Texcom Mining & Civil is a heavy civil, earthmoving-mining organisation. The Company conducts

extensive earthmoving, bauxite and general mining activity, drilling & blasting, quarry management and extensive mine site re-habilitation. What’s more, Texcom continues to aggressively, yet very strategically expand its portfolio through the implementation of a comprehensive diversification program. Texcom’s Manager of Construction and Infrastructure Paul Carroll reports, “the Company has intelligently recognised the importance of not veering too far from its original path. However, we are focusing on diversification within the vertical markets of the mining sector. Texcom continues to adhere to its stringent modus operandi of providing significant value to its

clients and has preferred contractor relationships utilising various expert sources of knowledge within the mining sector. We have focused heavily on enhancing our own capability through the development of strategic partnerships. This enables Texcom to provide its customarily outstanding quality and great overall service throughout the mining market sector.”

Texcom applies a comprehensive focus on their clients’ needs and requirements while offering great financial transparency. Adhering to their creed of “keep it simple, get it right, do it well” helps Texcom deliver increasingly higher quality of services to a range of clients. This creed is combined with the Company’s primary E.L.I.T.E. values: Equality-Leadership-Integrity-Teamwork-Empowerment.

“By continuously improving our own organisation, we will work to provide our customers with outstanding project performance. We will gain distinction through project delivery and quality.”

Keep it Simple - Get it Right - Do it WellTexcom has a team of professional individuals covering a wide range of activities within their sector of expertise. Furthermore, all seven members of the Company’s senior leadership team have over 20 year’s exposure to the commercial arena, infrastructure, mining and quarrying industries. With that being said, Texcom is quite possibly the furthest thing from an entity operating from an ivory tower, combining extensive knowledge with genuine operational abilities.

Texcom Earthwork

Superintendent Malcom Smith explains: “Robert Batt, the company owner, is possibly one of the most experienced machine operators you’re ever going to come across. He finds it very easy to visit any of our projects and support the team and operations. He’s the leader of the Group, and with that culture and that vision, he’s passed it on through all of us. For the owner of the company to operate a machine on a mine-site, the employees out in the field will benefit highly from that, they see the culture hasn’t changed much from the grassroots. Maybe the size has, but the culture certainly hasn’t.” Mr. Batt has experienced many years within the earthmoving industry, providing Texcom with endless value through his expansive skills, especially when it comes to task-specific machine selection.

Texcom’s Competitive Advantage Texcom employs highly trained and skilled operatives and project personnel both out in the field and within their management teams. The Company is quick to point out that the people throughout their operations are the indestructible core of their competitive advantage. In order to allow their highly competent staff to take advantage of their full potential, the Company invests a significant amount in its staff. Texcom Mining & Civil are totally committed to the safety and wellbeing of all their employees. They all endlessly work to make safety their first priority. Further on this, Paul Carroll explains, “Paul Mackie is our principal in HSEQ & System Manager and I believe due to his constant determination and personal commitment to our employee’s safety, Texcom Mining & Civil have become a formidable force in Project Safety Management throughout the mining industry. We strongly believe that all our current operations can and must achieve our goal of zero harm. Texcom Mining & Civil’s purpose is to operate with an incident and injury free mindset.”

Texcom also completely understands that providing a

safe work environment for their employees and offering good working conditions are natural byproducts of comprehensive, ongoing training and leadership support. “With the market increasingly competitive these days, we knew that we needed a fully fledged, trained and nationally accredited workforce. So, we embarked on an upskilling program last year. We put all our division supervisors through frontline management training and all our operators are put through a certificate III in construction and plant operations. This ensured that legislative and safety requirements were maintained, and they are now fully accredited in up to five different pieces of plant operations. So, we not only have machine operators specifically for one piece of the plant, we have a company now, diverse, full of all-around operators that we can put on any machine, any plant, and we can go to the market and tender with that,” explains Mr. Mackie.

Texcom and TechnologySomething that continues to help Texcom keep its people safe and optimise the Company’s intensive upskilling is their commitment to technology. Texcom devotes a

strong and aggressive focus on technology and innovation within their sector. This focus helps the Company achieve a very competitive flexibility. “We can take care of our clients’ needs swiftly, we can mobilise to a mine site very quickly due to the expertise and the skill set we all possess at the senior leadership level. We’ve got a very good understanding of the client requirement. We’ve all been in the industry a long time. And we do speak to our clients frequently, so we do understand

free mindset.

their unique requirements,” says Texcom’s Operations Manager Lachlan Green. Mr. Carroll, the driving force behind the company’s diversification program explains that Texcom’s Differentiation Strategy allows for yet another powerful way to serve their clients. “We provide a variety of diversified products and services within the mining and infrastructure sector to our clients, which we believe very few of our competitors are currently offering or are unable to offer. This gives a direct advantage to our company, leapfrogging our competitors. We are able to provide a unique one

stop-shop personal service from tenement accusation through to site rehabilitation. The majority of our competitors are unable to offer such an accumulation of services allocated and managed under on banner. Our business model and tactical approach sets us apart, thus giving Texcom a distinct advantage in the marketplace today.”

