Dear Pilgrim Families and Friends,

It has been another activity-filled fortnight in the life of our school. It was a pleasure to host the Little Wonders Playgroup from Seeds Uniting Church over four mornings. This is the ninth year this has been happening. The Oasis Kitchen was abuzz with little people and their carers busily cooking up a storm, with the help of some of our students from Years 5 to 7. We had many comments from the Playgroup carers expressing their appreciation for the assistance of our students, and how impressed they were by them. Well done to our Oasis building students! A big thank you goes to Kristen Heath for coordinating this annual event and to Karen Richardson, Playgroup Coordinator from Seeds Uniting.

A number of our students attended a very warm SACSA netball day last week. For the first time a boys netball competition was run and our team of Year 6/7 boys did very well. Most of the boys are proficient basketballers, so they had to rapidly adjust to the different rules!

Swimming lessons are being enjoyed this week by our Reception to Year 5 students at the SA Aquatics Centre at Marion and you can see some photos further into the newsletter. Parents are welcome to come and watch the lessons.

The recent Outdoor Campus Movie night was a great success. It was a very enjoyable evening, with families gathered on the COLA to watch ‘Paddington’. We are thankful to God for the involvement of so many parents in the life of the school and a special thank you goes to Misty Ridings and Kylie Porter who represent Pilgrim School on the Campus Events Committee. We greatly appreciate all who serve on various Campus committees and of course within Pilgrim itself!

Planning for 2019 has been well underway for some time, and we will have ten classes again next year. The class structure is listed below. Teacher and student class placements will be announced later in the term.

The Reception to Year 1 classes will be located in the new and renovated JP classrooms, where the Year 1 and 2 classes are now. The 2019 Year 2 classes will move to the current Reception rooms, which will be given a spruce up, including the purchase of some new furniture, ready for our Year 2s! Much time, consideration and prayer is given when determining the class placements of students. Social, emotional, behavioural and academic factors are taken into careful consideration by the staff.

Finally, we are very pleased to announce that Mrs Kate Tretheway will be our Indonesian teacher from the start of 2019. Kate is currently teaching Indonesian at Reynella South Primary School. We look forward to having Kate with us as a permanent staff member!

Stationery Sales

Students are able to purchase stationery throughout the year through the front office. Items like glue sticks, pens and pencils are provided as needed and the cost is noted for each student.

Late November an account will be sent home if your child has needed to purchase stationery during the year. Thank you for your assistance with prompt payment of the accounts.

SACSA SPORT

SACSA Netball Three teams were entered in the all day carnival on Wednesday 31st October 2018: Year 4/5 Girls, Year 6/7 Girls, Year 6/7 Boys. The students travelled to Golden Grove by bus for the carnival.

Little Wonders Playgroup

The Little Wonders Playgroup were invited to Pilgrim to make some delicious food. The Year 5, 6 and 7 students helped the children measure out ingredients, mix and make the different recipes. There was also a story time for the pre-schoolers. Thank you to Kristen Heath (Marketing) and Karen Richardson (Playgroup Co-ordinator) for organising these special visits, planning recipes and purchasing ingredients.

Commonwealth Bank School Banking - Term 4

Thank you to all our keen bankers who bank their pocket money on Wednesdays through the school banking program. Many students are getting into the habit of saving regularly and even some quite young students are writing their own deposit slips - we are getting quite good at deciphering backwards numbers!

Please make sure the slip is filled in and the amount matches the money enclosed. If you need a new deposit book or folder, just send us a note with your banking.

We will be processing the school banking every week including the last week of term, but keep in mind that rewards are taking at least two weeks to arrive at school, so any rewards ordered in the last 2 weeks of term are unlikely to arrive at school before the holidays. As far as we know only the scratch pad is out of stock, but having a 2nd preference is a good idea if you order something from previous terms.

A few reminders about reward tokens:

One reward token is earned for each deposit the child has made at school - unfortunately they won’t earn any for deposits made elsewhere.

The school banking system keeps a tally of each student’s deposits, so they won’t be able to pool tokens with siblings to get a reward. We try to remind students when they have earned 10 tokens, but if you’re wondering how many they have to go, just send a note to us with the deposit book and we will check.

The CommBank Youth app can be downloaded to keep track of your child’s reward tokens or account balance. It’s easy to use and fun for kids, with chores lists and savings goals.

