Terps Recycle: 2019 Year in Review 2019 Recycling Rates: Glass No Longer Recyclable: 80.64% - Institutional Diversion Rate (includes construction & demolition debris) 46.49% - Individual Recycling Rate (Maryland Recovery Act (MRA) materials) During the summer of 2019, the processor of UMD’s recyclable material stated they will no longer accept glass. The economics and logistics of glass recycling has led many collection and processing programs, both locally and nation- ally, to stop accepting glass in the mixed recycling collections. UMD remains committed to our recycling program and we are researching opportunities to continue to divert glass from the landfill. In the interim, however, all glass products should be disposed in the trash/landfill waste bins. Compost Collection in Suites & Apartments: Begining Fall 2019, the opportunity to drop-off compostables became available for students living in campus suites & apartments. This program, developed by FM, DRL, and DRF, provides interested students with plastic collection bins that are saved from campus dining halls for reuse. The program suggests keeping the collection bin in the freezer to prevent odor or pests. Drop-off locations are now in the lobbies of Annapolis Hall and Leon- ardtown Community Center to serve students living in these communi- ties. The opportunity to compost is now available in 32 campus residence halls!
