Dear TABC Members, I hope your 2018 is off to a great start for you, your family, & your team. The district races are heating up as the temperatures have cooled off. Hoops for Hope - Texas Style TABC would again like to encourage our members to send us any news on activities in which your teams participate involving raising funds in the fight against cancer and other diseases. We have called our coordinated effort Hoops for Hope – Texas Style in order to include the many causes for which you raise money. Many schools have hosted fundraisers to provide as-sistance for, or in honor of, local teachers, coaches, students or residents. Some have mirrored the NCAA Coaches vs. Cancer efforts where both opposing coaches wear basketball shoes during their game. Others have hosted “Pink Out” events which have raised funds for “The Cure.” Please send TABC news and pictures you have from your events during the season. They serve to give you and your team recognition for your efforts and also to give others ideas on how they might be able to help as well. Keep up the good work and let us hear about it.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017 the Meridian La-dy Jackets hosted the Hamilton Lady Bull-dogs in a pink out game to honor our Warrior Darcy who lost her battle to can-cer on October 3, 2017. We raised mon-ey through t-shirt sales generously dis-counted by GandyInk

out of San Angelo. Donations were procured at the game and there was a silent cake auction as well. Head coaches Stephen Heers and Jill Kendall would like to thank all of those who donated, over $1200 was raised for St. Jude in honor of Darcy Raye Cassidy.

Texas Basketball Has an International Impact

Brian Hannas is a former TABC board member who won a state championship at

Everman. He is currently the head girl’s coach at San Antonio Christian. The follow-

ing is his story about his recent trip to Costa Rica:

Our Church took a mission trip to Liberia, Costa Rica and shared the game of bas-

ketball and the love of Jesus with the kids in the city in a move called Impacto

Costa Rica. We did a basketball camp and served and shared the Gospel in the

neighborhoods throughout the city the week of Jan. 1-7, 2018.

The second to last pic is of the Costa Rican u15 National team. We have devel-

oped friendships through the game of basketball over the past three years and it

continues to grow as ambassadors. The last pic is of me and the National team

coach during our trip.

Offering a story of the impact of basketball: We all speak the language of

Hoops!

TABC in association with the Texas Athletic Directors Association is again offering complimentary membership to Texas Athletic Directors, Principals and Superinten-dents. Many of these people are former coaches and friends of basketball. We wel-come them and would like their input on how we can help their basketball programs. If your administrators would like to join TABC, all we need is their e-mail address so they can receive our newsletter and a mailing address where we can send their mem-bership card. Please share this information with administrators. We would like to say welcome to those who have already joined. We appreciate your support.

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches presently awards eight-een $500 scholarships to graduating seniors connected to basketball in the state of Texas. As more funds become available, the number and amounts of the scholarships will be increased. Many of you have players who have gone on to lucrative careers either as either profes-sional athletes or as business leaders. Many of them would welcome an opportunity to give back to the sport that has influenced their lives in such a positive way. Please contact your former players and let them know about the tax exempt TABC Education Fund. To contrib-ute, please make checks payable to the TABC Education Fund, Inc. and mail them to:

