I also launched the Andover Gazette in September 2007 with a circulation of 10,000. This brings the number of Gazette magazines published to five, reaching half a million households each year.
Advertisers have the benefit of our free in-house design for their advertisements by a professional artwork and graphics team.

Welcome…to the April edition of the Test Valley Gazette. At last the clocks have gone forward, and with the increasing daylight at this time of year there always seems to be a general brightening of moods as well as increased optimism. Let us hope that this is reflected in all aspects of our
lives as we all strive to make the best of things.
The Test Valley Gazette is delivered to 35 villages between Andover, Romsey and Salsibury which has recently increased due to the feedback from readers.
Our magazines are printed in a factory that is FSC® & ISO 14001 certified. Sustainable and environmentally friendly printing is part of our ethos. Using vegetable-based inks and recycling nearly 100% of our paper waste means you can be confident that this publication isn’t harming the planet.

Sorry Twinings. But we really didn’t see this one coming. In last month’s article about Andover, www.yoursoapbox.com wrongly stated that Twinings had ceased production at its plant in Andover, it appears that this is not the case.
It seems that they really didn’t wish to get into a war of words with the national newspapers regarding the much-publicised, and apparently exaggerated, number of job losses when much of the company’s non UK manufacturing business relocated abroad, so YSB was as much in the dark as most Andoverians.
However, upon reading one of our last articles, the company contacted us to set the record straight, once and for all.
And to be fair, a recent visit to their Andover plant has shown YSB the extent of the operation at what is still the International Headquarters for Twinings/Ovo.
According to a spokesperson at Twinings, job losses in total amounted to just 129; however, actual redundancies were 76, and of those redundancies, all bar one were volunteers (i.e. when asked, they expressed a preference to leave with a redundancy package).
All in all, 505 people are still employed here at Andover, 150 of these in tea production.
Twinings insist that they’re here to stay: this year alone, they have invested over £6 million on new machinery, improved their production infrastructure and updating their technology.
The Andover plant produces tea for the UK market and they create a whopping 10 million tea bags per day here.
Twinings have been producing tea for over 300 years, moving out from London
to base themselves here in Andover back in the 1960s.
And they still produce 100 different types of tea here in Andover for the UK market.
So, as we now understand, Twinings is a robust company, contributing significantly to the local economy and community.
Again, YSB would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Twinings for this error in one of our articles in the last edition of ‘The Test Valley Gazette’.
Phew! I’ve worked up a real thirst with this article.
Put the kettle on, I could murder a cup of tea. Twinings, of course!

ESTABLISHED IN 1978 by Alan Drummond, Drummond Heating is a family run plumbing and heating business based in Romsey, Hampshire.
Growing up on a Southampton estate as one of 11 children in a three bed house, life could have turned out very differently for Alan and his brothers.
Leaving school at just 14, Alan began work on Southampton Docks to support his parents.
After a short stint as a motor mechanic, Alan met his wife Diane and was given the opportunity to retrain as a heating engineer, before setting up Drummond Heating at age 24.
Brothers Robert and Tony Drummond joined the business in 1981, followed by their sister Rosemary in 1994.
A Real Family Aair
Children, Christopher (28) and Heidi (29), are now also part of the team and hope to continue their father’s success.
With over 100 years combined plumbing and heating experience, this is a family led rm that you and your family can depend on.
SINcommitment to evaluating its programmes has grown exponentially; between 2004 and 2010, more than 95 external evaluations were commissioned under the EPG framework (Figure I). These formed the basis of the Meta-Evaluation
Reports, produced annually by ACF-UK, representing some one of the most systematic appraisals of the organisations’ performance. Evaluations have also played
A key role in strengthening the evidence-base for new and innovative areas of ACF intervention, including

