on the seat back that lets you place your cocktail, your book, or anything else you may have in your hands. It becomes a convenient table for an outdoor aperitif, a lectern, or a practical work station for a laptop or tablet. It’s just one step forward Twenty-first’s quest to reinterpret the functionality of different objects.
john//chair
La sedia, nella sua accezione ori-
ginale, è un oggetto inventato, o
forse sarebbe meglio dire esco-
gitato, nella notte dei tempi per sedersi,
riposarsi, stare.
Esistono oggi numerosi
tipi di sedute: sedia, sgabello, seggiolone,
poltrona, sedia a dondolo, sedia per bam-
bini, senza dimenticare le più sfortunate
sedie delle torture inventate nel medioevo
e, con qualche modifica, sventuratamente
“sopravvissute” fino ai giorni nostri. non
parliamo poi dei materiali utilizzati per la
sua costruzione: legno, alluminio, plastica,
cartone, gomma, paglia.
Esistono anche infinite forme e design di
questo oggetto antico e primitivo.
la sedia è entrata prepotentemente nella
nostra quotidianità privata ed anche nel
mondo dello spettacolo e delle rappre-
sentazioni (cinema, cabaret, ballo, rappre-
sentazioni), assumendo nel tempo signifi-
cati molto diversi.
ri, quindi in modo ordinato, funzionale e
appieno. John è una sedia da utilizzare,
sfruttare, vivere.
pagina 11
Way back in the history of man
the chair was invented, or ra-
ther devised, as something
to sit on, rest and stay still. In fact the
chair is one of the first pieces of furnitu-
re in history, and was originally a simple
board that rested on two pieces of trun-
ks at the sides. The first, less rudimental
and more complete, single chair, was ini-
tially used by priests and princes as they
had the noble right to be apart from the
masses and sit separately, as if on a thro-
ne. nowadays there is an endless range
of seating items: chairs, stools, big chairs,
armchairs, rocking-chairs, children’s chai-
rs, without forgetting the less popular tor-
ture chairs that were invented in the mid-
dle ages and which, with a few alterations,
have unfortunately “survived” until now.
Then there is the vast range of materials
used to make them: wood, aluminium,
plastic, cardboard, rubber, straw, and so
on. This antique and primitive item now
has an infinite range of forms and designs.
The chair has leapt into everyday private
and public life, and also into the world of
show-business and events (cinema, caba-
ret, dancing, events) where they have had
very different meanings over the years.
The way that chairs are used has evolved
over time as well, initially used for resting
on or for working, they were orderly, fun-
ctional and compact. now though, we
want to sit how we want: sitting back-
wards on a chair may seem impolite ini-
tially, but it makes us feel freer, rebellious,
irreverent, self-confident, exhibitionist
and also playful, lively, carefree and so-
mewhat childish and, why not, sexy. John
fully embodies this new and modern me-
aning and is a chair designed to be used,
exploited and lived.
