Teachersarerolemodelsfortheirstudents.Assuchweneedtobeawarethatoureverydaydecisionsandchoicesnotonlyimpactfuturegenerationsandtheirabilitytoliveonthisplanet,butactasanexample.Bothmembersoffacultyandstudentsareencouragedtosetgoodexamplesofsustainablebehaviour.Tothisend:

*Shareideasinclassandtrytodemonstratesustainablebehaviours.Itisdifficulttobe“green”inourmodernworld,butsmallstepsaddup.Pleasedonotbullyothersforfailuretocomply.Rather,encourageandmodelsustainablebehaviours.

reusablewatercontainerandfillingitwithtapwateristhousandsoftimescheaperandmoresustainable.Thebottlingofwaterhasveryundesirableenvironmentalimpactsandisalsoregardedasthecommercializationofaresourcetowhichallpeopleshouldbeentitledtofreeaccess.

OverviewoftheTESProgramTheTeacherEducationStream(TES)isdesignedforstudentscommencingtheirundergraduatestudieswhoareconsideringapotentialfuturecareerineducation.TheTESprovidesarangeofexperiencesthatwillhelpyougainapracticalandtheoreticalfoundationineducation,aswellastosupportapplicationstoaB.Ed.program,followingyourundergraduatedegree.TheTESiscomposedof3.5creditswhichyouwilltakeaspartofyourundergraduatestudies:

• EDUC1010HandEDUC1020H:UnderstandingTeachingandLearning• EDUC2010HandEDUC2020H:ConceptionsandDispositionsinTeachingandLearning• EDUC3010H:LearningandLiteracy(orStudyAbroad)• EDUC4010H:TopicsinMathematicsEducation

andEDUC4020H:ASTEAMDrivenClassroomAdmissiontotheTESProgramNormally,studentscommencetheTESprogramatthestartoftheirundergraduatestudiesatTrent.Asmallnumberofstudentsmaybeacceptedastransferstudentsintotheprogramattheendoffirstyear(moreinformationisprovidedontransferringintotheprogramlaterinthisHandbook).GeneralinformationaboutapplicationandadmissiontotheTESprogramcanbefoundatthefollowinglink:https://www.trentu.ca/education/programs/teacher-education-stream

TheTESandYourUndergraduateDegreeAllstudentsintheTESProgramaresimultaneouslyenrolledinanundergraduatedegree(suchasaB.A.oraB.Sc.).Youmustcontinuetomeetallrequirementsforyourundergraduatedegree,suchasdeclaringamajorandmeetingtherequirementsforthatmajor.TherequirementsoftheTESprogramdonotreplacetherequirementsofthedegree.TheTESisnotadegreeprograminitself;theTESisratherasupplementtoanundergraduatedegreethatconstitutesanexcellentpathwaytoaB.Ed.degree,tobetakenfollowingthecompletionoftheundergraduatedegree.Followingthatpathway,studentswillrequire4yearsfortheundergraduatedegree(alongwiththeTEStakensimultaneously),andthen2yearsfortheB.Ed.degree,foratotalof6years.

KeepingContactwithYourAcademicAdvisorItisimportanttounderstandyourresponsibilitiesintheTESprogram.However,asindicatedabove,youmustcontinuetomeettherequirementsofyourundergraduatedegreeduringtheTESprogram.Assuch,westronglyencourageyoutocontinuetomeetwithyourAcademicAdvisorasrequired(usuallyonceperyear).ThissupportisthebestwayofensuringthatyouaremeetingallnecessaryrequirementsforboththedegreeandtheTESprogram–theAcademicAdvisorsareveryknowledgeableaboutbothofthese.

