Nikola Tesla Exhibit:Commemorative
Typographic Portrait

Concept Statement
Background/ Client:Considered a “mad scientist” by the end of his career as an inventor, electrical and mechanical engineer, Nikola Tesla led a prolific life that provided significant contributions to the 2nd Industrial Revolution. His inventions were often ahead of their time or overshadowed by Thomas Edison. However, his discovery of alternating current (AC) became the North American standard in the early 20th century. To commemorate Tesla’s patents and contributions, SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention (formerly the American Museum of Radio and Electricity) is offering a new electric-ity exhibit. The centerpiece of the show is a dramatic 9-foot Tesla coil that generates a miniature lightning storm. Yet the display needs a unique image of Tesla to help tie the show together and give the audience a visual of the man behind the machine. Target Audiences:Since the museum is open to the public, my Tesla type portrait will be displayed for educational purpos-es. Families, students, tourists and more specifically travel writers and journalists will be viewing the type portrait as part of the exhibit. Objectives:The audience should leave the show with a better understanding of who Tesla was and the foundation he laid for American engineering and electricity. The type portrait is filled with his quotations, theories, patents and inventions that form his face and this will give the viewers an idea of his contributions in a unique way.
TitleObstacles:My text portrait of Tesla is meant to be an informative visual of the Tesla’s brilliance. Since the text is morphed and overlapped to show difference of value, the viewers may not get as much information from the portrait alone and may have to venture further into the exhibit. Thus, the piece is meant to be a complimentary part of the whole Tesla exhibit. Also at the conclusion of his life, Tesla was considered incred-ibly esoteric by the mainstream. He symbolized an alternative to not just Thomas Edison, but also other scientists such Guglielmo Marconi, Heinrich Rudolph Hertz and Mahlon Loomis. Audiences may want more information about other scientists that contributed to American engineering as well.
Key Benefit:Although Tesla was a Serbian-American, he still provided the corner-stones for alternating current that soon became the North American standard for the transmission of electricity. And like many ambitious immigrants that acquired American citizenship, he contributed to the framework of modern day America. The audience should associate Tes-la’s image with a feeling of patriotism and strength in American engi-neering.
Support Statements/ Reasons Why:As Tesla’s background and career becomes more widely acknowledged and appreciated by the masses, he won’t be considered secondary to Edison, but simply another contributing genius that helped develop America into what it is today. He will be celebrated as one of the domi-nant minds in American industries and with presence of the Internet to spread information, his many U.S. patents and inventions will be appre-ciated by the mainstream.
TitleTone:The Tesla text portrait will have a powerful, direct, educational tone.
Media:The Tesla image will be a commemorative poster that provides iconic visual aid for the SPARK muse-um’s electricity exhibit.
Creative Considerations:Since this Tesla image will be a type portrait and not just a reproduction of his face, the text that cre-ates the piece will consist of Tesla’s theories and quotations with a focus on his patents and inventions. The font used will be American typewriter to emphasize his contributions to American engineering and electricity.

Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven by a power obtainable at any
point of the universe. This idea is not novel. Men have been led to it long ago by
instinct or reason; it has been expressed in many ways, and in many places, in the
history of old and new. We find it in the delightful myth of Antheus, who derives
power from the earth; we find it among the subtle speculations of one of your
splendid mathematicians and in many hints and statements of thinkers of the
present time. Throughout space there is energy. Is this energy static or kinetic! If
static our hopes are in vain; if kinetic — and this we know it is, for certain — then it is
a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery to the
very wheelwork of nature.“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the
human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain
unfolding to success... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love,
everything.”“Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his
work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really
worked, is mine.”“Like a flash of lightning and in an instant the truth was revealed. I
drew with a stick on the sand the diagrams of my motor. A thousand secrets of nature
which I might have stumbled upon accidentally I would have given for that one which
I had wrestled from her against all odds and at the peril of my existence.“Before I put
a sketch on paper, the whole idea is worked out mentally. In my mind I change the
construction, make improvements, and even operate the device. Without ever having
drawn a sketch I can give the measurements of all parts to workmen, and when
completed all these parts will fit, just as certainly as though I had made the actual
drawings. It is immaterial to me whether I run my machine in my mind or test it in
my shop. The inventions I have conceived in this way have always worked. In thirty
years there has not been a single exception. My first electric motor, the vacuum
wireless light, my turbine engine and many other devices have all been developed in
exactly this way.”“The gift of mental power comes from God, Divine Being, and if we
concetrate our minds on that truth, we become in tune with this great power.
My Mother had taught me to seek all truth in the Bible.”“If Edison had a needle to
find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine
straw after straw until he found the object of his search. I was a sorry witness of such
doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per
cent of his labor.”“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human
heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to
success... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.”
