Abruzzo is located in central portion of Italy
Territory 65% mountainous 35% hilly countryside.
The surface area is 10794 Km2, while the population density is 124,4 ab./Km2

The main rivers: the - A t e r n o P e s c a r aand the S a n g r o e h ic h drain toward the Adriatic Sea, while the Lir i drains in the Tirreno.

L'Aquila is the capital of the region
Pescara is the most populated city
Chieti and Teramo are other provinces in the region

Prior seismic events in AbruzzoIn the months of January and Febuary there were various tremors (the most violent occurred Feb. 2), that had about 8000 victims.
1 3 1 9 15J a n u a r y ( 7 on the Richter scale), 9.238 victims; in the remaining rest of Marsica regions 20.000 victims for a total of approx. 30 thousand wounded. Most of the wounded were transfered to the hospitals of Rome and the “Casa Famiglia Regina Elena” hospitalized the orphans of the earthquake .

Epicenter was located between L’Aquila, Lucoli and Tornimparte.

April 6, 2009: the damages
Hundreds of buildings were either completely or partially destroyed
Thousands of buildings were declared uninhabitable
Municipalities mainly affected are about 20
L’ Aquila: the historical center was destroyed, Public Administration buildings were destroyed or rendered unusable.
In the town of Onna: 50% of the homes were destroyed, and 50% unuseable41 deaths, which was 12% of the entire population.
April 6, 2009: the response Emergency services were coordinated by “Protezione Civile” and the Italian Red Cross
Ambulance services “118” was organized through the Operational Headquaters of Teramo.
The Hospital San Salvatore was evacuated within 6 hrs of the onset of the tremors.
Realizzation of 2 PMA1 wqs run by ARES Marche, located near Hospital San Salvatore, operative after 22h1 run by Italian Red Cross togelther with the “118” of Teramo at Piazza d’Armi operative after 20 hrs.
Availability of emergency equipment offered by various volunteer Associations.