TaughtcoursesThepurposeofthetaughtcomponentoftheTESprogramistomakesurethatyouhaveasolidunderlyingtheoreticalframeworkappropriatetocontinueontoaB.Ed.programafteryourundergraduatedegree,andthatyouhavetherequiredprerequisitesfortheB.Ed.Assuch,sinceapplyingtotheB.Ed.requiresdifferentprerequisitesdependingonwhetheryouareinPrimary/Junior(P/J,KindergartentoGrade6)orIntermediate/Senior(I/S,Grade7to12),itisimportantforyoutobefocusedonyourintendeddirectionduringyourtimeintheTES.NormallyadecisiononwhetheryouareworkingtowardP/JorI/Sshouldbemadebytheendofyourfirstyear,asthiswillaffectyourcourseselectionsfortheremainderofyourdegree. RelationshiptoYourDegreeProgramTheTESisNOTadegreeprogramitself,inthesensethatyouwillnotreceiveadegreecalled“TeacherEducationStream”.Yourdegreeprogram,usuallyaB.A.oraB.Sc.,isnotaffectedinanywaybyyourpresenceintheTES.Therefore,asyouproceedthroughthatdegree,itisimportantthatyoucontinuetomeetallrequirementsofyourdegree,andnoneoftheTESrequirementsdiscussedherearemeanttoreplaceyourdegreerequirements.HavingtheassistanceandsupportofanAcademicAdvisorinordertoaccomplishthisishighlyrecommended.TeachablesToclearupacommonmisconception,pleasenotethattheterm“teachables”refersONLYtoIntermediate/Senior(I/S)requirements.TeachablesdonotapplytoPrimary/Junior(P/J).ForthoseinI/SwhointendapplyingtoTrentforyourB.Ed.,youneedtobecertainthatyourundergraduateprogramwillgiveyouthenecessarycreditsfortwooftheteachableareasofferedbyTrent,onceyougettotheleveloftheB.Ed.program.The12teachablesubjectscurrentlyofferedbyTrentare:Mathematics,Biology,Chemistry,Physics,FirstNation,MetisandInuitStudies,English,Geography,FrenchasaSecondLanguage,History,VisualArts,DramaticArts,andHealth&PhysicalEducation.AcommonmistakeforpeoplewhoareconsideringdoingI/Sistopresumethatothersubjects(suchasPsychologyandSociology)mustbeI/Steachables,becausetheyremembertakingthesecoursesinhighschool.Manylow-enrolmentsubjectsinhighschoolsaretaughtbyindividualswhodonotactuallyhaveacertificationasateachablesubjectinthatarea.IfahighschoolonlyoffersoneclassperyearinLaw,forexample,theschoolwilllikelynotbeabletohireapersonwithateachableinLaw,andwillinsteadgivethecoursetoapersonwithotherteachables.Asaresult,Trenthaschosentofocusonprovidingasetofteachableoptionsthatareinstrongdemandintheschools.ItisimportanttokeepthelistofteachablesaboveinmindifyouareconsideringapplyingtoTrentforaB.Ed.inI/Steaching.OtheruniversitiesmayofferateachableinSocialStudies–General,whichincludessociologyandpsychology,butTrentdoesnot.CreditsforIntermediate/Senior(I/S)TeachablesCoursesthatservetomeettherequirementforeachofyourtwo“teachable”subjectsarenormallyallofthosecoursesthatareofferedbyaspecificdepartment(i.e.courseslistedas“ENGL”arenormallythosethatareacceptedformeetingtherequirementsforanEnglishI/Steachable).However,youshouldpayspecialattentiontoanynotesintheuniversity’sAcademicCalendarregardinganunusualstatusforspecificcourses.Forexample,coursessuchasPHYS2091H,whichwascreatedtosupportstudentsworkingtowardselementaryteaching,arenotedinthecalendaras

NOTmeetingtherequirementforadegreeinphysics.Likewise,suchcourseswouldnotcountascreditforanI/Steachableinthatsubject.Pleasecontactusifyouareuncertainofthis.

Cross-listedcoursescanbeacceptedascreditsforeitherofyourteachableareas,buttheycannotbedouble-countedtowardstwodifferentteachablesatonce.Across-listedcoursemustbedesignatedtomeetoneorotheroftheareas,andcannotbe‘split’betweentwoareas(a1.0creditcoursecannotbesplit0.5/0.5betweentwoteachablerequirements).

