PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Grade 6 Transition We held our annual Parent Information Evening last Wednesday night. I would like to thank all the parents, carers, students, teachers and family members for coming out and braving the elements. We had 138 families attend the evening and we enjoyed getting to know new families and catching up with families we have known for some time. I trust that Grade 6 students and their families were able to receive the information they needed and gather an understanding of the learning environment and learning opportunities for their child. We look forward to welcoming the Grade 6’s from our feeder primary schools to an activities day between 10:30am and 1pm on Tuesday 3 September. continued…... School Uniform
We know that the wearing of school uniform builds pride in the school. We have an expectation that
students arrive to school in full school uniform and leave school at the end of the day in full school
uniform, even if their last lesson of the day is PE. Thank you to all parents and carers for providing
students with the appropriate school uniform and enhancing our reputation in the community.
Red Faces Assembly
Our student leaders are busy planning for our Red Faces Assembly, which will take place during blocks
two and three on Thursday 5 September, starting at 10:45am. I know students and teachers are looking
forward to viewing the many acts. We encourage parents and community members to attend and enjoy
Red Faces with us.
2019 Satisfaction Survey
The 2019 Satisfaction Survey parent letters contained the following sentence in error:
“All feedback goes to the school principal in a report with no individuals identified, and with all comments exactly
as worded”.
This sentence should not have been included as the 2019 Satisfaction Survey does not contain an option
for additional comments and therefore principals will not receive a report of collated comments. Thank
you to all families who have completed the survey.

2019 GRADE 10 DINNER
The 2019 Grade 10 Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 December. The Farewell Assembly
will also be held on Thursday 19 December from approximately 9am - 11am. We ask that
students do not make any appointments until after 11:30am. The assembly is
compulsory, if students do not attend the assembly they will not be permitted to attend
the Grade 10 Dinner.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
LEVIES
Shortly, Latrobe High will be setting the levies for the 2020 school year. We are now approaching the
end of term three and would appreciate your attention to any levies that are still to be paid to the school
for 2019. Please note that the school offers a payment plan that enables the levies to be paid off over a
period of time. This is tailored to each family’s circumstances and can be as small as $20 per
fortnight. Please contact the school with your proposed payment plan so we may formalise the
agreement. It’s important to note that this will avoid the debt being monitored by the Department of
Education’s Finance Services.
GRADE 8 REPORT
As we cross the half way mark of Term 3, Grade 8 students have been experimenting with their creative
sides, as well as engaging in the hands on subjects offered here at Latrobe High School. Students have
produced some phenomenal pieces of art, poetry, storyboards and more in both basics and personal
interest classes this term. It would be remiss of me if their creative efforts were not showcased to the
rest of the school as well as our school community. Please see below for some of the outstanding work
being produced by Grade 8 students.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child please do not hesitate to contact Savahn Overall
Term 3 is well on the way and students are productively working through their learning programs. A few
weeks ago, I reminded the Grade 9 students about our school values and challenged them to continue to
improve themselves with these in mind. The big ones that I mentioned was that I would like all of the grade to
focus on positive relationships and resilience. With regards to positive relationships, I wanted all students to
ensure that their behaviour was promoting positive relationships, such as being kind and being inclusive. More
importantly, I didn’t not want to see behaviours that were working against building positive relationships such
as putting people down, intentionally isolating people from a group or being rude and unkind. I also mentioned
that resilience plays a big part in how we interact with others and how we feel about ourselves. I set a goal for
all Grade 9 students, that when there is an issue or drama, any contribution that is made is done in a positive
way or not at all. I also requested that students seek assistance from support networks such as your friends,
teachers, or the schools support services.
Looking at how students have started the term, I can see a real improvement in the areas that we were
focussing on. I congratulate the students who have made great grounds in building more stable relationships
and to those students who are being more respectful. It is very pleasing to see this change in environment, and has meant that we are seeing more positive interactions within our group. As a reward for this upward trend,
the Grade 9 students will be treated to 10 Pin Bowling on Tuesday 3 September. This time coincides with the
Grade 10 students going to Don College and the Grade 6 students visiting Latrobe high.
I am pleased to say, we are having a happier Term 3.
Thank you for reading.

On Tuesday 27 August, 23 Grade 10 students along with Ms Perry, Mr Lawson and Mrs Taylor
travelled to Burnie for dinner and a show. We went to watch the Shakespearean comedy ‘Much Ado
About Nothing’. But before the play started, we all went for tea in downtown Burnie.
The play was a romantic comedy filled with lots of humour and entertainment. It went over 2 halves
and had a 15 minute interval in between. The actors were amazing and it was a great opportunity to be
able to watch Shakespeare live. One of the actors in the production was Jett from Home and Away
(Will McDonald). That certainly had us paying a bit more attention.
Overall we had a wonderful time and now know that Shakespeare’s comedies are actually really funny.
Big thanks to Ms Perry for organising the event and to Bell Shakespeare for putting on the amazing
performance.

STUDENT WELLBEING SURVEY
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in
Years 7-10 will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing
Strategy.
The survey will be completed on the following dates during class time:
Grade 9 - Wednesday 4/9
Grade 10 - Wednesday 11/9
Grade 8 - Thursday 12/9
Grade 7 - Thursday 12/9
If you would like further information, please contact Fiona Heazlewood, Assistant Principal on 6426 1061.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to
flourish, so they can engage in learning.
‘BE YOU’ PERSONAL INTEREST CLASS
Be You is a new Personal Interest Class for Grade 7/8 girls that started this term. The name “Be You”
shows what the class is all about and how amazing it is to be your true self. It’s about girls realising
their own self-worth, improving confidence and self-esteem, building inner-strength and self-belief,
growing friendships, improving health and body-image, managing stress and gaining the tools essential
for living a happy, healthy and inspired life. So far this term we have been working on improving our
self-confidence and looking at ways to make us smile more. The girls identified areas they would like to
learn more about and also areas they would be happy to support and teach each other. This term we
have been learning to crochet, with the aim to complete a blanket to donate to the local nursing home.
Thanks to Mrs Lyn Butler for all her support. This is definitely a work in progress as lots of the girls
have never crocheted before. We were overwhelmed with the kind donations of wool and materials,
especially from Jane Rigby from “Sew” n “Sew” in Latrobe.
A few weeks ago we had Caity come in from GRLinPWR to take a Self-Love Simplified workshop. The
workshop is designed to help girls swap self-sabotage for self-love.
We loved having Caity come in and work with us for the “Self-Love Simplified” workshop. She was very enthusiastic, funny and kind and made us all feel relaxed as she was a great presenter. It was good to hear her
story and see how excited she is about doing something she loves. We learnt lots about ourselves and what
values we have and who influences us the most in life. We were all so different and taking the time to do
something like this made us realise how often we change ourselves to try and fit in with others. Using positive
affirmations like “I AM POWERFUL” really helped to make us feel stronger. We’re looking forward to opening
our letter to our future self. Thanks for putting a big smile on our faces Caity!

Last week we had Natasha Armitstead from The Don College take us through a session on hair care
and hair styling. Thanks Tash for coming over and showing the girls some new styles and letting us have
a play with the head forms and products. I loved seeing the smiles on the girls faces when they had
their done.
We’ve also had a visit from Lisa Evans our fabulous school health nurse. It was a great opportunity to
learn about all the different sanitary products available for women. Who knew there were so many
different options. There were lots of interesting looks on the girls faces when she spoke about
menstrual cups. The following is a great site to find out more information about them https://
