OUTSTANDING STUDENT/PEER EVALUATIONS FOR 42 YEARS: My teaching evaluations haveconsistently been among the highest in my department during my career. Peer reviews have also receivedthe highest level of evaluation. I received teaching awards at each institution where I have taught.Students consistently tell me, in person and on my evaluations, how I change their lives for the better.

STUDENT SUCCESS: Many of my students have assumed high-profile careers in education, business, industry, and non-profit organizations. I keep in touch with former students, including many who are takingtheir place in academic ranks. One former student wrote, “Steve Beebe brought empowerment to my life . .. I don’t know who I would be today if I wouldn’t have met him.”

PRESIDENT, NATIONAL COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION: I served as President of the NationalCommunication Association, the largest professional communication association in the world.

DEVELOPED SUCCESSFUL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS: I led efforts to establish several new programs atTexas State, including new minors in Political Communication, Leadership Studies, and GraduateCertificate Program in Corporate Communication and Training, for which I provide the lead instruction inthe required seminar.

14). Why are you teaching? (max. 2160 characters Note: spaces are counted as characters.)I LOVE TEACHING: As long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I originally thought I wouldbecome a music teacher but soon switched to communication. I honestly have no idea what I would do if Iwere not an educator. Teaching is my life’s work and passion.

TEACHING IS MY VOCATION: In 2002-2003 I was one of 34 people in the nation selected to receive theAmerican Council on Education fellowship to explore a career as dean, provost, or president. After thefellowship, I realized that what I really wanted was to continue to teach—to work directly with students.Because I enjoy teaching, when serving as department chair for 28 years, I would frequently teach anuncompensated teaching overload during the summer.

STUDENT CENTERED: The multiple communication textbooks I have co-authored emphasize beingaudience-centered or other-oriented. I have the same emphasis when I teach: To be student-centered.Comments from students like this help me feel I am achieving my goal: “I love how passionate Beebe is.Everything he taught us was for our benefit. I never wanted to leave class or for the semester to end. Ifeel blessed to be in his class and to be taught by him.”

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:IT IS BETTER TO GET A MESSAGE OUT OF SOMEONE THAT TO PUT ONE IN THEM:My job as teacher is not to implant information in students’ minds, but to help students connect new ideaswith their knowledge and experiences.

STUDENTS SHOULD WORK HARDER THAN THE TEACHER:As a corollary principle, students should always be actively involved in the learning process rather thanpassive receivers of information.

PASSION IS THE VELCRO OF LEARNING:Great ideas presented without passion are like duct tape that has lost its stickiness.

TEACH FOR THE STUDENT'S "IN BASKET":Everyone has an “in-basket”—either literal or metaphorical. I teach to make learning relevant to eachstudent’s needs and interests.

TEACHING IS LIKE DANCING--YOU HAVE TO FOCUS ON YOUR PARTNER:I teach with the goal of developing a relationship with the learner--an ongoing connection with someone. To relate is to dance.15). Other than what has heretofore been enumerated, please indicate the highlights of your teachingcareer. (max. 1270 characters including spaces)AUTHORED TEXBOOKS USED BY MILLIONS:My 12 co-authored textbooks (with editions totaling more than 75 volumes) are an extension of myteaching; they are the curricular standard for courses taught at 1200+ universities used throughout theworld (including Russian- and Chinese-language editions) by an estimated five million students.

VISITING SCHOLAR AT OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY:Presented at both Oxford and Cambridge University; I teach a course at Oxford University based on amanuscript I discovered in Oxford's library written by C. S. Lewis, to have been co-authored by J. R. R.Tolkien.

HELPED ESTABLISH FIRST COMMUNICATION STUDIES PROGRAMS IN RUSSIA:For 25 years with 15 trips to Russia, I helped establish the Russian Communication Association; foundingmember of the Association; co-director of the first Russian Communication Association Conference inPyatigorsk, Russia.