Method -Firstly, grease and line with parchment two 21cm (8”) sponge tins. Into a large mixer bowl, sift in the cocoa powder, flour and baking powder. Using another bowl (heat-proof glass or stainless steel) melt the chocolate and butter together over a pan of hot, but not boiling water. Using a food processor, puree the cooked beetroot and then whisk in the beaten eggs. Now add the chocolate/butter mix and the beetroot/egg mix to the mixer bowl with the dry ingredients. Using a mixer, beat the combined mixtures together thoroughly on a slow speed. Then pour the mixture, half & half into each tin. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 180˚C (160˚C fan)/Gas Mark 4 until when a knife
inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave the cakes to stand in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out on a wire rack to cool. To make the filling, beat together the mascarpone, butter and icing sugar. Spread on top of one of the cakes and place the other cake on top so that the filling is in the middle. Finally, make the ganache to go on top. In a pan, bring the cream to just boiling and remove from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate and beat in vigorously until well combined and smooth. Allow to cool slightly, then spread on top of the cake. Leave to set. Decorate with some white chocolate shavings or a decoration of your choice.

A Panda’s LamentI’m a little panda, and my keeper’s very vexed,
He’s convinced I need a girlfriend; says it time that I had sex, He’s palmed me off with Chi Chi and it’s all a dreadful strain,
She’s come from deepest China, she can go straight back again, Her hygiene is appalling, and her markings are a fright, Us pandas are particular, it’s not just black and white,
This match making is bothersome; it makes me very blue. I just don’t want to reproduce, I’d rather eat bamboo.

Employers and potential employees need to take note of a change in the qualifying period required for unfair dismissal laws to apply. New unfair dismissal laws, which mean employees cannot qualify for the right until completing two years’ of service come into effect on 6 April 2012. However, the new regulations will not be applied retrospectively, so employees starting work before 6 April 2012 will continue to be able to claim unfair dismissal after only one year’s service. This could mean employers delaying recruiting new employees until after 6 April.
Says Shaun Underhill a Partner at Winchester based solicitors Shentons “The extended qualifying period has been brought in to kick-start the UK’s employment markets, in the hope that it will lift the red tape burden faced by employers.”
A n n o u n c i n g t h e doubling of the qualifying p e r i o d i n O c to b e r , B u s ines s S ec re ta ry Vince Cable said that businesses have told the government that unfair
dismissal rules are a major barrier to taking on more people.
Shaun Underhill comments: “The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills claims the aim of the policy is to encourage recruitment and it does not believe that it is appropriate or necessary to apply it to those already in work.”
If you feel you may need advice Shentons Solicitors and Mediators can advise you on the latest law in this field. Call Shaun Underhill on 01962 844544 for further information.

