Dear Parents and Caregivers
It is with great pleasure I present to you the last principal’s forward for 2014. This newsletter represents the culmination of our school year. It is a pictorial and written account of the educational and social activities that have been undertaken during term four.
We have tried to include as many activities, which have occurred this term and present a wide selection of the student’s written work. I hope you’ll have the pleasure in reliving some of the term’s highlights and enjoy the written commentary accompanying the activities.
Our education program has placed an emphasis on maintaining high standards in all areas of academic and social endeavour. A number of changes have occurred over the past three years in our educational program and the introduction of the Australian Curriculum is being phased in to increase consistency across the country. In general, the students’ attitudes and academic achievements this year have been highly commendable.
Many extra curricula activities were undertaken this term. Some of these include the following:

Bandanna Day
The Forrest Community raised $855.75 for CanTeen – an organisation that helps young people, aged between 12 and 24, cope as their world becomes a haze of cancer terminology, hospitals, treatment and uncertainty.
On 21 November Yr 10 students assembled at the College in their ‘posh frocks and glad rags’ and boarded the bus to AQWA - the Aquarium of WA and Function Centre at Hillarys Boat Harbour.
Year 10 Dinner Dance
The evening began with a quick tour through the aquarium and then upstairs to the function centre that overlooks the ocean. Students appreciated the food, soft drinks and the dancing.
Staff would like to acknowledge the good behaviour displayed during the night.

Getting ready for the workplace; “The Real Game”, resumes, letters of application, career planning, sanding furniture, cleaning toys, rebuilding bicycles, Bunnings Workshops, “Pass it Forward”, making Hangi, computer coding, visit to Scitech, designing 3D laundries and bathrooms, “What Would You Do?”, understanding DIY
instructions, learning effective strategies in chess, no Smoko times! It is what we are all about in the Junior VET class!
Learning so many skills and then using them to make useful goods and toys for underprivileged members of our community, has been a rewarding experience. It has been a wonderful year
for the Yr 9 Junior VET group. Well done to Amber and the boys! It has been a pleasure and an honour to be part of this program.

On Wednesday the 19 November, Kinross College held its first Health and Wellbeing day. The day was organised by Alicia Wills (School Psychologist), Julie West (School Nurse) and Joel Bond (School Chaplain) and took the form of a mini-expo in the Undercover Court. Students were issued a ‘passport’ and had half an hour to go around to the different stalls, where the staff would provide the students an answer to a question and a stamp for their passport. Once the passport was completed students would go into a draw for the chance to win a prize. We had ten agencies attend; North Metro Community Drug Services, City of Joondalup, Youth Futures, City of Wanneroo, ARAFMI, Sun Smart, School Nurses, Kinross College Student Services, Headspace and Youth Focus.
Feedback from the day was very positive with students reporting that they all found something out that they didn’t
already know or information on how to get support for themselves or a friend. A number of students identified agencies they would like to contact or activities they were going to engage in within our community as a result of the day. Staff were thrilled to see all our students engaging and interacting so positively
The prizes winners for the day were:
Year6: 3rd. Izzah Zulkernain 2nd. Taryn Salmond 1st. Aidan Little
Year7: 3rd. Lois Maynard 2nd. Jamie Porteous 1st. Juan Scheffer
Year8: 3rd. Hayden Morton 2nd. Rachel Anema 1st. Adam Jenkinson
Year 9: 3rd. Georgia Green 2nd. Zoe Clarke 1st. Grace McDonald
with the agency staff. Due to the success of the day, it is highly likely that it will occur again in following years and will hopefully be bigger and better!
As part of the College’s regular visits to the Amana Living Kinross Care Centre a number of Year 10 students visited the Care Centre on 4 November to assist the residents with their Melbourne Cup Day festivities. The students helped serving food and beverages and also joined in the celebration with the residents. A great time was had by all and the residents at the Care Centre thoroughly enjoyed the students’ visit, while the staff at the Care Centre appreciated the extra helping hands.

Living
The conduct of the students involved in the visits to Amana Living over the course of 2014 has been absolutely exceptional and it has been a pleasure to accompany them over the year and see them build relationships with the residents. I have had thirty five students in Year 9 volunteer to visit the Care Centre in 2015, so I am looking forward to seeing the relationship between the College and the Care Centre continue to grow and develop in the new year.

