Editing/Camera Work I am textually analysing the editing/camera work of Arctic Monkeys - Brainstorm. The editing between these shots matches the speed and beat of the music and is very rapid meaning the audience has hardly any time to focus of the range of different shots. The random collection of shots hints that there will be no narrative shown in the video. For the first thirty seconds of the video the editing cuts rapidly between a low level lighting, extreme long shot of the band (pictured on above left), the pixel-ated and colourful screen (pictured on above right), a close up of the screen with dancers (pictured below right) and the black and white photo of a woman (pictured below right). This pattern of shots is repeated throughout the first thirty seconds of the song before the singing begins.

Editing/Camera WorkI am textually analysing the editing/camera work of Arctic Monkeys - Brainstorm.

The editing between these shots matches the speed and beat of the music and is very rapid meaning the audience has hardly any time to focus of the range of different shots.

The random collection of shots hints that there will be no narrative shown in the video.

For the first thirty seconds of the video the editing cuts rapidly between a low level lighting, extreme long shot of the band (pictured on above left), the pixel-ated and colourful screen (pictured on above right), a close up of the screen with dancers (pictured below right) and the

black and white photo of a woman (pictured below right). This pattern of shots is repeated throughout the first thirty seconds of the song before the singing begins.

Editing/Camera WorkThroughout the video it constantly cuts to the dancers in front of a screen with is always changing colour and pattern, which matches the

pace of the beat of the song. The shots of the dancers also range from long shots, mid shots and close ups. The editing is very rapid meaning that it is difficult for the audience to focus on the shots which matches the mood of the song and its name

‘Brainstorm’.

All shots of the band are filmed from the back and vary between long shots and low angle close ups and extreme close ups. We see the dancers most throughout the video meaning that we focus on the music of the band rather than the band’s image consisting with the

conventions of Alternative Rock music.

Narrative StorylineI am textually analysing the narrative storyline of Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag.

The music video is very literal to the lyrics of the song and there are more narrative scenes throughout the video than performance shots of the band and whenever the band is shown they are shown in the location of the narrative - high school.

Whenever the lyrics refer to a person, their character will always be shown to match and this is done throughout the video.

Lyric - Her boyfriends a dick, he brings a gun to school and he’d simply kick, my

ass

Lyric - I’m just a teenage dirt bag baby Lyric - I’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby…I’m just a teenage dirt

bag baby, like you

Mise en SceneI am textually analysing the mise en scene of Biffy Clyro - Many of Horror.

The lighting fluctuates between dark enough to only see the outline of the singer and, medium lighting to see the singers face but shadow the rest of his body and very high contrasting light which outlines the whole of the singer. Half way through the lighting begins to change and

special effects lighting is bought in to mimic lightning and blue lights begin to flash on and off.

The props used in the video are general musical instruments such as guitar, bass and drums.

Mise en SceneThroughout the video the colour is natural although there is

also a warm, orange/brown tint to the shots. This makes the audience feel comfortable and relaxed whilst

watching the video.

The singer wears smart casual clothing consisting of a black jacket, shirt and jeans. His band also wears smart casual clothing which is black and white matching with the singer’s theme but also keeping them separate from him.

Mise en Scene

The main “actor” of the video is Biffy Clyro the artist.

The video is set in an urban location that looks like a warehouse. This follows the conventions of Alternative Rock artists.

No make up is worn by the singer during the music video.
