Thursday-September 2, 2010 Athens, Tennessee (Feel free to copy, post or otherwise distribute) (Phone:746-1390 Fax:744-1390 e-mail: [email protected]) NATIONAL-WORLD NEWS LOCAL & AREA NEWS TM MORNING FAX Today's News...This Morning ♦ Forecasters say Hurricane Earl's effect on the Eastern coast will depend on when it makes its expected turn to the northeast. A later- than-expected turn could mean the storm's eye will make landfall on the extreme eastern tip of North Carolina as a Catergory 3 storm late Thursday or early Friday. Forecasters also say hurricane-force winds could reach New York's Long Island and Cape Cod in Massachu- setts. ♦ Stocks jumped Wednesday after reports of surprisingly strong growth in U.S. and Chinese manufacturing. The Dow Jones Indus- trial Average closed at 10,269.47; up 254.75 points. ♦ The nation's economic downturn has had an unexpected effect. The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped for the first time in 20 years as substantially fewer undocumented workers from Mexico, Latin America, and elsewhere are crossing the border in search of jobs. ♦ A radical enviornmentalist who took three hostages at the Dis- covery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland, while wear- ing what police say may be explosives was shot and killed by offic- ers. The gunman, identified as James Lee, was killed by police fol- lowing four hours of negotiations. None of the hostages were hurt. Western Sizzlin Steak House-1804 Decatur Pike (745-2626) Thursday (All Day) 8 oz. Sizzlin' Top Sirloin with Salad, Potato, Bakery, & Dessert Bars, $6.99. Enjoy the "Whole Thing" for lunch, $6.79. Stonehaus Deli & Bakery, 601 Madison Ave. (745-9116) Soup - Loaded Potato Soup. State Troop- ers will hold a series of checkpoints across the state. THP Colonel Mike Walker says their message is simple - zero tolerance. He says if you are over the blood alcohol content limit "you are under ar- rest." Troopers will hold a sobriety checkpoint this Friday evening on the Highway 30 bridge across the Tennessee River. A driver li- cense checkpoint will take place Saturday evening on Highway 39 at Wildwood Church in McMinn County and Monday evening at Highway 68 and Highway 304 in Meigs County. ♦ COMMUNITY NEWS YOU CAN USE: √ √ √ √ √ The Autism Support Group of McMinn County will meet at 7 p.m. today at Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, North Jackson Street, in Athens.