It doesn’t take long for those dreaded little words “How is your baby Sleeping?” to come up in any given parent-to-parent conversation. Some parents dodge the question by saying everything is fine and some dive into a long story of their child’s sleep habits and their ultimate frustration.
I am a mum of three beautiful daughters and have a wealth of firsthand experience of what it is like to endure months on end of sleep deprivation. With my eldest, it went on for years instead of months, my second was slightly better, and by the time daughter number three came along anyone would have thought I’d have known exactly what I was doing and have a dream sleeper on my hands, right...? Wrong!
The sad fact is I didn’t know what to do because no-body had ever really told me anything about how to get my babies to sleep through the night! When pregnant, I avidly read the books given to me by the doctor about pregnancy and birth, when my children were born I put into practice everything in the booklets the health visitor gave me about nutrition and health – I knew how many teeth they would end up with and when they should sit up, walk, talk,.... you name it, I read it! The thing severely lacking in everything I was given was any information about something so incredibly important to all of our health, well being and happiness as simply getting a good nights sleep.
I had a dreadful sleeper in daughter number three. I was exhausted, depressed and literally at breaking point, I felt like a terrible mum and snappy, irritable wife, its no surprise to me that recent research shows that mums are far more likely to suffer from post-natal depression if their children sleep badly! I remember so well one night I spent , under a blanket, on my daughter’s bedroom floor. For 5 hours I lay there, getting any rest I could, with my arm through the bars of the cot rested on her back to ‘help’ her sleep. The next day I was so exhausted that I almost crashed my car, putting my whole family in danger, I decided there and then that something had to change!
After much scouring the internet, the next day, I found Canadian, world renowned sleep expert Dana Obleman, and incredibly with her help and guidance within literally four nights my daughter, who for nine months had never slept more than 2 hours at a time, was sleeping 7pm – 7am straight! This transformation had such a massive impact on my life that it made me passionate about educating other parents and giving them the tools and support they need to achieve the same wonderful nights of sleep that we still enjoy four years on. I was lucky enough to be able to go to Canada and train personally with Dana to become an Infant and Child Sleep Consultant, and now help local families achieve real results, fast.
I would like to share with you the 7 biggest tips to getting your baby to sleep well.
1. Babies need to learn to fall asleep on their own without any external props. Props come in MANY forms, from dummies to feeding, to patting, rocking ,music, cuddles and many more. If your baby is reliant on one or more to
fall asleep then they will need it each and every time they wake in the night (which we all do at least several times a night briefly!)
2. Be consistent. Whatever is happening at one sleep situation needs to be happening at all sleep situations to send a clear message about what is expected, and that incudes every time your baby or toddler wakes in the night.
3. Early bedtime. This is vital to ensure that children do not become overtired. When a person is overtired, it becomes more difficult to settle down and fall asleep. When sleep does come, a person is a lot more restless with more tossing and turning and more night time waking. Try to pick a bedtime somewhere between 6 and 8pm based on last nap of the day and your babies age. Bedtimes do not have to be set in stone, you can always move bedtime a bit earlier if your child seems tired or cranky – just try not to make it later.
4. Routine. A bedtime routine is something you can start at a very early age and is an excellent cue to the body and mind that it is time to settle down and get ready for sleep. Routines should last from 20 – 30 minutes and at least some of it should take place in the childs room. Your routine might include a bath, pyjamas, feed and maybe a song or book.
5. Naptime routines. A short nap routine can help cue your baby’s body and brain that it is time for a nap. It need only take 5 minutes or so and might involve pulling the curtains in baby’s room together or saying goodnight to some toys in the room, then a short cuddle and a song.
6. Exhausting your child will not make them sleep any better! Skipping naps or late bedtime will affect the next 24 hour cycle. Do not let anyone tell you that naps are not important, or that skipping them will help your baby sleep longer at night.
7. Keep baby awake whilst feeding. If you are feeding your infant in the night try not to let him/her fall asleep at the breast or bottle. Keep feedings low key and quiet.
The latest research shows that 84% of children who are experiencing sleep problems will continue to have them for up to 5 years. This is a very long time for a family to function on a reduction of sleep and a long time to fight bedtime battles. It is never too late to start changing your child’s sleep situation. It can be hard but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel and in the long run making changes will make everyone feel better and well rested and, in my experience, a whole lot happier!
If you need support on your journey to great sleep then I can help you develop a customised sleep plan for solving your child’s sleep problems and help you step by step whilst you implement it so if you have any questions about what you’ve just read, please feel free to get in touch. For more information please go to www.babysleepthenight.com, or you can always call me directly on 01794-341172 to discuss how I can help you achieve real results, really fast.

Dear Friends, A great and frantically busy beginning to spring here at Cruise In. For a start, we’re proud to announce Cruise In is now selling - with immediate effect - cruises on the ultra luxurious Oceania Cruises line. This is big news for us, and perhaps for you! Oceania have a fleet of four vessels. Two of them, Regatta and Nautica are the the same size as Azamara Club Quest and Journey, ships which some of you may know. Oceania Cruises also have two brand new vessels carrying just 1250 passengers, Marina and the about-to-be-launched in May 2012, Riviera. These ships rate higher than any other mid-sized ships. At Cruise In we rate them both 5-star luxury - if not 6-star! - simply the best in the world! Cruise In, as we may have told you - and if we haven’t, we should have done - has a strict ‘quality’ policy. We will, as a matter of principle, only book you on ships and cruises we’d want to go on ourselves. That’s why we sell only 4-Star and upwards. And take our word for it, we’d all be on Oceania ships next week if we could spare the time! Take a look at the article featured and you’ll see what we mean. Not only are the ships amazing, the prices are unbelievable! Pop in to collect a copy of our 16-page brochure dedicated to 2012 Oceania cruise offers. One thing is a definite, availability on these won’t last long! There’s big news too from Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Their 2013 departures from Southampton have now been announced. With cruises ranging from 2 to 16 nights and various Mediterranean and Northern Europe itineraries, you’re bound to find lots to tempt you. Especially as there are so many more no-fly options for 2013 as both companies are deploying an additional ship sailing out of the UK. And not only is Southampton port only a short journey for anyone living in the south, but if you book early, you can get free parking on selected sailings and up to £500 per stateroom discount! Be sure to register on our mailing list so you will automatically receive our full brochure next month. This will include all offers in detail. From everyone at Cruise In - Happy Easter!