After 36 years in education, Richard “Rich” Delgado is retiring from the Aldine ISD. Rich coached basketball for 17 years at Aldine HS with eleven as the varsity boys coach. After a stint as transpor-tation director he has served the past seven years as the Athletic Director for Aldine ISD. A retire-ment reception will be held January 24, 2018 at the Campbell Center (1865 Aldine Bender Rd, Hou-ston, TX, 77032) from 4:30-6:30 PM. Come join Rich in reliving his coaching and administrative ca-reer. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dallas A+ Academy entered their second year of UIL participation after a rocky start in 2016-17. Playing in the same district with the defending state champion, Dallas Madison, the Knights started the year with a young team and a new coach after their 0-24 inaugural season. Coach Michael Thomas has A+ playing hard and entering the district 11-3A race they are 8-7. Michael ‘s dad is a longtime TABC member (Calvert, Denton, Lewisville) Henry Thomas, who still coaches at Gainsville State School and his sister A’Trayviya Thomas who is the head girls coach at Corsicana. (See the next story) ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Brooklyn Thompson of Corsicana girls has had three double-doubles so far this season but the one against Dallas Samuel before the holidays was by far her best. Brooklyn scored 31 points to go with 21 rebounds in the Corsicana victory. Her coach is A’Trayvia Thomas, mentioned in the previous story. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dekaney’s boys are off to a great start thanks to lots of help from the Peavy family. Currently ranked #4 in class 6A, the Wildcats (20-3) are coached by David Peavy and point guard DJ Peavy is his son. Younger brother Micah Peavy is a 6’7 sophomore forward. In a recent district game against Spring, Micah had 25 points and nine rebounds plus five dunks including an alley-oop slam on a pass from his older brother. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Stan Leech of Boerne Champion HS recently became the fourth San Antonio area high school coach to reach 800 career wins. Stan passed the milestone at the Canyon Lake tournament in early December. He now joins three basketball legends and as the only active coach among them could move up the career victory ladder. Joe Cortez of St Gerards had 823 wins, Wayne Dickey of Sam Houston 837 and Charlie Boggess of Alamo Heights leads the San Antonio area with 915. Nice company Coach Leech. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Doug Scott passed away on November 28 at age 75. After graduating from Dallas Samuell he coached there for 38 years and after retirement he was a substitute teacher until his death. His brother Steve coached at Dallas Hillcrest and another brother Mike was an official. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Reginald Seastrunk, girls head basketball coach at FW Southwest, recently lost his battle with pan-creatic cancer on December 17 at age 50. The Skyline graduate played football at North Texas Uni-versity and was an assistant football coach as well as varsity girls’ basketball coach at Southwest. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Coaches are recognized for career wins and championships but their importance to any school often shows up in other ways as role models, teachers and lifetime mentors for their players and students. Sometimes it can even be a lifesaving situation. On the morning of January 10, 2018 at San Antonio Reagan High School, a varsity basketball player collapsed on the gym floor unable to breathe and with no heartbeat. Varsity boys coach John Hirst and trainer Joe Martinez jumped into action. Us-ing CPR and the AED (automated external defibrillator) the two men were able to bring the student back while the ambulance was on the way. The player will continue to be monitored and tested but he is alive and was released after a defibrillator was installed internally. Coach Hirst and Trainer Martinez said they didn’t have time to realize the gravity of the situation until afterward. Congratula-tions to both for paying attention while being trained and for being where they were supposed to be. Friday January 10 was a great day at Reagan HS no matter who won the game that night. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Riley Halloran of Conroe HS girls is normally the kind of player who looks to pass first, shoot second as the Lady Tigers strive to make the 2018 playoffs this season. In a recent game against Mont-gomery she was doing exactly that when after several attempts she realized everyone was covered. With her team down by two points, the clock winding down, the rest of the team was screaming for her to shoot. So to the delight of her coach Tamisha Houston and her team mates she lofted a game winning buzzer beater from the dead corner. Conroe 49, Montgomery 47. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

El Paso Burges coach Paul Guttierez has a steady left right combo thanks to the Newton fami-ly. Senior Jawaun Newton is one of the state leaders averaging 29.2 points per game and younger brother Tristen, an eleventh grader is averaging 26.2 points per game. That is why the Mustangs are currently 20-2 and # 9 in class 5A.

TALK

One of the advantages of TABC being a member of the National High School Basketball Coaches Association is the networking of the executive directors from each state association, who meet annually in the summer to share ideas on how to improve. Most of the Executive Directors are current or retired bas-ketball coaches who continually promote the game. Greg Grantham is the Ex-ecutive Director of the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association and re-cently sent some links to an article and three videos that are worth reading and watching. The article contains interactive video and the video links include di-agrams and additional links to other video resources.