Threeteachableareas(Health&PhysicalEducation,DramaandVisualArts)areavailableintheB.Ed.programatTrentdespitetheuniversitynothavingundergraduateacademicdepartmentsineachoftheseareas.Assuchtherearenocourseslistedexclusivelyforeachofthesesubjects.However,thereareanumberofcoursesofferedbyotherdepartmentsthatservetomeettherequirementsofeachoftheseareas.ThelistsofcoursesacceptableforapplicationtoTrent’sB.Ed.programineachareaareavailableontheTESpageoftheuniversity’swebsite(https://www.trentu.ca/education/programs/teacher-education-stream).StudyAbroadTheStudyAbroadprogramisofferedtostudents,normallyintheirthirdyearofstudy;withintheTESwefullysupportandencouragestudentengagementinthisprogram.Beingabletotakeallofyournewlearningaboutlanguageandcultureintoaclassroomisawonderfulthingforyourfuturestudents.TheTESprogramfullysupportsthisoption,andexemptionwillbegrantedforEDUC3010Hforstudentswhoopttopursuethisopportunity.FurtherinformationabouttheStudyAbroadprogramcanbefoundathttps://www.trentu.ca/studyabroad/AboutthePrimary/Junior(P/J)&Intermediate/Senior(I/S)LevelsandChangingLevelsWedonotkeeparecordofwhetheryouareworkingtowardP/JorI/S.Itisyourresponsibilitytoknowwhichisyourintendedlevel,andtomakesureyouaremeetingtheneedsofthatdivision.Pleasecontactus(oranAcademicAdvisor)ifyouareunsureofwhetheryouareontracktomeettheneedsofyourintendedlevel.

SinceyouarenotofficiallyrecordedasbeingP/JorI/S,youcanmakeachangebetweenthetwolevelswithoutneedingtoregisterthatchangeanywhere.Itisassimpleasdecidingthatyouareswitchingyourtargettotheotherlevel.However,itishighlyrecommendedthatyouconsultanAcademicAdvisorortheTESCoordinatorbeforemakingsuchachangeinyourintendedlevel.Thespecificsofyoursituationwillinfluencewhetherthischangeisfeasibleornotatagivenmoment.Generallyspeaking,thefurtheryouhaveprogressedintoyourdegree,theharderitistomakesuchachange.PleasenotethatonceyouhavecommencedaB.Ed.program,changingbetweenP/JandI/Sisnotpossible.ThinkingAhead:LookingDowntheRoadatYourQualificationsBesidesmeetingthebasicrequirementsoftheTESandtheprerequisitesforgettingintotheB.Ed.program,beingaproactiveteacher-to-be,youmaybelookingaheadatfutureoptionsandpossibilities.Thefollowingpointsrelatetothekindofinformationthatyoumightfindusefultoknownow,sothatdowntheroadyoudon’thavetosay,“Ionlywishsomeonehadjusttoldme…!”

OptionsOutsideofClassroomTeachingMostpeopleintheTESprogram,andlaterintheB.Ed.program,areplanningtobecomeK-12classroomteachers.However,therearemanyoptionsineducationbeyondthestandardK-12classroom,includingsuchpathwaysasresearch,adulteducation,workingwithanNGO,teachinginaFirstNations,MétisorInuitsetting,teachinginaninternationalschool,etc.Trent'sSchoolofEducationencouragesourstudentstobeopentothemanyexcitingpossibilitiesthatbecomeavailablethroughacareerineducation.YourtimeintheTESprogramisagreatspacetobeginexploringsomeofthesealternativepathwaysifyouwishtodoso.Pleasecontactusifyouwouldlikemoreinformationaboutpursuingyourownuniquepathtoeducation.

FrenchQualificationsforIntermediate/Senior(I/S)ToteachFrenchattheI/Slevel,youshouldmakeFrenchoneofyourteachableareas.TeachingFrenchImmersionattheI/SlevellikewiserequiresthatyoumakeFrenchoneofyourteachableareas(withtheotherbeingthesubjectthatyouwouldmostlikelybeeventuallyteachinginFrench).

FrenchQualificationsforPrimary/Junior(P/J)ToteachFrenchattheP/Jlevel,theprocessisdifferent.YouneedtofollowallthenormalproceduresforworkingtowardsP/Jasdiscussedabove,andwhenyouareeventuallyinyourB.Ed.degree(oranytimethereafter),youcantakean“AdditionalQualification”(AQ)coursecalledFSLPartI,whichwillgiveyouthequalificationtoteachP/JFrench.PleasenotethatwhileentrytoFSLPartIinmanyuniversities(includingTrent)doesnotnecessarilyrequireundergraduatecoursesinFrench(aproficiencytestcanbeusedinstead),itishighlyrecommendedthatyounonethelesstakeundergraduatecoursesinFrench.WhenyoueventuallyapplytoteachingpositionsinFrench,notonlywillthosecourseshavestrengthenedyourabilityinFrench,buttheywillalsoservetoindicateyourlong-termseriousdedicationtoFrenchasadiscipline.