PIONEERED THE NATION-WIDE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION TRAINING CURRICULA:I taught my first course in communication training more than 35 years ago. I helped establish the NationalCommunication Association’s Training and Development Division; I received its Lifetime AchievementAward in 2016. I am author of the leading textbook in communication training.16). Short personal history. (max. 3200 characters including spaces)

RURAL ROOTS: The road in front of the 100-year-old farmhouse in which I was raised was in HarryTruman’s jurisdiction when he was in charge of road maintenance as presiding judge of Eastern JacksonCounty—twelve miles from where I was born in Independence, Missouri. As the middle child of 5 siblings,my chores (which included weeding the garden, feeding cows and pigs, chopping the ice for the cattle onfrosty winter mornings) taught me discipline and a strong work ethic. My parents, who celebrated 76 yearsof marriage, were my first and best teachers.

EXCELLENT TEACHERS: I attended all 12 grades in the Grain Valley, Missouri, school district, wheretoday I am honored to serve as a founding member of the district’s Education Foundation. I am the onlymember of my family to obtain a college degree. I met my wife Sue at the University of Central Missouriwhile competing on the debate team. We were honored as Distinguished University Alumni of theUniversity of Central Missouri in 2010. I completed my Ph.D. when I was 25 from the University ofMissouri. After serving at the University of Miami, Florida, where I received tenure and early promotion, Ijoined the faculty of Southwest Texas State University in 1986.

TEACHING INFORMED BY SCHOLARSHIP: One way I express my teaching passion is as aauthor/researcher. I have authored or co-authored 12 widely-used books (with editions totaling 75volumes), along with more than 50 articles and book chapters, and 150 professional papers.

INTERNATIONAL TEACHING: Educational highlights include serving as a Visiting Scholar at both OxfordUniversity and Cambridge University. I have given lectures and conference presentations throughoutEurope, Asia, and Central America, and have made 15 visits to Russia, to help establish the firstcommunication studies programs there. While President of the National Communication Association Imade international educational outreach a presidential focus.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR/SPEAKER/CONSULTANT: I serve as a communication consultant, trainer, and conference speaker for several Fortune 500 corporations and government agencies, includingpresenting for the Governor of Texas Executive Development Program.

TEACHING HONORS: I have received multiple teaching awards at each university at which I have taught, including Honors Professor of the Year, the Everett Swinney Faculty Senate Teaching Award at TexasState, and Regents’ Professor. Last year I received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the NationalCommunication Association, Training and Development. The National Speaker’s Association named meOutstanding Communication Professor in America.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: What I value most is to make a difference in students’ lives, as evidenced bythis student: “There was not a single time I did not enjoy this class. I feel extremely honored to have beena part of this class. Dr. Beebe is not a professor in this class but a coach that guides each student toreach their full potential. I will never forget how much this class has helped me in my personal life. ILOVED THIS PROFESSOR.”

It’s mutual: I love teaching. Teaching continues to be my life’s passion, work, and joyMilitary Service RecordBranch Dates Rank------------------------- Not Entered -------------------------

Dear Piper Professor Selection Committee:

I am pleased and excited to write this letter of recommendation for Dr. Steven A. Beebe for the Piper Professor Award. I have been working with Dr. Beebe as his mentee, colleague and co-author for the past twelve years. I believe that Dr. Beebe is deserving of this prestigious honor for four primary reasons: (1) Dr. Beebe is an impressive teacher and student mentor/role model, (2) he is a prolific researcher and author who has had an impact on the field of Communication Studies, (3) Dr. Beebe’s research is conducted in well-coordinated research teams that include his colleagues and graduate students, and (4) he has taken on major leadership roles that have significantly guided and represented our profession, university, and department.

First, Dr. Beebe is an impressive and effective instructor and mentor/role model at all levels of education including general education, upper division courses, graduate seminars, and departmental leadership. I have observed Dr. Beebe in the classroom and consider him to be one of the most prepared, dynamic and involved teachers and leaders within both the classroom and department contexts. Dr. Beebe creates an atmosphere of understanding and a relationship with his students and colleagues that promote involvement and interest. His ability to effectively lead and serve as both a department chair and instructor assists not only his students, but also those who work with him. He sets high standards and both colleagues and students rise to meet them. He invests considerable time preparing for his classes/seminars and his instructional learning objectives and timely activities bring the objectives to fruition and guide his classes. Each is well organized, fully interactive, intellectually stimulating, and delivered using a “high impact” presentational style. Tim’s students and departmental colleagues like and respect him because of the relationship he manages to create with them.

