• Moses Austin was granted permission to start a colony in Texas by the Spanish - empresario

• Mexicans gained their independence from Spain and the land grant became useless

• Stephen Austin got permission from the Mexicans to continue with the colony but new rules were added

The Beginning of the Revolt

• Americans did not like following Mexican laws (especially anti-slavery)

• The Mexicans began to crack down on the Americans

• Austin Went to Mexico City to meet with Santa Anna

• Troops at the Alamo were led by William Travis

• Troops consisted of 183 volunteers

• Their job was to delay the Mexicans so Houston could raise an army

• After attacking for 12 days Santa Anna sent in 1,800 men

• All of the Texans were killed except for Susanna Dickinson, her child, and a slave

Battle of San Jacinto

•Santa Anna attacked the Texans by the San Jacinto River

•In 18 minutes the Texans killed half of the Mexicans

•Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign a treaty

•Texas was now independent

• Texas asked the United States to annex them–The US did not want to disrupt the balance between free and slave states

–The US also did not want to anger Mexico