AdditionalTeachingDivisionsSomestudentsintheTESprogramareinterestedineventuallyestablishingcredentialsinmorethanthestandardtwoteachingdivisions.WhileeveryonewillcompletetheB.Ed.withtwodivisionsonly(atTrenteitherPrimary&JuniororIntermediate&Senior),therearecoursesthatareavailableafteryoucompletetheB.Ed.thatcangiveyouathirdorafourthdivision,calledAdditionalBasicQualifications(ABQs).ForthosewhoarepursuingtheP/Jdivisionnow,pleasenotethataddinganIntermediateorSeniorABQcredentiallaterwillrequiresomeprerequisitecoursesinspecificteachableareas.Assuch,ifyouthinkthisisaneventualroutethatyoumightconsiderpursuing,itwouldbewisetotakeanumberofcoursesinaspecificI/Steachablearea(typically2.0or3.0credits,butthiscanvary).MoreinformationonTrent’sABQcoursesisprovidedhere:http://www.trentu.ca/aqcourses/prerequisites.php.Forthoseinterestedeventuallyinthepossibilityofschoolleadership,pleasenotethatobtainingaprincipalshipqualificationinOntariorequiresthreeteachingdivisionsasoneoftheprerequisites.ForthosewhobeginwiththeI/S,andwhowishtoaddPrimaryorJunior,youwilltypicallynothavethesameissuewithprerequisitesforanABQ(itisgenerallyeasierforanI/SteachertoaddPorJthanitisfortheP/JteachertoaddIorS),butyouareadvisedtoconsultaspecificcourse’sprerequisitesifthisinterestsyou.

ExtraTeachablesAllI/SindividualstakingaB.Ed.willcompletethatdegreewithonlytwoteachablesubjects.However,justaswiththediscussionaboveregardingdivisions,youcantakeAdditionalQualifications(AQ)coursesafteryourB.Ed.toaddanotherteachableifdesired.Butthatcanonlybedoneifyouhavethe

necessaryundergraduatecreditsinthatteachable(thenumberwillvary,butusually2.0or3.0credits,dependingonwhetheryouarepursuingIntermediateorSenior).Therefore,planningaheadforyourundergraduateprogramnowisagoodidea,ifyouthinkyoumighteventuallywantathirdteachable.

PlacementsAllplacementsintheTESmustbeapprovedbytesadmin@trentu.capriortotheplacementcommencing.RequirementsPlacementhoursareanintegralcomponentofeachoftheeducationcoursesstudiedaspartoftheTES.Youwillaccumulateatleast36hoursinyear1,36hoursinyear2,18hoursinyear3and36hoursinyear4.Astheseplacementsareanintegralpartofthetaughtcourse,thehourswillneedtobecompletedalongsidethetaughtcomponent.

YoumaynothavemorethantwoplacementsinthesameschoolororganizationduringtheirtimeintheTESprogram.Ifyouwishtoreturntoagivenlocationforathirdorfourthplacement,itwillnotbeconsideredanapprovedplacementforthepurposeofTESprogramcredit.Westronglyencourageyoutoseekavarietyofdifferentsettingsforplacements.Therationaleforencouragingseveralshorterplacementsinarangeofsettingsistwo-fold.First,itwillallowyoutoexplorearangeofdifferenteducationalsettingswhichwillhelpinformandshapeyourfuturedecisionsaboutyourcareerasaneducator;andsecond,theeventualB.Ed.applicationwillrequirediscussionofarangeofeducationalexperiencesindetail,havingseveralshorterplacements,ratherthanonelongone,willbemoreconducivetothispurpose.

