Sparkling and in demand Champagne is not just any old fizzy wine, but a place - and a very special place

at that. The Champagne region, an hour’s drive east of Paris, is one of France’s most comfortably

confident, devoted to producing one particular

luxury product

THEFRENCH TABLE

Alsace will always be an inspiration for The French Table in both

cooking and wine. Having grown up in the region, Thomas the chef has

always had a love for the wines from this area. The 9.5 hectares of vineyards surround the village of Mittelbergheim which is located

in the Bas Rhin about 30km from Strasbourg. The vineyards are owned

by Lucas Rieffel and his father André. Lucas took over the reins in

1996. Since the 2009 harvest the vines have been 100% organic

Huge quantity of mainly long-lived, medium-bodied reds and extremely varied dry whites. Bordeaux is France’s most important

weapon in the wine war. This large, south-western wine region, produces more AC

wine than any other.

Small, complicated region that delivers paradise in a bottle. Unlike France’s other famous

wine region Bordeaux, Burgundy is still a land of peasant

farmers. There could hardly be a greater contrast in social climate between Burgundy and

Bordeaux, France’s two premier wine regions. While most famous Bordeaux wine estates are large and centred on a grand château, Burgundy’s most famous vineyards are in the hands of the men who

work them.

Proper, red Beaujolais can be a delicious drink - quite unrelated

to red burgundy made further north. The only indisputably

successful wine made exclusively from Gamay grapes, it is often

relatively light-bodied with lots of youthful fruit and refreshingly

high acidity, although more and more ambitious producers are

making a denser, more Rhône-like wine. Most Beaujolais should on no account be kept and is good when

served lightly chilled.

France’s most varied, wine region. Outside northern France, the Loire, with

the exception of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, has been consistently overlooked by

modern wine enthusiasts. Try some of the less well known and you will be nicely surprised.

Concentrated, beefy red wines designed for ageing. The

northern Rhône produces small quantities of some very fine wine indeed, while the much more extensive vineyards of

the southern Rhône produce one of France’s ‘commodity’ wines, Côtes du Rhône, as well as a host of other wines based on

the Grenache grape.
