Finding meaning in your reading

Tip #1

• Look for words in the passage that have a similar meaning.

• These words are called synonyms.• List three synonyms for the word

hate.

Tip #2

• Look for words that have the meaning opposite to that of the unknown word.

• These words are called antonymsExample:Not all commercial websites are untrustworthy. Indeed, many

commercial sites are reputable sources of information on the topics they discuss.

• What words are opposite of reputable?• So what does reputable most likely mean?

Tip #3

• Plug in the answer choices to see which one makes the most sense in the sentence.

4. Don’t be fooled by multiple meaning words!

5. Look for hints the author gives to the meaning of the word.

• Use a dictionary to find out the meaning of the word.

• No, you can’t do this on the benchmark, but if it is a vocabulary question on the benchmark one of the other strategies should work.