LocationandTypeofPlacementsAllplacementsmustbeeducationally-based.Therefore,itisnotenoughthatitbeagoodvolunteerexperience(suchasfundraisingforagoodcause).Itmusthaveaclearaspectofyoubeinginvolvedintheeducationalprocess.AtleastoneplacementinYears1,2and3mustbeinaschoolsetting,equallyatleastoneplacementneedstobeinacommunity-basedorganizationorothernon-traditionaleducationalsetting(ie-somethingotherthanaregularPublicorCatholicschoolclassroom).Youmayworkwithindividualsatawiderangeofagelevels.Volunteeringinadaycaretoworkwithyoungchildrenindirectedlearningactivities,forexample,wouldbeappropriate.Likewise,attheotherendoftheagespectrum,volunteeringinaretirementhometoreadtoresidentsorparticipateinotheractivitiesthatservetobenefitresidentscognitivelyisequallyacceptable.Coachingateam,workingwithskate,danceorswimmingprograms,helpingleadatheatricalprogramforchildren,etc.,allconstituteotherexamplesofgreatplacementchoices.ThereisalongerlistofpossibleideasforlocationsontheTESwebsite.

Formstatesthislimitationexplicitly;incasesofuncertaintyregardingspecificactivities,pleasecontacttheTESCoordinator.

AvoidingConflictsofInterestThehostprofessionalonaplacementcannotbeafamilymember,orapersonal/familyfriend.Suchasituationwouldbeaconflictofinterest.Itisokayforthesupervisortobesomeonewhomyouhavepreviouslyknowninsomeofficialcapacity.However,iftheyaresomeoneyouwouldconsiderafriendofanytype,thentheconflictofinterestwouldinvalidatetheplacementresult.Similarly,atthetimeofyourplacement,youcannotbeonthepayrollofyourhostorganization,evenifyouarenotgettingpaidspecificallyforthattimeperiod.Itisokayifyoupreviouslyworkedforanorganization,aslongasyouremploymentrelationshiphasbeencompletelyseveredatthetimeoftheplacementbeingarrangedandundertaken.Inthecaseofdoubt,pleasecontacttheTESCoordinatorwithdetailsregardingthesituation.Ifyouareanemployeeofthehostorganization,andsimplywishtodeclarethatyouwillnotbepaidfortheperiodoftimeoftheplacement,thisisstillaconflictofinterestandwillinvalidatetheresultoftheplacement.

ProfessionalismonPlacementWhenyoutakepartinaplacement,youarenotonlyrepresentingyourself,butalsotheSchoolofEducationandTrentUniversity.Weexpectyoutopresentyourselfaccordingly,withutmostprofessionalism.Hereare8basicrulesofprofessionalismtohelpguideyouindoingso:

ProfessionalBoundariesCloselylinkedtothefifthpointlistedaboveistheconceptofprofessionalboundaries.Respectingprofessionalboundariesmeansthatyourrelationshipwitheveryonearoundyouonplacement,andespeciallywithchildren,needstobekeptstrictlyprofessionalatalltimes.Donotcall,email,textorcommunicateprivatelyinanyothermannerwithstudents/childrenwhoareapartofaplacementsetting.Thisincludesfriending,taggingorotherinteractionsonsocialmedia.Donotmeetprivatelywithstudents/childrenoutsideoftheprofessional/schoolsetting.Donotgivechildrenarideinyour

vehicleunderanycircumstances.Thisallappliesequallyafteraplacementisover;asaprofessional,youareexpectedtocontinuetoobservecertainnormsofbehaviour,evenafteryouhavedepartedfromaprofessionalsetting.

Ifyouaredoingaplacementinahighschoolsetting,itispossiblethatthestudentsyouwillbeworkingwithmayonlybeacoupleofyearsyoungerthanyou;itisessentialtorememberthatalloftheseprofessionalguidelinesapplyequallyinthatcircumstance.Theagedifferenceisirrelevant;asaprofessional,youareinanauthorityposition,andyoumaynothaveanyconnectionorcontactwithstudentsthatmaybeperceivedasbeingoutsideoftheboundariesofappropriateprofessionalcommunication.

FailuretoobserveprofessionalboundariesappropriatelymayresultinastudentbeingremovedfromtheTESprogram,beingpermanentlybarredfromenteringtheteachingprofession,andinseriouscasesmayresultinlegal/criminalconsequences.

ExpectationsonPlacementsThespecificperformanceexpectationsduringaplacementaretieddirectlytothedutiesoutlinedonthePlacementProposalForm,whichhasbeenagreeduponbybothparties.Assuch,theexpectationswillvaryfromoneplacementtoanother.However,thePlacementEvaluationFormalsooutlinessomegeneralprofessionalismandcommitmentexpectationsthatweexpectofallTESstudentsonallplacements.

