The Seventh Lunar Month (農曆七月) is

commonly known as the "Ghost Month"(鬼月). In urban legends, the hell gate willbe open during this month, and will beclosed at the 29th day of the month(2011/7/31~8/28).

Based on recent researches, the SeventhLunar Month in ancient periods were

used to be an auspicious month. JhuYuanJhang (朱元璋), the emperor and thefounder of Ming Dynasty, believed inFengshui (風水) and did not allow folksand the royal families sharing theauspicious time of the auspicious day,therefore he sent out fake Taoists andspread rumors that the Seventh LunarMonth is the unlucky Ghosts Month.

Taiwanese immigrating after the MingDynasty, completely transplanted the

pseudo customs to Taiwan. It

accidentally becomes the only groupof Chinese that keeps the custom of the Ghost Month.

There are two big festivals during thismonth: Cisi (七夕, the 7th day of theSeven Lunar Month, 2011/8/6) &Jhongyuan Festival (中元節, the 15thday of the Seven Lunar Month,2011/8/14).

The 15th day of the Seventh LunarMonth (農曆七月十五, 2011/8/14) iscalled "Jhongyuan Festival" (中元節) byTaoism, and nicknamed the "GhostFestival" (鬼節). According to thelegends, the hell gate will be open

during the Seventh Lunar Month for amonth. All unclaimed souls will comeout from the underworld and acceptpeople's support in this world.