2014 has been an outstanding year for the English Department. The students have been engaged with amazing activities and lessons throughout the year.
The CARS and STARS reading program was introduced effectively to high school students and lots of fantastic teaching has taken place in regards to the Australian Curriculum. Our learning programs, for example, short stories, poetry, song writing and novel study, have explored themes and texts in depth, drawing in sub-themes and developing students thinking skills and guiding them to being able to make connections. We have had very pleasing OLNA and NAPLAN results which our students worked hard to achieve and they should be as proud of themselves as I am.
In addition to this, Yr 10 enjoyed an excursion to watch a production of Romeo & Juliet. A before school Reading Club was introduced for Yrs 7 and 8 and continues to grow in popularity. During the Easter break, a Holiday Skills program was run for Yr 8 and 9 students to reinforce skills learned during term time in reading, writing, grammar and spelling.
We have been implementing Explicit Teaching which involves directing student attention toward specific learning in a highly structured environment. It is a form of teaching that is focused on producing specific learning outcomes. Topics and contents are broken down into small parts and taught individually. It involves explanation, demonstration and practice. Students are provided with guidance and structured frameworks. Topics are taught in a logical order and directed by the teacher.
Another important characteristic of Explicit Teaching involves modelling skills and behaviours and modelling thinking. This involves the teacher thinking out loud when working through problems and demonstrating processes for students. The attention of students is important and listening and observation is the key to success. The Explicit Teaching model includes the following components: Warm Up, Introduction, I do, We do, You do, Plough back and Review.
I would like to wish our fantastic Yr 10 students all the best for their future endeavours and I look forward in hearing about your bright futures and what you accomplish in your life. Reach for the stars and you will achieve…
To those of you who will be returning for another year of learning, I say to you to embrace your time in school, take as much as you can from your experience of being at school to gain an education and learn from your teachers. Do not be afraid to ask questions because that is the way you learn. Reflect and consolidate your lessons learnt and step forward towards your goals. Believe in yourself as you can do anything you put your mind to.
Enjoy your break and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. I look forward to seeing you all in 2015.

At the end of year assembly, held on Wednesday 17 December, these students received awards in recognition of their achievement in Term 4.
This year I have had the pleasure of overseeing the fundraising endeavours of the Student Council. We have recently concluded our final fundraiser, which was a Christmas Appeal on behalf of Youth Futures, who work with homeless youth in Perth. As usual, the school community responded generously and we were able to pass on a substantial collection of goods to Youth Futures.
In addition to the donations for the Christmas Appeal, the student council raised almost six thousand dollars over the course of 2014. These funds were
distributed to the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association of WA, World Vision and Canteen. Congratulations to every member of the Council for your efforts in facilitating these fundraisers

Mr Davies, our Media & Photography Teacher has initiated a project to re-use, recycle and donate outdated or broken laptops that the College would normally dispose of.These computers no longer work on the Education Department’s computer network and had been ear-marked for disposal. A process was followed whereby charitable organisations here in WA were invited to tender for their purchase. These were declined.
Mr Davies thought this would be an excellent opportunity for students to get involved by helping to rebuild and clean up the computers. With student help, during recess, lunch and after school, Mr Davies collected and sorted through the laptops removing parts to salvage workable components.
New keyboards were built, hard drives were wiped clean, broken screens were replaced and all machines were physically cleaned, scrubbed and restored. Finally students tested the computers, batteries and power packs.
Some research was completed online to find a genuine orphanage in need of computers. Mr Davies used part of his long service leave earlier this year to transport these laptops to Indonesia. With the help of his friends travelling with him they managed to donate a number of laptops to the Street Kids Orphanage. Mr Davies is also endeavouring to maintain or fix computers which have been bought back to Perth by other travellers and friends of the orphanage.
Our World Challenge group has also gotten involved and they prepared another 14 laptops and took them to Mexico in their backpacks. Each laptop weighs close to 4kg and students will carry them whilst on their treck until they reach their remote location where they will be donated.
As a result of this, Mr Davies is trialling the loaning of rebuilt computers to Kinross College students, over weekends, to assist in completing computer/media tasks or other assignments. He is currently re-building more laptop computers and researching how best we could utilise old Apple Mac desktops.
We are all very proud of Mr Davies, our students and this very thoughtful initiative of his.

Ex student Jessica Hawkins wins Young Carer of the Year award 2014I was so proud to invite Jess back to College to speak to some of our Year 10s. Jessica has achieved amazing things since she graduated Kinross College in 2008. She is a qualified nurse and has spent a significant time working in palliative care and also cares for her mother. Jessica is currently working in the Emergency Department and studying for her masters in nursing and paramedic qualifications. Jessica spoke about motivation, commitment and goal setting. Her visit was rewarding for all and our students were amazed by the amount of work, study and achievement Jess has completed in just 6 years.
