FROM THE OFFICE …. Thanks and Congratulations Spelling Bee… Congratulations to our team of Spelling Bees!! What a fabulous result in bringing home first place in all three divisions!! Well done to Declan Kilpatrick, Abbey Cooke, Matthew Schilling, Kirsty Noonan, Mackenzie Thomas, Rebekah Aynsley, Ella Cooke, Tabitha Roche and Hannah Morrell who attended the Spelling Bee hosted by York DHS this year!! Go Beverley!!! A big thank you to Anthea Cooke, Deane Aynsley and Mrs Corinna Thomas for your attendance on the day. Interschool Carnival…The Interschool Carnival was hosted by York DHS this year. We are so proud of the effort, behaviour and sportsmanship of our students who attended the carnival. Unfortunately the carnival was not able to be finished on the day, which was a little disappointing for our relay runners but overall the Beverley team performed to their very best and did our school proud! AIR Program… Our Artist in Residence Program has sadly come to an end, but what a fabulous way to finish off with the ART EXTRAVAGANZA!!! Thank you to Charlotte O’Shea and Jenny Broun for all of your efforts over the semester, the art produced was brilliant and the students learnt such a range of skills from you both. Thank you also to Corinna Thomas for your involvement in the application process and general running of the program. Without teachers’ enthusiasm for such projects our students would never have had this opportunity. Our ART EXTRAVAGANZA was a great success and a big thank you must go to our Year 2 and Music Specialist Ms Romola Brennan, along with Charlotte and Jenny. The parade and performances were great fun and the day was enjoyed by all. Health Forum… Our Year 8 – 10 students attended a Health and Well Being Forum hosted by our Beverley CRC for students in the Wheatbelt. Our students enjoyed the day immensely and took away some life skills for coping with difficult situations as well as gaining some perspective on what it means to have a meaningful life without conforming to the pressures of society today. The students also had the opportunity to participate in Noongar Sports on the day which was a lot of fun! Thank you to Mrs Sam Fricker and the CRC for all of their efforts in providing this opportunity for our students. News and Views Uniforms… We are very impressed with the number of students wearing full school uniform this term! If you require any uniform items, the P&C have recently sent out a uniform order that can be completed and returned to the school. Royal Show… If you are planning on some holiday fun at the Royal Show, please drop in to see some of our AIR Project art that is being displayed at the Show this year!!! Swimming Teachers… We are asking for expressions of interest for Swimming Teachers, for our In Term Swimming in Term 1, 2016. We require four qualified teachers from the 8 th – 20 th February. Beverley‘ParentConnect’

Beverley DHS Parent Connect is a new tool for keeping students, parents, teachers and the school community informed about activities, learning programs and administration matters at Beverley District High School. Parents who have provided the school with email addresses will begin to receive email notifications from the school with a subject line that begins New Notice or Connect Account Created from an email address called Connect Notifications. Some parents will have received these notifications a month or so ago, but might not have known what they were about.

These notices will begin to replace newsletter emails and some of the text messages that you have previously received from the school. You will be able to look back through these notices at any time by visiting the Connect website. You will be able to access calendars of events, newsletters, forms, timetables, excursion information and other resources through the Beverley DHS Parent Connect Library. The Library is accessible through a tab that you can click on the left of the home page. It has folders inside containing relevant documents which you can download. This is very handy when an excursion note goes missing! You will also be able to view photographs and see examples of student work, peruse the minutes of previous P&C and School Council meetings, and look at the School Report and selected policy documents.

To access all of this information, you will need to register with Connect. If you do not register, you will still receive emails, but won't be able to access the attachments or additional information in the Library such as excursion notes or newsletters. Once you have registered, you will follow a link to set up a password and can then visit the official Beverley District High School Connect Community and look for Beverley DHS Parent Connect in the Classes tab at the top of the page (it's not really a class, it's a site for parent information, but it's called a ‘class’ in Connect).