Beck from Commonwealth Bank will have an information registration table near the year 5 classroom on the morning of Wednesday 14th November, when the 2019 Receptions have a transition visit. If you are wanting more information about school banking or want to register your child, please chat with her then.

If you have a spare 30 - 45 minutes on Wednesday mornings and you're looking to volunteer in our school community, we need a couple of trustworthy people with basic counting skills to join us. It's easy to learn (I'm no maths whizz at all!) so if you're interested please chat with us in the staff room from around 8:50 - 9:20ish on Wednesdays, or contact Bron on 0438 894 408.

Pilgrim Giving Manger

The Student Leadership Team have set up a Giving Manger in the front foyer for families to donate non-perishable food items to be given to families in need this Christmas. Please support this wonderful project by donating items such as: Cans of Food, Tins of Tuna, Dried Pasta, Rice, Biscuits, Tea, Coffee, Milo. The last day to donate is Thursday 13thDecember and all donations will be given to Westcare Mission.

Remembrance Day

A BIG Thank you to ALL our Campus Children for colouring and cutting out the poppies to be sent to the National War Memorial to be dropped from a veteran aircraft on Remembrance Day. There are approximately 2700 poppies in the box ready to be sent.

Campus students will gather for a Remembrance Day ceremony 10.45am, Friday 9th for 11.00am. Parents are welcome to attend. The memorial is next to the staff car park. Memorial pavers acknowledging the 93 servicemen and women from our area are being laid in readiness for the service.

Actual Remembrance Day is on Sunday 11th November at 11.00am (on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of each year). This year is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

National Parent Survey On Educational Issues

The survey is open to all parents and carers, wherever their child goes to school, as parents have many issues in common even if we educate them in different school systems. We are genuinely seeking to include as many perspectives and comments as possible, so we can properly reflect parent views in our advocacy and representative activities.

The survey should only take a couple of minutes to complete, but there are also several opportunities to add comments. All responses will remain anonymous.

insights Why developing empathy in

your child matters by Michael Grose

Parenting is a socialisation process during which parents develop in their children and teenagers the

skills and attitudes that will enable them to fit into the different groups they encounter. These groups

will exist inside the classroom, in friendship groups, during sports and leisure activities and elsewhere.

This socialisation process needs to begin from a young age.

Initially, most kids believe that their world and everyone in it revolves around them. “I want” is their

mantra. Patient, firm parents will continually remind children that they need to think of others. “It’s

your brother’s turn.””Nana doesn’t feel comfortable listening to that language.” “Think about how

your behaviour affects others.” These are the types of appeal to a less self-centred approach that

many parents make.

The socialisation process operates on two levels. On one level its focus is on teaching and helping kids

to follow social rules or conventions that exist to help them get along with each other. At a deeper

level successful socialisation develops empathy in a child or young person.

Empathy – the ability to understand how another person is feeling or how they respond to a behaviour or an event

– is the basis of all respectful relationships. Without empathy it’s impossible for someone to enjoy a

relationship based on respect and equality. It’s easy for a person who doesn’t practise empathy to reject,

bully, intimidate or hurt someone else.

Empathy learned in childhood carries on to adult life

Empathetic adults enjoy better personal relationships and experience less stress. They also make

better leaders who are more likely to get the best out of people than self-centred, result-focused

leaders.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that empathy, if neglected in childhood, can be difficult to develop in

adulthood. In some adults it takes a traumatic event or a ‘road-to-Damascus’ moment for them to adopt

an empathetic perspective.

So, rather than wait until adulthood, let’s focus on developing empathy in your children and adolescents.

There is a good chance they will benefit very soon in terms of enjoying better friendships, improved

wellbeing and more success at school. Here are five ideas to get you started:

1. Model empathetic behaviour. Be kind even though the person in front of you in that queue is slow.

2. Read fiction stories to kids or encourage them to read fiction. People who read fiction score highest

on tests that ask them to infer other people’s thoughts and emotions.

3. Praise kind and compassionate behaviours. The behaviours that parents focus on, even with teenagers, are those that tend to expand, so bring their empathetic behaviours to the fore.

4. Validate your child’s feelings. When a child shares difficult stories or emotions let them know you understand, without offering solutions or advice.

5. Invite your child to walk in someone else’s shoes. Occasionally ask your child a question like,

“What would it be like to be feel tall like Tanya?”

Empathy is too important to wait until adulthood so make it a priority to develop a sense of ‘other’ in your

child from an early age.
