OPERATION PURPLE
FREE SUMMER CAMPS
There are 2 camps available in NY State, Camp Wa-
basso locally from July 29, 2012 - August 3, 2012 and
Pioneer Camp from July 8, 2012 - July 13, 2012 in
Western NY. There are also camps available in other
areas of the country as well. To find out more about the

We have grant funding for 6 to 8 high school students from of military
families in the Ft. Drum area participate in our Close Up government
and civics program in Washington, DC this May or June.
This week long residential programs gives students the opportunity to network with peers from
across the country, meet with policy makers, participate in debates and workshops on current
issues and explore Washington, DC monument and memorials. Attached is an introductory let-
ter from our Foundation.
We have program weeks available in May and through the end of June. Please have interested
students and parents contact me by March 26th to apply. This opportunity will be on a first

The Close Up Foundation is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education or-ganization. Since 1971, Close Up has worked with students and educators across the country to pro-mote active citizenship. Through seminars with Washington policymakers and explorations of govern-ment offices and historical sites, high school students get a “close-up” look at the process of democracy and our nation’s heritage. This 6-day program prepares young citizens to meet the challenges of gov-erning themselves and their nation through the following:
Discussions of key domestic and international issues with members of Congress and their staff, Washington insiders and other leading policy experts.
A comprehensive study visit to the significant historical sites and cultural neighborhoods of our na-tion’s capital.
Daily small group discussion workshops that debrief students on the day’s activities and encourage them to explore current issues.
Self directed time with their teachers to explore Washington, DC.
Opportunity to earn college credit through the University of Virginia
Students may choose to participate during one of the following weeks:

May 6th to the 11th May 27th to June 1st June 17th to June 22nd