He has consistently taught a wide variety of courses in the Communication Studies Department here at Texas State and consistently receives words of praise and admiration from his students. The accolades I can offer for Dr. Steven Beebe’s teaching can only be mirrored by the extensive admiration and teaching awards he has received over the years. Several, but certainly not all of these awards are:

Second, Dr. Beebe is a prolific researcher and author. His research examines the intersections of communication, personality, and cognition and their application to instructional, training, organizational, and interpersonal contexts. Dr. Beebe’s research appears in Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, Journal of Psychology, and Psychological Reports. He is the author of multiple texts that are utilized by teachers across the United States as well as outside of the Country. He has received numerous book awards and has been recognized as one of the most influential and prolific teaching scholars in the U.S. Below are just a few examples of his writing that have influenced my own teaching and research a

Third, Dr. Beebe’s research is conducted in well-coordinated research teams that include his colleagues and graduate students. What better way to mentor and guide students; this is evidence of superior teaching and love for the art. Dr. Beebe shares his research talents with his colleagues and graduate students by inviting them to be a part of his research team. I can imagine no better way to teach, guide, and inspire than this. His students have presented competitively paneled research papers at a wide variety of regional, national, and international conferences, and their manuscripts have consistently been featured in our discipline’s publications.

Though I recognize this The Piper Professor Award is not created to for service, I believe Steven Beebe’s service-leadership has enabled him to teach beyond the traditional walls of academia. September 7, 2017 To The Piper Professor Award Selection Committee: My name is Colter Ray and I am a doctoral candidate at Arizona State University. I am also a former student, longtime friend, and mentee of Dr. Steve Beebe. Those who know Steve know that he is a man who loves a good metaphor. Therefore, in expressing my support for Steve’s nomination for this award, I too would like to employ a metaphor. That is, if life is a journey, Steve Beebe is a landmark. Those who have met and experienced Steve as a teacher and human being will clearly recall life before encountering Steve and life after meeting him. In the letter below, there are two points I would like to express. First, a class with Steve Beebe at the helm is unlike any other experience I have ever had, and second, when Steve is your professor, expect to gain a mentor for the rest of your life, not just a semester. To my first point, I never thought I would have such an enjoyable time trying to keep up with a man in his sixties speed walking through Oxford, England like a child at Disneyland; however, this was my experience studying abroad with Steve Beebe. While in Oxford, I enrolled in Steve’s course on C.S. Lewis and communication. The course took place throughout the city of Oxford at the landmarks where Lewis lived his life. As our teacher, Steve expertly orchestrated each class as a walking tour into the life of Lewis and accompanied these adventures with insider’s knowledge and access to primary sources such as Lewis’s own journals, correspondences, and handwritten manuscripts. These journeys reflected a passionate teacher eagerly sharing the connections he discovered between Lewis’s writings and communication research. Furthermore, class with Steve is an environment conducive to growth—both as a student and as a citizen of the world. From a pedagogical standpoint, he is an expert at providing constructive feedback in a way that emphasizes one’s strengths while discussing areas for improvement. I still remember his comment on my term paper that, admittedly, was disorganized in its thoughts. His response: “This paper is like a building. It has the bricks needed to be something great, but it needs more mortar to bring the ideas together.” Not only did this critique help me as a writer during that class, but it has shaped how I structure the manuscripts I submit to academic journals. To my second point, since encountering the landmark that is Steve Beebe, my life has only changed for the better. He has guided me through the difficult decision to leave the corporate world and pursue my dreams to become a professor and he has guided me through difficult personal decision as well. Like any great landmark, you find yourself returning periodically and often leave with a greater sense of perspective on life. Steve is my landmark to whom I return when I need perspective. I am thankful to have him in my life as a landmark to which I can turn. Steve Beebe is truly the greatest teacher and one of the greatest human beings I have ever known and I wholeheartedly endorse him for this prestigious award. Sincerely,

Colter D. Ray