WhattoTakeAwayFromPlacementsThemainpurposeoftheplacementsistoaideinyourdevelopmentasaneducator.Assuch,itisimportantthatyouundertakeeachplacementinathoughtfulandreflectivemanner.Thequestionthatshouldunderlieeveryplacementexperienceis,"WhatamIlearningaboutmyselfthatIcanusetobecomeabetterteacher?"Eventheverybestteachersarealwayssearchingforwaystoimprovetheirteaching.Byusingthissameapproachofputtinganongoingfocusonimprovement,youwillgraduallyseeyourskillsandunderstandingofteachingtakingshape,aswellincreasingyourconfidenceintheclassroom.

SubmittingaPlacementEvaluationFormAttheendofagivenplacement,youareresponsibleforensuringthatthehostprofessionalfillsoutaPlacementEvaluationForm(availableontheTESwebsite),includingthenumberofhourscompleted.ThecompletedandsignedPlacementEvaluationFormneedstobebroughtindirectlytotheSchoolofEducationoffice,orascan/[email protected].

Beyondthat,theotherimportantaspectthathostprofessionalsshouldbeawareofpriortothestartofaplacementisthatitisyourresponsibilityashostprofessionaltoverifythestudent'sVSCorcriminalrecordcheck,aspertherequirementsofyourownorganization.Pleaseinformthestudentofanyspecificrequirementswhichtheyareexpectedtofollowinthisregard.

ThestudentisrequiredtonotcommencetheplacementuntilaftertheyhavereceivedpermissiontodosofromtheSchoolofEducation.Anyplacementcommencedpriortosuchpermissionbeingsecuredwillneedtobediscontinued(withoutcredit).

EndingaPlacementAsthehostprofessional,youhavetherighttoendaplacementatanypoint,ifyoubelievetheplacementisnolongerinthebestinterestsofyourorganizationand/oranymembersofthatorganization(forexample,thestudentsinaschool).

TransferringIntotheTESProgramStudentswhohavecompleteduptooneyearofanundergraduatedegreeareeligibletoapplytotransferintotheTESprogram.Astudentwhohasmorethan5.0creditsisnormallynoteligibletotransferintotheprogram;thereneedstobesufficienttimeremainingwithinastudent'sundergraduateprogramtoenablethestudenttomeetalloftheTESrequirements.ThosewhowishtobeconsideredfortransferintotheprogramshouldapplyviathelinkonMyTrent,whichwillbecomeactiveinFebruary.ForfurtherinformationyoushouldcontactourEducationEnrolmentAdvisorKathleenCrook([email protected]).

ProcedureandTimelinesfortheAppealofTermWork

1. Ifastudentisdissatisfiedwiththegradereceivedonawrittenpieceoftermworkwithinacourse,thenthestudentmustwithinoneweekofthegradedworkbeingmadeavailabletothemrequestameetingwiththecourseinstructorinwritingbyemail.

2. Thecourseinstructorwillschedulethemeetinginatimelyfashion.3. Atthemeetingthestudentwillprovide,inwritingandverbally,thespecificareasofthework

thatthestudentbelievestohavebeenincorrectlyassessed.

4. Assoonaspossibleandnormallywithinthreeworkingdaysofthemeetingthecourseinstructorwilladvisethestudent,inwritingbyemail,ofhis/herdecision.

5. Withinoneweekofthecourseinstructor’sdecisionbeingmadeavailabletothestudent,thestudentmayappealthatdecisioninwritingtotheProgramCoordinator.

6. TheProgramCoordinatorwillreviewtheappealanddecidewhetherare-gradeiswarranted.Whereare-gradeoftheworkisrequestedbytheProgramCoordinator,theProgramCoordinatorwillnormallyasktwoinstructorswithrelevantexpertisetoreviewthework.Whiletheoverallgrademaynotbeloweredasaresultofthisreview,theresultingmoderatedgradewillbetheaverageofallassessmentsofthework.

7. Themoderatedgradefromthatreviewwillbeprovidedtothestudent,inwritingbyemailfromtheProgramCoordinator,withinoneweekofthere-gradebeingassigned.There-gradedpaper,gradingrubricandcommentsarenotreturnedtothestudent.
