some information about the book

When the book appeared in 1891, Thomas Hardy was one of England's leading men of letters .Tess is considered quite scandalous. Some people attacked Hardy for the novel's subtitle, "A Pure Woman," arguing that Tess could not possibly be considered pure. Today, the novel is praised as a courageous call during Victorian time The novel was one of Hardy's last. He was deeply wounded by some of the particularly personal attacks he received from reviewers of the book.

Brief Introduction of the Story Tess is a pure and beautiful woman. Her life was

totally changed from her loss of purity. She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, In order to get rid of the past ,she decided to go to a distant dairy farm. Then , she met her true love. She fell in love with Angel. After Angel knew the truth, he left Tess. And she sacrificed for her family, being a lover of Alec. Alec had always told Tess that Angel would never come back so he won Tess’s trust. Angel did come back and found Tess! Everything was too late! Then , Tess was desperate. She killed Alec and she was sentenced to death.

She is a kind, sensitive and intelligent girl. Angel said she was the daughter of nature.

Although she lost her purity for knowing little of man ,I still think she is pure, she is that girl she used to be and she is full of sympathy and love . I really love this lovely girl.

What Cause the Tragedy

Tess’s tragic life is caused by that society and it’s the result of that time. Except this, it can’t be separated from her own weakness in character. She obviously has the dual nature of the society character--- resistance and compromise. But,compromise is the winner.As a common person, Tess fought with the society helplessly. In the end, she turned out to be the sacrificial victim of society .
