Principal’s Report – Term 4 Week 10 Presentation Day: Today is a day when we celebrate the wonderful achievements of all our students, whether they receive a specific award or not. We are very proud of all our students and know that each and every one of them excel in their own way. We look forward to seeing as many parents and family members attending the Presentation Assembly and sharing such a special day with us. A huge thank you to Ms. Isabelle Campbell and Di Atkins for their organization and efforts in making this assembly such an auspicious occasion. Canberra Excursion: Last week Stage 3, Ms Catlow, Ms. Jeffs, Mr. Delbridge, myself and our wonderful parent helper, Matt Pollock journeyed to Canberra for a four day visit to the nation’s capital. The excursion was a great insight into our HSIE Unit on Democracy, as the students were given the opportunity to witness and listen to parliament sitting in both the House of Reps and the Senate. We were also treated to a personal visit from our Farrer Member of Parliament, Mrs. Susan Ley. The War Memorial was a highlight for many students, as was the Australian Institute for Sport and the hands on activities at CSIRO. Our evening activities were based around fun and friendship. We are greatly appreciative of the PACER program which incorporates the Australian Government subsidising each student to the tune of $30-00, assisting in the overall cost of the excursion, along with the school’s own subsidised amount. According to the positive feedback, all students and adults had a great time, however they were ever so happy to lay on their own pillows and get some much needed sleep!! Step Up Process: Students will gather on Monday morning for their usual assembly. At the end of the assembly they will be organised into their new classes for 2019. Students and teachers will then commence movement of furniture and go about setting up their classrooms for an easy start to the new school year. Tuesday & Wednesday will allow for programs to be run with their new cohort and provide the students with time to become familiar with the students they will be learning with in 2019. This will also assist our students that suffer from anxiety and other challenges, allowing them to embark on the holiday period not worrying about what the new year will bring and who they will be placed with. Careful consideration has been given to class lists, all requests have been listened to and acted upon where necessary. Hopefully our carefully planned process will go as smoothly as possible. I thank you in advance for your support in this matter. A full school assembly on Wednesday afternoon will see the end of the 2018 school year, with students being dismissed at the normal time of 3:05 pm. Reports: Reports will be going home tomorrow (Thursday), so please check your child’s bag. Please make time to meet with your child’s teacher if a request for parent meeting has been made. If there isn’t a request and you would like to meet with the teacher, please don’t hesitate to contact the school and arrange a time. Have a great week! Julie Eason Relieving Principal

Stage 3 Canberra Excursion Last week Year 5 and 6 students visited Canberra. We left very early Tuesday morning and arrived back at dinner time on Friday. We had a very busy time, visiting lots of different places, such as the War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, Old Parliament House, the Electoral Commission and The Film and Sound Archives. We also went on an educational cruise of Canberra and ate fish and chips! The students really enjoyed Laser Tag and the trampolines, however they did really love the educational places too. They loved listening to the members of parliament debating on different issues and got to see some famous faces! A big thank you to Matt Pollock who gave up his time and accompanied the teachers and students on the trip as an extra pair of hands. We greatly appreciate all your assistance. Thank you to Mrs Eason and Ms. Campbell for all your organisation of our wonderful camp. Thanks also to the students your behaviour was fantastic. Below are some extracts of writing from students in 5/6C about their experiences. Ms. Catlow

Questacon – Mac Tresize

On the second day of our trip to Canberra, we went to Questacon, the fantasic Science centre, near new Parliament House. Before we walked into Questacon, I knew it was going to be a lot of fun and educational. I was star struck. All the amazing inventions were very cool to look at, so I headed straight upstairs to see everything! It was so cool upstairs, there was a model of the moon, a colour centre, an earthquake simulator and some lightning tesla coils. It was amazing with all the inventions and cool things there. I think Questacon was my favourite place in Canberra and I can’t wait to go again! I learnt a lot at Questacon, like how colour illuminate some minerals and also earthquake power.

Australian Institute of Sport – Kaj Huddle

AIS is a place where Australian people train for sport and it’s called the Australian Institute of Sport AIS is found in Canberra NSW and is located outside of the Canberra triangle. AIS symbol is 5 gold lines and has 4 buildings. One is a soccer field. There is a gift shop there. AIS has a basketball court, soccer field, volleyball courts, gym and swimming pool. I was built in 1981 because the Australian Olympic team didn’t do well at the Olympics. They got 4 medals, 3 bronze and 1 silver.

Continued…….

War Memorial – Martyn Currey At the War Memorial we learnt about all of the wars. It is located at the base of Mt Ainsley and in line with Parliament House. At the memorial you can read stories about people that went to war. One of the best features is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There are huge mosaics of soldiers and stained glass. Another thing is the roll of honour with all the names of men and women who went to war. The War Memorial was made for people to truly see what war was like and there are guns that were used in the wars. At the War Memorial you can go to the Discovery Centre and sit in the Helicopter or model submarine. On the trip I liked the big aeroplane called the land coaster. It dropped bombs.

Parliament House – Erika Glover Parliament House is a debating place for politicians, prime ministers, speakers and ministers. It is located in the heart of Canberra in a straight line with Old Parliament House and the War Memorial. Some of its features are the Senate, which is a red coloured chamber where things are debated. The House of Representatives is another chamber inside and there are books, a mace and lots of seats and microphones. There is no building like it with stairs of marble and unique rooms with a statue holding an Australian flag on the top floor. It’s special because it’s where laws are debated and introduced by important people. We learnt a lot about parliament and my favourite part was getting to be a speaker in the education room.