On a grey half-term day we thought it would be a good opportunity to visit theIntech Science Centre and Planetarium. The centre, just on the outskirts of Winchester, is crammed with all sorts of hands-on science and technology exhibits – perfect for curious kids (and curious grown-ups too).
We unwittingly picked one of their two busiest times of the year (the other being the October half term) so the queue to get in took a good 20 minutes to get through. But because there are 100 exhibits across two large floors of space, even with so many visitors there we didn’t find it too crowded or difficult to have a go on anything once we were in.
Intech emphasizes the ‘hands-on’ nature of its centre and this is what makes it so much fun for the kids. They were free to climb over and play with all the exciting, colourful, noisy science exhibits.
My son’s favourite by far was the relatively new Air Stream Tube, where they held little parachutes over a powerful stream of air and when they let go it flew up a long tube and shot out the top ready for them to catch it again. I’m sure he and his friends could have stayed playing with this one for the whole visit. But when we managed to drag them away, they also played with aerated water to see what pumping air into a tube did to floating objects in the tube; created their own tornado by turning dials to make cross winds and up draughts; and built an arch bridge to climb over.
There were also periscopes and telescopes to look through; infrared cameras which showed what heat you are giving off and from what part of your body; and a table with beams of light and a selection of mirrors and plastic boards that you could move to show reflection and refraction.
To find out more about what other exhibits they have, take a look at their list here.
We were lucky to have a teacher who had been several times before with us who took over explaining the science to the kids, saving us a fair bit of reading! The centre is a popular place for school visits and their exhibits fit in with the national curriculum (there’s all sorts of resources on their website for schools).
We didn’t have time this visit to see a show in the Astrium Planetarium, but we plan to return to have a go next time.
The centre is open every day (except at Christmas) between 10am and 4pm. The cost for adults is £8.50, children £6 (under 3’s free), and a family ticket for two adults and two children is £26.10. That’s with gift aid, but you also get a voucher for the shop if you gift aid which is enough to get one of their many little goodies. You pay £2.20 extra for the planetarium, or for certain shows (those at the end of the day) you can pay £4.75 just to get into the planetarium without entering the main centre. There are also annual membership options.

If your child is aged between 6 and 16 and needs some help with core subjects like Maths and English, or simply needs some direct assistance with exams like SATS/Common Entrance/11+ /GCSE in those core areas, then help is now at hand via a new tuition centre now open in Andover. The centre is based at the Westmarch Business Centre, directly opposite the 24 hour Tesco Extra store, on the A343 Newbury Road.
The centre is jointly run by two fully qualified teachers, Bas and Emma Brown, who have over 35 years teaching experience behind them in both the primary and secondary age groups. Bas has, for the last few years, been a headmaster of two schools, so brings a wealth of educational and business experience to this new venture. Bas and Emma have three children of their own, one at University, and two of primary school age; as parents and teachers, they are very aware of how important confidence and success at school is for our youngsters, who will be entering an increasingly competitive world over the next few years.
Kip McGrath is an Australian company who have been enjoying success with their unique tuition centres, bespoke individualised education programmes, and resources, for over twenty five years in more than twenty countries worldwide. There are currently over 200 Kip McGrath centres in the UK, with a record number of parents deciding to give their children that little bit of extra help. One child described it as;
“A cool way to add to school.”
Thousands of children have benefited from this programme over many years and now, children in Andover and the surrounding areas can benefit too.
If you would like a Free Assessment for your child please call the centre, and speak to Bas or Emma, on telephone 01264 748 913.