Strategic Partnerships Mr. Carroll explains, “a significant element that allows Texcom to offer such a unique variety with the appeal of a one-stop shop is our

strategic partnerships.” Texcom continues to build its business with precision and control through such partnerships. This approach gives Texcom the weight of a truly comprehensive expansion of sector skill sets and experience, yet the Company is still able to stay lightweight and quick. “The only way forward for us was to partner up with large, well-established organisations and then promote a one-stop-shop proposal. We try to stay as close to our home roots as possible – keep it simple, get it right, do it well. We wanted to build a business model in collaboration with already established companies operating within the mining sector and already have proven ability within their own field of expertise.”

Paul Mackie went on to explain, “It is financially beneficial. But also on a professional note, these guys are very skilled at what they do. People coming from the likes of BHP and Rio Tinto’s environmental division expect professionalism and sector knowledge, the skill set that we probably couldn’t offer. So, we decided to engage experts in the field to build our own business and our own business model. It’s a pathway forward for ourselves to build the business. It’s beneficial to each part of the group.”

Texcom had been working with Newmont as part of a strategic tier-1 partnership, a focal point for the business since 2002. Now that their contract is complete, Texcom is taking the expertise and skills learned there into the open market, operating on various mine and quarry sites throughout the Northwest. Texcom does know though that it still needs to be self-sufficient and able to perform on its own, regardless of the partnerships it incorporates throughout its operations. “We all have our own field of expertise, we do operate without the partnership group, obviously we do have our own core business set, so that when we an opportunity arises, we will then regroup, and address it then and there, but we are still a self-performing organisation,” explains Mr. Carroll.

Texcom has also partnered with Asphar Group for its 3D modeling and laser mapping expertise. This partnership grants Texcom exceptional 3D modeling, laser scanning, mine mapping and stockpile management, aiding with cost reduction, man power escalation and increased safety while mitigating non-productive man hours and omitting the man on ground scenario.

9

Page 10: Texcom Mining & Civil

Bold, Intelligent Diversification Texcom is always on the lookout for intelligent, sustainable means of driving new business and capitalising on the resources and man hours freed up through their partnerships, training and technology. A prime example of this is their more recent ownership and operation of a rock quarry. “We noted the market demand in the Carnarvon area for rock and road base material. Thus, we acquired our own quarry and now supply large quantities of material inclusive of Lime Ag and gypsum,” explains Mr. Carroll. “Basically, the quarry accusation was part of our diversification program and was implemented through the businesses over the last 12 months or so. Predominantly, we’re a mining, earth moving, quarry management and mine-site rehabilitation organisation,” Mr. Carroll added. “We’ll continue to pursue our mine-site rehabilitation program further on down the line. It’s something close to our heart, something the company owners have wanted to excel at for quite some time now, especially now that we operate our own quarry we will strive to fulfill the owner’s vision and direction.”

“I believe companies diversify

for a host of reasons. Our company made the bulk of its sales at one operational front – it simply made sense to consider strategic diversification. By extending our portfolio of products and services we can ensure a regular revenue stream from January through to December. In other words, “the shrewd ice cream seller will turn supplier of hot soup come winter”. History tells us it’s not advisable to consider diversification until your core business is stable and profitable. We were happy and confident our business was in a perfect position – at the point of the diversification strategy implementation Texcom Mining & Civil had a stable balance sheet,” explains Mr. Carroll.

In regards to the Company’s entry into mine-site rehabilitation, simply put, the owner of the Company saw a considerably safer more cost-effective opportunity to conduct mine-site rehabilitation and pursued it. What Robert Batt did was design a one-stop-shop, adapting three systems into one operating machine so that the Company could proof seed, apply fertiliser and distribute while also eliminating the high-risk activity as well as the over excessive man hours usually needed. This

also created a safer working methodology, getting the job done a lot quicker, a lot smarter and with no element of high risk.

“We’re providing companies with all the mine-site services under one banner. We’ve got the skill set in house and our bolt-on organisations to be very aggressive in the market this season going into 2015,” says Mr. Carroll. “We’re entering the market not just so we can capitalise on it, we’re

taking this route more to help and assist other mine managers and tenement holders. There’s certainly no financial gain for the mine organisations, and we’re not going to get rich quick either. That’s not what it’s all about. It’s the industry we live in, we breathe it and we want to help where we can. This will also help us establish new relationships with new organisations.”