For the rest of 2015, we will just be using the Beverley DHS Parent Connect group for sending school news and information about whole school activities. Teachers will not be using this tool to tell you about your child’s learning programs yet. During 2016, each of the primary and secondary classes at Beverley DHS will develop and use its own Connect tool so that parents have information about the learning programs specific to each of their children, as well as having access to their child’s regular homework tasks and a range of educational resources.

We look forward to working with you to improve your connection with the school and your understanding of your child’s learning programs through Beverley DHS Parent Connect. Please contact the school if you have any difficulty accessing the community, or if you have not received information about your password. We will be happy to assist you either over the phone or by showing you how to navigate the site on one of the computers at school.

UpcomingEventsSwimming… We are presently organising a Swimming training program to commence in Week 4 of Term 4. We are extremely fortunate to have Mrs Jacinta Murray coaching our students as a part of our Physical Education program.

Boxercise…. Welcome back Lyn Kay!! Lyn is returning to Beverley DHS to challenge our High School students with Boxercise each week!! We are very excited to get this program back up and running and thank Lyn for the opportunity!

Year 5/6 Camp… The Year 5 and Year 6 classes are off on Camp next term in Week 2! Mrs Shaw and Mrs Thomas have been working hard to get the camp organised and we would like to thank them for their efforts and their willingness to leave their families behind so our students can have this opportunity to experience new things!

T 20 Cricket… T20 Cricket has been organised for November 3rd. Brookton will be hosting the competition this year and we will be taking our willing Year 5 and 6 students to participate. More details next term……

STRANGER DANGER INCIDENT

Parents should be aware that two students from Beverley were approached and followed by strangers in the main street area on the weekend. The incident was reported to police, who have advised the school of the incident. We would encourage you to talk to your children about strategies for how to stay safe, how to deal with a situation in which they are approached by strangers, and how important it is to tell someone straight away if this occurs. Parents are encouraged to report any incidents to Beverley police promptly.

Recently year 6 students have been given handouts on scoliosis and colour blindness. Please take the time to read these and follow up with your Doctor, Physiotherapists or Optometrist if you have any concerns. Parents/guardians of older students in Year 7, 8 and 9 are reminded about the importance of re-checking their child `s spine as children may show signs of scoliosis following a rapid growth spurt.

Colour blindness Colour blindness means that a person can not dis nguish some colours or see the colours differently to other people. Very few people who are colour blind are ‘blind’ to all colours. Commonly, the colours seen differently are greens, yellows, 0ranges and reds. For more informa on and see the Colour Blind Awareness and Support Group on h p://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~doverton/ If you have any concerns, colour vision tes ng can be performed by some general prac oners, eye specialists or optometrists.

Scoliosis Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examina on of the back. The normal spine has three curves – one in the neck, on in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis. An informa on leaflet about Scoliosis has been distributed to all year 6 students. Please read through the informa on provided and check your child for scoliosis as described in the leaflet. If you have any concerns, please contact your General Prac oner or local Physiotherapist. Helen Guinness. Community Health Nurse. 96410200

Mental Health Week encourages keeping

active and getting involved With Mental Health Week being celebrated these school holidays, we are reminded to simply do the things that we enjoy and to do them more often.

Mental Health advocates advise that if we keep active (physically and mentally), get involved in community life, and do things that give us a sense of meaning and purpose, we not only feel happier but we can cope better with problems and stress.

Act-Belong-Commit is the official theme for Mental Health Week, which runs from 2–10 October, coinciding with World Mental Health Day (10 October).

Act-Belong-Commit is based on research conducted by Curtin University into people's perceptions of mental health and the behaviours they believe protect and promote good mental health.

For more information visit www.actbelongcommit.org.au or phone Sarah Dixon, local Act-Belong-Commit Project Officer on 9690 1320. To get more involved in community life and find out about local clubs and groups, visit the Shire website.