Peter Jaques Teaches Painting and DrawingFor the last 25 years I have been painting pictures for a living. As an illustrator I have produced art for many different companies, including most of the large supermarkets. It is highly likely that your weekly shop has included packs with my paintings or drawings on! For instance, 10 years ago Sainsbury asked me to create a number of illustrations for their rice packs, and flatteringly, they are still in use today!
I have worked for countless other clients too, with the BBC, Hewlett Packard, The Post Office, Fortnum and Mason, Hitachi, Cunard and Barclays Bank being among the more famous of them.
Nowadays I concentrate on producing my own landscape and still life paintings, as well as accepting portrait commissions. At the same time I give art tuition to small groups of students, of all abilities, at my studio. My teaching concentrates on improving drawing, how to compose pictures, the use of colour, brushwork principles and advice on materials and media, as well as lots of simple ideas to help students improve.
This is all achieved in the very pleasant surroundings of an Edwardian farm in Quarley, near Andover. Carefully restored and converted, the farm buildings now house a thriving centre for the visual arts in North Hampshire called Project Workshops, www.project-workshop.co.uk. As one of 18 separate businesses, I have a light and airy studio to work and teach in, including sufficient room for a permanent display of my finished paintings.
But… back to the tuition. I find that many of my students progress quickly, and are very soon creating their own eye-catching and atmospheric pictures. Ultimately, I try to give people the tools and techniques to create a very important thing… their own art.
If you are interested in joining us, please call me on 07500-091169, or leave a message on 02380-270513. I look forward to hearing from you.
p e t e r Join a small class (2-4) for expert tuition in oil and watercolour at my light and airy studio near Andover. £12.00 per hour, two hour sessions weekly.

Start Spring with a visit to Hillier Gardens, Romsey, and be ‘Inspired By Nature’ in a variety of ways! Through the beautifully executed artwork on show in the Exhibition, as well as the expected gorgeous display of magnolias and camellias in The Gardens. This year marks the 7th Anniversary of this annual Exhibition, and features regular exhibitors Daphne Ellman and Ali Lindley, with Guest artist this year Richard Tratt.
Lovers of Daphne and Ali’s work often return year after year – an opportunity to buy, chat, or just enjoy the view! Newcomers may be amazed by Daphne’s attention to detail, her passion for nature’s textures making fur, feather and foliage come alive in her hands. Working mostly in acrylics, she loves their flexibility, amply rewarded by the exciting results achieved using different surfaces. She is a member of The Society of Women Artists, The Society of Floral Painters, and as a teacher, holds classes on the I.O.W. – her home, and on the mainland.
Ali’s looser flamboyant style, often with hints of detail and highlights of gold, is a perfect complement, and with ‘negative painting’ becoming an increasingly important element, her style is currently evolving. Honing her skills amidst bringing up a family, she is now able to devote more time to her other passion! And where teaching others has also become a very fulfilling part of her career. Ali is a member of The Society of Women Artists and The Society of Floral painters.
Richard, although having an international following, is well known locally for his love of depicting natural Hampshire landscapes in all their seasonal glory, mostly in oils, his preferred medium. He is a Member of The Society of Wildlife Artists, The Society of Botanical Artists, and his book ‘Butterfly Landscapes’, along with the ‘New Forest Painters’ – the Groups’ own book, recently published, will also be available….completing this professional trio of colourful talent.
Originals, Prints and cards by all the artists will be on sale, and if you have a commission you want to talk about, arrange a demonstration for your own art group, ask about classes or a workshop, then go along and see them.
Exhibition Admission Free • Open Daily 10am - 5pm. Can be visited on its own but normal entrance
fee applies to the Gardens. Refreshments at Hillier’s Restaurant.
