TERM 3 NEWSLETTER

As we all look forward to warmer weather, fun activities and lots of action, the club is heating up too!

During June we had a visit from Mrs Margie Abbott and the Mayor of Warringah Mr Michael Regan. It

was an honour for MWGC to be presented with an Australian flag for recognition of our contribution to

sport.

Australian Champions Tahnee Wickham and Darcy Ridhalgh proudly received the flag from Mrs Abbott.

The visit was in acknowledgment of the success of all the teams who attended National Championships

in Melbourne and California.

WHAT’S HOT AT MWGC?

ON THE FLOOR

Plans are underway for a few changes around the floor with some new equipment and some further

improvements.

The girls will be getting 2 new sets of uneven bars to replace the old acromat sets and the boys will

have a new set of parallel bars. The new apparatus will be supplied by Jansen Fritsen, the same brand

used at the larger competition venues.

Budgets have also been set for some new and much needed boxes and mats.

Another bit of fun that has come out of the Woodward trip is the warm up dance. On Saturday

mornings at around 10.30am you will see 10 minutes of fun for the entire gym, hopefully everyone will

get in on the action.

Check out the recent video on our Facebook page—a whisper has it that Xiaoqing can really move!

Our coaches are wearing some great new MWGC gear. We’re working on having the gear available to

the members soon too!

THE DRAWING BOARD

Plans are being finalised for the new MWGC Gymshop proposed for the Crèche’ area.

At this stage we have interest from GK, Sylvia P, Active Fitwear and a few other suppliers.

The shop will stock clothing, gym footwear and most gym supplies including grips and loops.

THE NEW BELL HAS ARRIVED!

This idea came back from the Woodward

trip.

All new skills will be celebrated with a

ringing of the bell!

Everyone in the gym can celebrate the

success with a cheer.

Huge thanks go out to Manly Gymnastics

Physiotherapy and Briggs Marine for the

donations to make it happen!

WOODWARD CALIFORNIA TOUR

The tour was incredible.

Special thanks go to Deb Jarrett and her crew at Woodward West for helping to make this trip a reality.

So many new friendships found and life long memories.

We interview Lilly Habel and here are her thoughts.

‘”I loved the trip to America, it was so fun. Woodward was the coolest place. It had skating,

cheerleading and gymnastics. The gymnastics facilities were amazing. There were great coaches and I

learned a lot and came home with lots of new skills. My favourite part of Woodward was making

friends and learning from new coaches.

After Woodward, we explored LA, which was so fun and a great experience. We went to Universal,

Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and even saw the Hollywood sign.

I would really like to thank Sara and Donnie for doing a great job for taking care of us and also all the

coaches for making this amazing experience possible.”

To Corinne and Sara…A huge congratulations and thanks from all the Mums and Dads for your efforts

towards the fundraising.

Research is underway to try and organise a few of the US coaching teams at MWGC for summer clinics!

More info will be released soon.

MWGC wish to acknowledge and thank our tour sponsors,

Warringah Council, GK Leotards, Jedplumb, Vivid Property Services, Custom Finance, Yellow Brick Road

Dee Why and Ray White Real Estate Killarney Heights.

MEMBERSHIPS

At the half way mark of 2015 we had registered 2071 members. This is up from the same period last

year. Most of the growth has been through the under 5’s and new recreational opportunities which are

held outside the gyms busiest hours. We now have classes for most of Sunday and are looking at

continuing opportunities with extending for more under 5’s, schools and the disability program classes

to utilise all the available hours.

NEW CREW

A big welcome to our new coach Bogdan Nicolae Uruci.

“Bughy” will be working with the WAG team and also helping with a few other programs.

As a former Romanian elite gymnas and having coached recently in such locations as Dubai, he has lots

of experience to offer our club and the WAG girls.

Linda Jouault has also joined the administration team and already proving to be a great member of the

front desk team.

FAREWELLS

One of the true characters at MWGC has decided to leave for a new stage of her life.

Elsie Van der Saag has blessed us with her unique style for a few years and will be sadly missed.

From the entire team at MWGC we wish her all the best and hope to keep in touch.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Strong relationships have forged ahead within the local community. Warringah Council continue to

encourage and support our club with us receiving letters of congratulations from both the State and

Federal Governments.

As a part of our association with Dee Why RSL we are currently finalising a plan to provide a limited

number of complimentary passes to “adult gym” to support our returned soldiers who are battling with

Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. We are honoured to be a part of the new support strategy.

Huge thanks to Dee Why RSL for their continuing Sponsorship and the recent grant for the 2015-2016

year!

HIGH FIVES

Congrats go to Dominique Johnson, Kylie Massi and Sammy Wood for their outstanding results at the

World CrossFit Games in California.

Super Mum Kylie is now World Champion……..

FROM LISI’S TEAM

Lisi is working tirelessly on new plans to modify our phone system. We are conducting a review and

proposed changes will assist staff with incoming call management. Lisi wants to thank her team for all

the hard work and support.

FROM MARTINS DESK

Well we are already half way through the year and our squad gymnasts so far in 2015 have excelled

once again.

This year we have produced national champions in Tumbling and Men’s artistic gymnastics, as well as

having 4 gymnasts selected onto the National Squad to represent Australia later this year in New

Zealand. Congratulations Desnee Richter, who has carried a few injuries for a long time to make it onto

the team,

Our junior competitive gymnasts are currently working hard and preparing for their state

championships later this year. There have been some good results along the way, but still a lot of focus

required leading up to competition.

The club has just returned from an overseas training camp in L.A. Both the girls and the boys got to

work with some great coaches and learned so much. This trip will be on the calendar again in the

future.

A NOTE FROM IAN

As you are all aware our plan is to hopefully move to a new purpose built facility at the Aquatic Centre

site within the next couple of years. This is an extremely exciting time for MWGC.

Support for the project has been received from Local, State and Federal government departments.

More info on the project is available through the link on our website but right now we are waiting for

the Council to complete the Environmental assessment. We’ve been advised that this should be

completed by the beginning of August. As soon as this is done we will be preparing and submitting our

formal proposal. Hopefully by November we will be able to present our final proposal.

9000m2 of land has been set aside and approved for the use of a new indoor gymnastics and multi

sports facility and also indoor courts and associated uses. Our aim is to finalise MWGC’s application for

the use of a large part of the site!

We’ve also had confirmation from the owners of the building that we will be staying at Cromer until we

move. Final amendments to the existing lease are being presented for signing.

Special thanks to Melinda and Soren.

The new Board is working through some new structures and ideas that I’m sure the benefits of all their

knowledge and experience will follow through to the entire club.

We have gone from strength to strength over the past few years and none of it is possible without a

great team. My thanks go out to entire crew at MWGC.

I look forward to the new facility project challenge ahead & know that the team effort, not just

internally but from the community support, will be greatly appreciated & proudly embraced by all our

members & their families.

SKILLS and TIPS

Clear hip circle to hand stand (Boys and Girls)

A good hollow cast is essential to develop a good back hip circle.

The most common mistake is to throw the head back to initiate the hip circle.

Head should be kept neutral. Shoulders should be dropped back aggressively to initiate the hip circle.

To learn this skill, work on backward rolls to handstand on the floor with arms straight.

If this is not done correctly it will make it difficult to perform on bars.

Also,

Use a wedge in the early stages and always focus on the correct shape.

GOOD LUCK and WORK HARD!

MWGC always values and invites member input. If you’d like to lets us know what you’re thinking
